In “The Myth of the Latina Woman,” Judith Ortiz Cofer breaks down many of the stereotypes America has of Hispanic women. She cites several common incidents that have happened to her and many other Latinos because of the stereotypes people have of Hispanics. The author met a man who recited “Maria” from West Side Story and another time she walked into the ship’s restaurant to give her first poetry reading and was mistaken for a waitress by an older woman.

The way Latinos dress is based on tradition in their culture. There are many different colors everywhere in Puerto Rico, so the girls wore colorful clothes and showed a lot of skin because it’s hot. However, in America, people think that Latina girls were colorful clothes and showed a lot of skin because they are sluts or easy to get with. The author proves that this is not true after she goes to her first high school dance with a boy who tries to kiss her. She refused the kiss and he mentioned that Latin girls mature early. An author who has learned how to deal with these situations simply walks away.

I think most if not all stereotypes are simply incorrect and pointless. It is a prejudice to think that certain groups of people must dress, behave or do anything in a certain way. Everyone is free to act as they wish. If a group of Latino girls were raised to dress and act a certain way, that’s a cultural thing and shouldn’t be mocked. I strongly believe that we all have the right to do what we think is right and others should not interfere with that.
