An Odor of Revenge ((1874, Ozark, Alabama) (The Life of Austin Hood))

First part

Fragrance (background):

The year is now 1874; Sergeant Austin Hood escaped from entering Andersonville Prison in 1864 when Captain Rosenbaum sent him there to be hanged. Emma Hightower is now in her late thirties and Scip Josh Mason is four years old, Emma has seen him playing in her yard in Shantytown, three miles from Ozark, Alabama and fourteen miles from Hightower Plantation, off and on for those four years. Lulu Mason is doing well, picking up a few dollars here and there for odd jobs, mostly seamstresses. A ghost, he still lives at Hightower Plantation, his son occasionally visits him in the woods behind his cabin. Ten years had passed since Austin Hood, old Sergeant Hood, had seen Rosenbaum; he is now 48 years old. He thought little and until now about killing Sarah Franklin, the woman he killed in 1864 who dressed up as a Union soldier and used her for practice fire, and then turned around and killed the corporal. Dennis Smiley of Smiley Plantation and Private Richmond.

So the question arises, what has he been doing all these last years, these last ten years? He lived for a time on the ‘Father of Waters,’ the mighty Mississippi River, near Memphis, in a houseboat, and then near Nashville, which is on the Cumberland River. Not a long stay, in Memphis he was in the only poor people’s hospital in town that cared for ship crews and transients – most people said it was for some mild venereal disease called ‘Clap’.

To most people, this new period of reconstruction seems to have brought excitement, novelty, prosperity with its manufactured goods, but it remains a hostile environment for Hood, who runs a small prostitution ring with three girls from his houseboat. Or he did recently.

Maybe I can explain this prostitution thing a little better: the term used back then was “Women of the City”, a term that excluded respectable women such as housewives, in this case especially those from the city of Memphis and its immediate vicinity. . Besides, he kept them as mistresses, so that in this case again there was no need for a city medical inspector, nor for medical certificates, which cost $2.50 and another $10.00 to register at the mayor’s office; even though the money goes to the New City Hospital, it still hasn’t changed anything for Hood for prostitution, a dollar earned is a dollar earned to him. Often, when he came to town, several women came to work for him for extra money, who were housekeepers, not wives, as he had three: Ewa, Agnieszka, and Miss Krysis (Miss Krysis was his favorite; all under thirty when they came to Mr. Hood, now in their mid-thirties, all immigrants from Poland).

And so here are the things, for now or were, in a moment they will change:

Part two

Revenge (present):

It could be said that old victories often turn into tragic if not defeated future moments in life if the sound is not really recognized on the spot, like a broken wheel hub or in this case the hanging of a sergeant. Hood, when Captain Rosenboum had the opportunity, in 1864, about ten years ago, if this new event had not occurred.

The will for revenge often outweighs compassion in the heart, in other words, compassion can too often be very expensive. Sergeant Hood never forgot or put aside the idea that he might have sympathy with the old captain who had condemned him; and here was a man who himself received a dishonorable discharge, on April 7, 1865, two days before the end of the Civil War. You can get over it, for “Misconduct…” and he hasn’t run from the law in ten years. Hood felt something was wrong, just more fuel to the fire, more hatred for the captain.

Now he stood on the Stone Bridge, just outside Shantytown, the very setting of the stage ten years ago when he shot Franklin, a long wait and a return to Alabama, but he said it was worth it.

It was a hopeless test in which Hood was running against a common enemy, his country, it was his battlefield, the whole country, so he thought, ‘What can you expect?’ as if the captain’s doom was sealed that day, he ordered him to Andersonville.

It was the morning of April 9, 1874, 9:30 a.m. Hood stood motionless on the bridge and watched the quails and pheasants and birds and squirrels emerge in the sunlight as if on vacation, leaning a little over the new railing put someone into the side stone walls of the bridge, but he held fast, it was a picture of the Negress’s face looking at him, back at him, it was Sarah Franklin, where she was buried, ‘Funny’ he thought, ‘One incident, and that brought him a whole armful of trouble up to his elbows , God forbid.”

He crouched down a bit, looking more like he was staring into the forest with that look of ultimate triumph. He didn’t even know the words, he just felt the emotions. He had traveled far for the moment, but ‘far’ didn’t matter.

The wild dull sun on his cast iron skull made him imagine Captain Morse Rosenbaum.

“Nothing!” he said, “I will be stopped from now on.” Then he hesitated. “Do you think he’ll be at Hightower Plantation where his father still lives?” He hesitated again, just talking to himself, clapping his hands, they were full of dust from the road, “Aha!” he shouted.

“No one knows he’s got black blood, he won’t be in the slums or Hightower’s, he’ll be in the Ozarks and he’ll play it like a big white man, the ultimate loser, maybe he’ll have a wife-“

11:30 a.m., April 9, 1874:

They faced one anther at close range, two arms’ lengths to be exact, both in a kind of furious stretch, jerking their bodies as dust flew into their faces, and Hood shouted, “I’ve come to kill you, you negro bastard!”

“Then kill!” Morse told him. And his voice seemed to come down on Hood like a hammer, a huge hammer, knocking him to his knees to the very dust of the ground, wind and dust covering their eyes, still in the act of confrontation, neither of them freezing.

“I curse you Hood,” said the voice of an old man standing in the background, it was Ghost, Morse’s father, and he seemed to know what was going to happen in the blink of an eye.

Rising from his feet, Hood shot the Confederate captain in the stomach, then in the midst of his frozen immobility he ran across the town, past the backs of the houses, stopping along the way to look down. street as if the old man might be following him. He grabbed the horse that was saddled, slipped his foot into the stirrup, and the horse started to run, galloping as if in wild terror, plowing right into the dirt bank, throwing Hood upside down like a rag doll, landing in the mud, breaking his femur and neck.

As a result, Old Hood lived to a ripe old age, dying in 1922, begging on the streets of Ozark – decrepit, alcoholic.
