This is shocking because books would normally be first on the list and I thoughtlessly didn’t even include them! I have always been primarily a bookworm. They were my friends (sometimes my only friends!), my mentors and guides. In high school I was the beautiful but smart and unapproachable girl. I was in heaven at university and continued to collect books over the years until my house looked like a library. In my first Boulder house, I had custom oak bookshelves built that ran floor to ceiling across the long wall of the living room, with beautiful books!

Then came an unexpected divorce that left me with two young daughters (2 and 6) and, unbeknownst to me, a long, slow journey away from the written word. Struggling to make ends meet as a single parent for years, I sold off my prized book collection piecemeal to put food on the table, leaving me with perhaps 80 volumes that have enormous nostalgic value to me. a pivotal spiritual message when I needed it most. Recently, I’ve been in survival mode again and regretfully deleted the last of my salable treasures. The universe was protecting me…no one would buy it.

One such treasure is Leonard Shlain’s “Alphabet Versus Goddesses.” It theorizes that the written word has fundamentally reconfigured the human brain toward an excessive left-brain orientation that has left the conceptual parts of our brain atrophied.

Reading this book was a confirmation of some inner awareness that I have been working with for years. I tried to retrain my mind towards a more holistic and multi-dimensional approach. When I was 34 years old, I threw away my watch for good, began to develop my clairvoyant sense, which had always been strong for me, and immersed myself in the world of symbols. The astrological mandala spiraled out with deeper levels of meaning that I explored through sacred geometry, imagery and visions. I feel that the paradigm shift is coming not just for me, but for all of us as we muster the courage to release all censorious and conditional restrictions.
