Pole Dancing – From Coach Potato to Pole Dancer
We all know that pole dancing is good for fitness, strength building Anything that makes it difficult for the couch like me to bp (before the pole), off the couch and doing something aerobic has got to have something in it. I started after I had my little girl in 1999. As the only exercise I enjoyed was dancing, I ran salsa, samba, African and other dance classes for several years. However, I knew that none of this would get rid of my pregnancy bingo wings. I researched martial arts classes, but I only wanted to throw with my limbs, not the rim or be inflicted with any kind of injury! I caught a glimpse of a pole dancer on TV doing an upside-down spin (unusual at the time, because for years after I started taking lessons, the only televised representation of the pole was standing at the pole, wiggling a bit.)
and I knew that was what I wanted to try. Searching the web, I found that there were pole classes everywhere in America, and I knew other women here would want to do it too, so I started a class. I’m 44 now and consider it the best job I’ve ever done. I have been teaching for over 8 years now.
If you can’t stick to the gym and regular forms of exercise, pole dancing is so much fun that you won’t notice how much energy you’re using or how many muscles you’re working. Strength builds quickly in the class and allows you to achieve moves you would never have dreamed of before you started. I noticed a difference in the tone of my arms after just four weekly sessions. Every other exercise machine I’ve had ended up being a tumble dryer, if you’re lucky enough to have a bar at home, as many people do these days, getting on it is fun, not a chore. 10 minutes a day will give you a significant workout and you will see a dramatic improvement in your tone and fitness.
The benefits are not just physical. With improved grace and posture, you appear more confident in front of others, making you feel more confident in your everyday life and your confidence shines through. I recommend one-on-one lessons to quickly progress and pick up moves, but I encourage ladies to come to group lessons because it’s good for your confidence to be told by others in class that your move looks good. After a while you have to start believing the compliments and that’s when a magical thing happens and a pole dancer appears. I generally hate photos of myself, but I always love my pole photos, they look very elegant and poised – that must reflect how you feel about yourself.
You’ll notice I didn’t mention the sexy side of pole dancing. The pole was used for martial arts training and circus performances centuries before lap dance clubs were invented. You don’t pay for pole dancing in lap clubs, only for private dances, i.e. stripping nearby. Many belly dancers are relatively poor pole dancers because they are paid for nudity, not pole skills. Dirty dancing is an option, not a requirement, and lap style pole is a style, not the only one. Pole dancing is beautiful and sensual just like other dance forms, trapeze and circus skills. Whatever your style, you can adapt it to the pole – I mean the salsa pole, and in the Zebraqueen clan I have jazz poles, roller poles, street poles, ballet poles and yoga poles. Men obviously think that pole dancing is just there to entertain them, and they fail to understand how empowering and beneficial it can be for a pole dancer who is confident in her pole skills, with or without an audience! Either way, it’s a great party piece to have up your sleeve. Use as you see fit!
As for nudity, you need bare, clean skin to grip, so some bare skin is essential, but you can dance fully clothed with the help of clingy leggings, (sticky pants) that I invented partly for ladies who don’t want to reveal themselves. legs, but also because they provide more grip for hands-free movements and eliminate burns!
Pole dancing is not just for the young, beautiful, thin, big breasted etc. We have all shapes and sizes in our classes. Although it may be more difficult to start if you are heavier, the fact is that you are lifting more weight than you are cutting, which will make you stronger and faster. When you start pole dancing, you’ll notice strength building first in your shoulders and arms (and legs, especially with spinning poles), then in your back, abs, and core muscles.
After a few sessions, you will be able to reverse the sitting and hanging back (head down movement). Now it gets interesting!
I was looking at the benefits of inversions because I thought they must have some advantage if they sell inversion tables for simple hanging upside down – and they are! Before I started pole dancing, I used to see an osteopath regularly with back pain, but not anymore! I thought it was because I’m fitter and stronger, but maybe it’s also because I regularly invert….
This is a list of benefits gained from inversion therapy websites:
- Reduce back pain
- Provide care and feeding of discs
- Achieve functional fitness
- Train basic muscle groups without straining the spine
- Recover from high impact workouts
- Reduce the pain of overworked muscles
- Strengthen ligaments
- Get rid of stress
- Stimulate circulation
- Train your balance and orientation
Helps you age gracefully!!!:) Hanging upside down improves blood flow to your face and brain – you’ll look younger and smarter!
All this while you do something fun!
If you want to pole dance, you can, regardless of your fitness level. Starting with easy movements, you will soon build your strength and confidence – try it, you might surprise yourself! I did.
