Saint Maria Goretti – Crimson Rose of Jesus

Little White and Crimson Rose of Jesus The name Maria Goretti has a special place for me. I guess most of my generation grew up hearing the story of the little crimson and white rose of Jesus, Saint Maria Goretti.

Her story arouses in us such emotions, such a desire to bring ourselves to Jesus and His Mother Mary as pure buds, ready to blossom into whatever vocation He desires for us, be they religious, lay people or as in the case of little Mary. , Saints who gave their lives as martyrs rather than defile their immortal souls by committing sin. And so saints like Maria Goretti become role models for young people in this modern age. We know the story of Maria Goretti with superficial knowledge.

She is famous for what she apparently did, she died rather than let her relationship with Jesus be ruined by giving in to sexual temptation. This is the obvious cause of her holiness, as well as the obvious consideration of St. Maximilian Kolbe’s claim to sainthood was that he took the place of a fellow prisoner in the death row at Auschwitz during the Second World War. But these are only apparent.

There is much more in every life that calls us to worship them as special servants of God, true role models. We wrote about St. Maximilian Kolb in two different books and tried to tell the story of this powerful man in the Church.

Saint Maria Goretti had two other virtues which are so subtle that they are lost in the shadow of the sacrifice of life. One of them was selflessness. She cared more about her eternal soul than her physical safety. And perhaps even more than that she cared more for the soul of her assailant than her own life.

As we get into the pitiful story of her life and death, we can’t help but realize that one of the reasons for her determination not to give in to Alessandro Serenelli was for his salvation.

Maria Goretti was a good girl, a clean girl. At the age of eleven, she had such a love affair with Jesus that she would rather die than allow her chastity to be compromised, die rather than risk breaking her relationship with Jesus. But how can that be? How could she understand what path her Yes to Jesus would take her down? We are not talking about St. Agnes or St. Cecilia or the saints of the early church who gave up their lives for Jesus.

This was the twentieth century. She was a product of that century. Where have we come, how have we fallen, that our young people cannot understand how a girl of their own century could sacrifice her life for her morals? Girls as young as eleven, are “sexually active”, become pregnant, often have abortions with the help of their own mothers, in many cases, and those who do not die on the abortionist’s table, in many cases die of AIDS.

We are in a time in our society where virtually no morality is taught or practiced either in our school classrooms, in our church pulpits, or in the homes of these children’s parents.

Our schools give condoms to children and parents put girls on birth control pills. We learn safe sex in an effort to avoid the spread of dangerous diseases and keep the world population down.

Last on the list of priorities is preventing the spread of the moral decay of civilization, which will ultimately be far more deadly than any physical disease our children contract. Maria Goretti is definitely a contradiction in terms. She is certainly a paradox. It could not have existed in the last decade of the twentieth century, at the end of the second millennium, and yet it is a product of our century.

Either it is completely out of sync, or we are condemned for the apathy we show our children through our behavior. Either Maria Goretti is wrong or we are. Is it possible that we could be wrong?

But we are already getting ahead of ourselves. To begin at the beginning of this short but great life in the Lord, we must go to the far north and east of Italy, to the Marches, the rugged region around Ancona and the Adriatic Sea. For those of us who visit the Holy Lodge in Loreto, it looks like a most pleasant place.

The month we usually choose, July, is not yet hot. The warm breeze from the Adriatic makes it the most desirable time to visit Our Lady of the Holy Hut. But it’s July in Loreto. Not too far away in Corinaldo, where our little saint was born, things are not quite the same.

Winters are cruel. The howling winds coming off the Adriatic Sea hit the ground as hard as rocks, making it almost impossible to do any work on the farms. If that’s not enough, the spring and fall bring heavy rain and flooding that destroys any small amount of crops that might be planted. No matter how hard the farmers tried, it was not a good place to live. It was home for the parents of Maria Goretti, Luigi Goretti and Assunta Carlini. They lived here all their lives, just like their parents before them and their parents before them. But that didn’t make their lives any more bearable. It was just consistent.

And here, on October 16, 1890, our little saint was born. She was the second living child of the Goretti family, the first boy to die as an infant. She had an older brother, Angelo, and would have more brothers and sisters as time went on. When we wrote about the Little Flower of Lisieux, St. Teresa, we said that Saints beget Saints. In particular, Mary’s mother, Assunta, was a holy woman. She had no formal education but was powerfully taught by her Church and we believe she was given infused knowledge by the Holy Spirit.

This love for God and her church was passed on to her children, especially little Mary. She was baptized the day after her birth. Assunta did not want her child to carry the stain of original sin any longer than necessary. Under the tutelage of Assunta and Luigi, Maria grew up to be a very self-sacrificing, self-sacrificing girl. More than her own comfort, she cared about being liked by others. Small things meant a lot to Maria.

Perhaps because the family has always been and always will be very poor financially, they were not in dire need of property. They were not available to the family; Maria didn’t think about them. Instead, she tried to do everything she could to make her family’s life better. She was a very normal girl who enjoyed playing and running around the fields. But her mother noticed a strong spirituality in her from an early age. It never left her; it was just more intense. Little Maria and her family lived a happy life in Corinaldo, but they were always on edge. The land was too small and farmable. Luigi did his best, but it wasn’t good enough. He insisted that he could not properly care for his family under these conditions. He argued that they would have a better chance in some remote country, perhaps in a large city, Rome. The grass was always greener somewhere else. Besides, everything was better than them.

Assunta, on the other hand, was determined not to leave the place of her birth and the places of her children, especially for a decadent place like Rome. But Luigi decided to give his family a better life. To make his case stronger, their close friends and neighbors Domenico and his sister Teresa Cimarelli were also planning to leave. This gave Luigi the courage to convince Assunta that they and their children should leave Corinaldo and head towards Rome.

The allure of the big city has always drawn people from the farms. But for those who left, it didn’t help in most cases. Even when there was work, very often there was no life. Wages were just above slave labor; living conditions were impossible; the whole family had to work in different factories. The work of St. Don Bosco in the slums of Turin in the last fifty years of the nineteenth century was proof positive that in the great cities there were no streets lined with gold, only grief and very often the breakdown of families.
