Figs and Fags – Wasps and Dikes
The word gay can refer to homosexual men or it can refer to all homosexuals. I prefer the latter because LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transsexual Community) sounds like a new kind of drug. It also doesn’t roll off the tongue like the word “gayyy“. Without stepping on anyone’s toes, and I’m sure all my lesbian friends agree with me on this, I don’t like the word lesbian, it just doesn’t sound right. To me, a lesbian is like a bum and a dyke.” ;is fine to use the words, but mildly offensive in the mouth of a homophobic person. I just don’t like these expressions, but I know that’s just me.
I realize that some of the girls might think that gay is a term like “man”, you know something like: “the man survived the second world war”, as if a woman is included when you talk about a man. But in my mind Gay just refers to that secret thing we all share. that “cheerful” behind seeing someone in the bank that you saw last night at the club and she knows that you know that she knows exactly what you do. Such fun, being gay and hence the word gay, playfulness, secretive and joyful fits the profile of the whole LGBT commonwealth.
There are some similarities, but we’re also total opposites, right? An old saying comes to mind:
Drag is when a man wears everything a lesbian doesn’t.
So similar in theory and yet total opposites in likes, dislikes and temperament. So what is the relationship between us all? Is it the pursuit, the sameness of love for one’s own sex, or do we share the inner?gayness“that I mentioned earlier?
Maybe it’s like a Ficus and a Ficus wasp, or more generally, a fig and a fig wasp. The fig tree is the biggest enemy of fig trees because it is a parasite and if there are too many of them, your fig tree will only give you fruit that has gone bad. The fig tree is also a fig tree’s best friend because it helps with pollination. There are many types of fig trees and not all of them need pollination by fig wasps or even pollination at all, but most of them need a fig wasp to promulgate. So there you have it, an unnatural alliance between fig tree and fig tree.
To make things more interesting, the fig wasp is also the insect that can spread the farthest of all. Nor is she interested in the other trees only in the fig tree; hence the name. Fig wasps are not all created equal. You get two groups, those that pollinate and those that don’t; parasites and those that help the fig tree spread. The female wasp crawls into the young fruits, loses her wings on the way to the center, and then lays her eggs and dies. When the eggs hatch, the male mates with the female larvae. The male has no wings and therefore cannot survive long after leaving the brood. They mate and then crawl away, making way for the female without losing her wings. It then flies to another tree, climbs in, loses its wings and starts the whole process over.
Boys never get wings and never see the world. Girls have the advantage of seeing more of the world, but also not for long.
My comparison is not between a wasp guy and a girl, but between a wasp and a fig tree. Without the fig the wasp cannot survive because it only uses the fig tree and nothing else. On the other hand, a fig tree will not be able to spread without a wasp, and although some figs do not need a wasp, most do. The symbiosis of life, they need each other even if they are not alike, they need each other even if they are enemies (seen from a certain perspective), they need each other and no one else will fulfill their need.
For many, many species, it is vital for the fig tree to survive. It is one of the first fruits to be cultivated for agriculture, many birds find their source of calcium only from figs, there are more fig trees than most other species. The fig tree is undoubtedly essential to life on earth, and the fig tree is essential to the life of the fig tree.
Chances are you’ve never seen a fig wasp because it spends most of its life cycle inside a fig, yet this little insect is vital to life on Earth and has been vital for the past 80 million years. Try it on for size. The little wasp that wouldn’t even get our attention for a second is vital on Earth and has been since long before human beings walked this earth. In His mighty wisdom, the Creator created this little insect for a reason so great that you and I cannot even fathom its meaning.
Back to the dykes and rioters; if the Creator had a very good reason for making fig wasps, don’t you think he had an equally good reason for making us? Even if the lily is pink and the dam is brown, we need each other, don’t we? There is a relationship important enough to make our survival work together. Even if we don’t like the same things, we don’t look the same, we don’t act the same, we have many things in common.
The first is that we succumb to our own gender and that makes us outcasts; not very important to the rest of humanity. Second, we fight the same battle to stand out from the average and be rejected for it. Third, we cannot have children in a “normal” way, and that makes us irrelevant to the survival of humanity, from a heterosexual perspective. For most of humanity, we are abnormal, against nature, disgusting, unacceptable and meaningless in the scheme of things. We share hatred, rejection, persecution and discrimination. We may not be sexually interested in each other, but we are family, brothers and sisters. As a family we don’t always see eye to eye, but blood is thicker than water, God knows we’ll stick together. Finally, and perhaps the one that truly binds us together, even if we doubt it ourselves, the Creator in His wisdom has for some reason made us vital to the survival of life on Earth. I know because that’s why he did everything.
