High School Series We Love on Satellite TV

Maybe because of nostalgia for the “good old days” of Friday sports games and school dances in the cafeteria, or maybe because high school just looks better on the small screen, viewers are constantly drawn to high school dramas. Whether it’s the main characters or the hallways of their schools, there seems to be something endlessly interesting about this part of our teenage lives.

From the dark scenes of My So Called Life, which contain all the angst and variety of a normal average American high school, to the brightly shot scenes of Bayside High on Saved By The Bell, a number of shows have captured versions (real or imagined) of what high school is like In the United States.

My So Called Life only ran for one season (19 episodes), but was critically acclaimed and loved by viewers who caught it. Darker than similar shows, it starred Claire Danes, who later rose to fame in films such as Little Women and Romeo and Juliet. The show was a break from the glitzy world featured in Saved By The Bell and actually featured one of the first openly gay teens on mainstream television. The fashion was painfully true to real life, awkward styles and all. Maybe it was too real for comfort, or it just had a tough time slot, but the show was canceled after one year. Still, in 2007, the HD DVD boxset saw wide acceptance. Although the show aired over 10 years ago, its DVD is currently ranked among the top 20 teen TV box sets sold on a number of popular online marketplaces.

Filmed in high definition, Gossip Girl is the latest in a long line of high school dramas. This one, however, traded middle America for the heights of New York’s Upper East Side. The stars are impeccably dressed and incredibly snappy, a far cry from the awkwardness of most 11th graders. Yet, and perhaps because of these unrealities, viewers return week after week to see what shenanigans Blaire is up to and who Chuck is terrorizing. With lives as shiny as the HD screens that fill their personal limousines, the cast of Gossip Girl live in a world of private schools, decadent parties, love affairs, martinis and the occasional moment of parental tenderness. With beautiful aerial shots of Manhattan and Brooklyn, New York City also plays an important role in this high school series we love to watch.

With so many shows featuring halls and high school tribulations, it’s hard to know how to watch all the episodes that have aired since this week and reruns of shows from years ago.
