Cats And Cat Trees For the Elderly

As a young girl, I participated in the Girl Scouts of America. The mother of one of my friends was the commander of our troop and she had a soft spot for older people. Our monthly civic hours (required to maintain our badge) were often spent reading stories to those in care homes and visiting others in need who chose to remain in their homes. Sometimes we took special treats for them to enjoy and often talked about our extracurricular activities because they seemed really interested in learning about our lives.

I was particularly close to a kind lady named Miss Sheila. Sheila was an animal lover and often told me stories about her cat who had died then. After hearing many stories about Miss Sheila’s cat, I requested permission to bring my own kitty and her cat trees (small ones, of course) to visit Miss Sheila and her friends at home during one of our trips.

Miss Sheila was thrilled and delighted to watch my cat’s antics on the cat trees. I put them close together near Sheila’s chair so she could see Freddy (my cat) jump from his perch on one of the cat trees to the swing of the other. With a rope ladder and a swinging mouse there were plenty of toys for Freddy which meant Sheila was thoroughly entertained.

From then on, I made a habit of bringing Freddy and at least one of the cat trees once a month when we visited the nursing home. It’s true what they say about how animals can really brighten a person’s outlook and bring him such joy that enriches his life. It was evident from the look on Miss Sheila’s face every time she saw Freddy.
