Les Miserables, A Film Review
Being the main and most important is what we always want, to be the center of everything, but do we always have to be one of the main characters in everyone’s story? Did we ever think we were different? Or to be loved by people by being extraordinary, being who you really are, and doing the things you want? To be unique in your own special way? How I wish I were. I loved a guy who was also in love with another beautiful young lady. How I wish I were his. How I wish I was never alone again. How I wish I could be happy and spend the rest of my life with him. Oh, how I wish he could, but I can’t. Loving him seemed strange to me, he was using me to get to know the girl better and be closer to her, even though I was already begging for his precious love. How I wish he would do the same for me, but all I want to know is what’s in her and why can’t I be her? I am Eponine, an unhappy woman with a pure heart who symbolizes rain. Rain that causes people to have a hard time, pain and sometimes get stuck, but rain that is also the reason plants grow, the coolness of the air, an eco-friendly way to keep compost moist, and the reason people see rainbows. Because rain is not only something negative and not beneficial, rain is something that people should enjoy and thank God for every drop it drops. This is the story of a young beautiful girl who has always been unhappy and has never been the center of anyone else’s life. That despite her desperate life, she was the reason why the two lovers are intertwined. She made way for their love and sacrificed herself for the person she truly loves. She may not be the main character in the story called Les Miserables, but without her, everything will not be the same.
There was a beautiful woman whose life was so miserable and tragic. She became pregnant at an early age with someone who betrayed her and left her with great responsibilities that keep her daughter away from her. Although she was poor, she did everything to have money to search for her daughter. The woman’s name was Fantine, a brave woman who gave herself up to her death to find a way to find her daughter Cosette. Before she died, she asked Jean Valjean to find Cosette and raise her with the love she always wanted her to feel. As promised to his beloved, Jean Valjean sought out Cosette and did everything he could to retrieve her from the strangers who had adopted her. Years later, Cosette has grown into a beautiful young lady, raised and cared for by her father, Jean Valjean. Although they live with love, they hide from Inspector Javert and the authorities who were looking for her father who stole a loaf of bread once upon a time. Marius saw Cosette and the very first time they met they were already in love. Marius asked Eponine for help, he wanted her to look for the young lady he fell in love with and to know her name and where she lived. Marius kept persuading her to help him, not knowing that Eponine secretly admired him. Every time she tries to help Marius, she only feels desperate and miserably thinking that despite her feelings, she will be alone forever, she decides to help Marius search for Cosette until they meet again. Eponine was so upset but decided to scream and warn Cosette and her father that Inspector Javert was coming. The war started again, Cosette and her father ran away to hide from Inspector Javert and the authorities. Cosette left a letter expressing her love for Marius, unfortunately Eponine found the letter which upset her. She kept the letter until she decided to give it to Marius in the middle of a war against the French authorities that led to her death. Before dying in Marius’s arms, she expressed her secret love to him. Marius was saddened by the death of his friend, but felt happy when he read his letter from Cosette. As witnessed at an early age, Gavroche decided to fight for their dignity and rights. Many men died during the war, including the little boy Gavroche and Marius’s friend Enjolras, who before being shot raised a red flag to symbolize their pride in human dignity and rights. Inspector Javert was tormented by his conscience and was so sorry for what he had done, when he saw the bloodstains and the bodies of the people who had died, he decided to die by jumping into the river as well. Jean Valjean decided to give his daughter’s hand to Marius, who married Cosette. Before her father died, he gave her a letter that told her everything she needed to know and mentally answered all her questions. This is considered a realization for Cosette. She found out everything by researching and searching for answers to what really happened before. She answered her mind only when she was able to interpret and understand everything.
Criticism of formalism is a type of criticism that leads people to solutions that are answered by understanding and interpreting what actually happened. Les Miserables can be a form of critique of formalism due to its plot. No one told his story. Viewers will be able to recognize the film through the interpretation of the events and scenarios depicted in the film. It is a tricky kind of movie that the viewer will fully understand by analyzing every situation that happens in the story.
As one of the viewers who reviewed this film, the uniqueness of the setting appealed to her the most. The musical scenes and conversational melodies remove the dullness of the film which captured people’s interest in watching the film. Each character’s endeavor brings a different kind of appeal. Gavroche and Eponine are the most interesting, their emotions are stronger than the other characters, the emotions they conveyed came from their hearts, which can make the audience feel the same. The environment was realistic which made people believe that every scenario was true and real. The way people reacted to each scene made the film more intense and exciting. People were satisfied after watching the movie. Although Eponine was not the main character, she was able to prove to the audience that no one needs to be the main character in everyone’s life to be important. That everyone is important enough to live the life they want to live. That everyone is uniquely different, no one should change just to be appreciated by others, because every single person is God’s creation, and if we are not able to please people, then they are not worthy of us, because it is always people who respect us , but we seem to ignore them. We always think we are unhappy and desperate but we are loved, loved by our family who always love us no matter who we are. God who fixes people and loves us unconditionally no matter how broken we are.
