Top Ten Bar Movies
Given that many of us spend a great deal of time in bars, it’s amazing how few movies feature bars as a central element of the story. There are classic bar scenes (such as the Star Wars Cantina or the High Noon Saloon), but few films feature the bar as a separate character. Stripes are usually a drawing device thrown in as shorthand. Depressed or lonely? Then a seedy seedy bar on the wrong side of town reflects the character’s inner angst. Happy? A hip martini bar with neon and bright colors is front and center. Mysterious, tired or nervous? Afterwards, the characters sit in the hotel bar drinking scotch.
Despite all the evidence and places for solid research, few films really capture the atmosphere of a real bar. Bartenders rarely respond to “hey barkeep” and “pass the whiskey” is usually met with a blank stare. Capturing the essence, smells, sounds and feel of a real drinking hole is apparently difficult. Here are ten movies set in a bar. Not necessarily realistic, but interesting nonetheless.
10. Coyote Ugly. (2000) A ridiculous bar movie that follows a young girl who tries to make it in New York as a songwriter, but ends up working at an all-girl bar called the Coyote Ugly. This movie featured lots of bar dancing and scantily clad women throwing bottles. The bar was modeled after the infamous watering hole in Greenwich Village and spawned a string of cat-impersonation bars across America.
9. Road House. (1989) Either the best throwback movie of all time, or one of the worst duds ever made. But you can’t resist Patrick Swayze, who has hung up his dancing shoes to play a tai chi bouncer. Swayze plays our heroic hero, who is given the impossible task of alleviating the violence at the Double Deuce, a rowdy hony bar. He must also learn the secret ways of a bouncer guru and then take on the baddest man in Jasper, Wyoming – Ben Gazarro.
8. Cocktail. (1988) The “flair bartending” trend reached its apex or peak depending on your point of view with this 1988 film. A young Tom Cruise is a hot young bartender who is shown the ropes by an older, wiser Brian Brown. They become partners, then break up over a woman and become rivals. Rivals in throwing bottles in the air and shaking girls’ drinks. Imagine John Wayne ordering a drink from these guys.
7. Robin and the Seven Hoods. (1964) Ocean’s Eleven is the Rat Pack’s most famous film, and arguably its worst. Much better is this stylish retelling of the Robin Hood legend. This film was mostly set in the Prohibition Chicago talkeasies where the hard drinking, gurgling, partying band of Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr. and pitted Bing Crosby against the evil sheriff and Guy Gisborne (Peter Falk). The band sign autographs, trade zingers, and spend most of their time downing whatever they can cook up.
6. Swingers. (1996) Technically, this movie doesn’t take place in one bar, but his grand drinking tour of Los Angeles and Las Vegas is money, baby. This movie launched the careers of Jon Favreau and Vince Vaughn and made swing bars and tiki lamp cocktail bars trendy again.
5. 54. (1998) Studio 54 was the most famous nightclub of the late 1970s in New York. It was a typical disco and it was a party place for the famous and would-be-famous. Mike Myers steals the show as gay club owner Steve Rubell, while Ryan Phillipe, Salma Hayek and Neve Campbell play the beautiful people who make the nightclub their home. It perfectly captures the disco era and the exuberance of the 70s nightclub.
5. BarFly. (1987) On one level depressing, on another a brilliant expression of the joy of life. Mickey Rourke plays Henry Chinaski, a poet and alcoholic (loosely based on the real-life poet Charles Bukowski). He spends his life in LA bars drinking every night. One day he meets and falls in love with Wanda (played by Faye Dunaway). She is also an alcoholic but sees the real Charles. She helps him publish his poems and becomes famous for a short time. But in the end, they’re both happier as anonymous barflies.
3. Trees Lounge. (1996) Indie star Steve Buscemi directed this little picture, imagining what would have happened to him if he had stayed in his small hometown on Long Island and not moved to Manhattan to pursue acting. His film revolves around and perfectly captures a neighborhood bar full of colorful eccentrics who can’t seem to move on. Also starring Anthony LePaglia, Samuel L. Jackson, and Chloe Sevingny, Buscemi plays Tommy Basilio, a drunk who wanders through life desperate for some meaning behind the bar that is his only home.
2. Lost in translation. (2003) Sofia Coppola’s cinematic gem takes place mostly in a hotel bar in Tokyo. Disillusioned, jaded and bored actor Bill Murray meets neglected newlywed Scarlett Johansson and they form an unlikely bond as they try to discover or rediscover themselves in a strange and confusing land. They end up in a Japanese night club, which is a great counterpoint to the austere bar. Even though they don’t form a traditional romantic bond, they find something that turns each other on.
1. Casablanca. (1942) Possibly the perfect film. Bogart and Bergman September is this classic romantic drama. Casablanca, originally titled “Everybody Comes to Rick’s,” regularly tops best-of lists. It’s World War II and Rick Blaine, an exiled American and former freedom fighter, runs Casablanca’s most popular bar. It is full of thieves, spies, Nazis, guerrillas, refugees and piano players. The Nazis and their puppet Captain Renault are after underground leader Victor Laszlo, who is supposed to be somewhere in Casablanca. Lazslo secretly arrives at Ricks, but not alone. With him is Ilsa, Rick’s former love and heartbreaker. “Of all the bars in the whole world, he’ll fit in mine. The rest is movie magic.
