A Vision of the Inhuman Character of Human Life

Wuthering Heights is such a terrifying and powerful novel that its final impression is one of tragedy. The coordinated operation of setting, characters and events unleashes an intensity that is undeniably tragic.

The novel has a bleak moorland setting; the very title of the novel suggests it. The scene is held by mist and cloud, frost, rain and storm, and gaunt thorns. The Yorkshire moors are naturally rugged, bleak and windswept, but their valleys can be beautiful in summer. But it is their wildness that prevails in the book. And long stretches of solitude emphasize the sense of mystery.

Heathcliff represents the basic elemental energies of nature, including human nature. But in him we see energy only in its destructive, demonic aspects. There is a tension between two kinds of reality – the raw inhuman reality of natural energies and the restrictive reality of civilized ways, customs and codes.

The first kind of reality manifests itself in the violent characters of Heathcliff and Catherine, children of the rock, the moor and the storm, who disrupt everyone around them with a monstrous desire for an inhuman kind of passion, and eventually crumble from within with their very energies. They represent a vision of the inhuman in terms of human character.

Heathcliff, a gypsy-looking bugger, was dark as a child, almost as if he had “come from the devil”. His eyes were like the “clouded windows of hell” from which “the devil” looked out. Catherine describes him as a “wild, ruthless, wolf-man”. Catherine is also a “carefree, wild tomboy” as a girl. She has furious tantrums, lies, bites and her toy of choice is a whip. Catherine and Heathcliff’s hungry love belongs in the realm of imagination. Catherine says that while her love for Edgar is like the leaves that change with the seasons, her love for Heathcliff resembles the eternal rocks beneath.

No wonder Catherine’s marriage to Edgar condemns Heathcliff to be “infernal in heart and misery.” And her marriage will also doom her because she is of the same demonic nature as Heathcliff. Civilized marriage and domesticity are antithetical to the demonic quality. The excess of this passion is translated into Heathcliff’s thirst for revenge and selfish wickedness after her death.

There is also something inhuman about the atrocities committed by the other residents of Wuthering Heights. Hindley puts a knife between Ellen Dean’s teeth and also throws her baby Hareton over the stairs. As a child, Hareton hangs a litter of puppies on the back of a chair. As a child, Linton derives sadistic pleasure from torturing cats.

But against the horrors of the inhuman reality is the normal human reality found in Ellen Dean, the old family housekeeper, and Lockwood, the urban country visitor. This human reality is also given in the romance of Cathy and Hareton in the atmosphere of book learning, gentle behavior and domestic charities. They live in the Grange because they do not belong in the world of exposed unbridled passion represented by Wuthering Heights.

The tension between the two kings of reality – one wild and the other gentle – never seems to reach harmony. They exist but remain separate and irreconcilable.

Wuthering Heights does not seem to teach any moral lesson. Perhaps at the deepest level, what Emily Bronte would like to express must be understood in Catherine’s feelings: not only that their lives are inseparable, but that she is one with Heathcliff. On this level, Heathcliff does not function as an independent being at all. It has the deepest instinctive life. So by betraying him in her marriage to Edgar, she casts off the part of herself on which her fulfillment depends. Ultimately, her thwarted passions cause her death within a year of her wedding.

Heathcliff also loved Catherine, who had been his life and soul since their childhood. His agony at her death is terrifying. His outlook is entirely unchristian, and when death approaches he desires no heaven but to be reunited with it.

Despite the happy ending of love and the promise of marriage between young Cathy and Hareton, the novel fails to dispel the heavy and burdensome atmosphere, which gives the story a distinctly tragic character with its intensity and power.
