Eternal Torment In Hell: Is It Biblical?
Is eternal torment in hell the final lot of lost sinners? I have already listed numerous Bible texts that contradict this teaching in my article entitled: “Is Hell Eternal?” And at the end of this article, I will provide a “link” that presents literally dozens of texts that prove beyond doubt that this doctrine of eternal torment is contrary to the overwhelming weight of biblical evidence.
We begin with a few scriptures that clearly teach the destruction and death of the wicked, rather than their eternal torment. In Psalm 145:20 God says that he preserves all who love him, but that he will destroy evil. The Hebrew word used for destruction in this text is “shamad”. this word shamadit is also used in Psalm 37:37-38, where God declares that there is a wonderful “future” for the honest and good, but also says that the wicked will destroyed (“shamad”) and will have no future. According to “Strong’s Expanded exhaustive Concordance“, shamad means to be completely destroyed, to perish, or destroy. He further emphasizes that shamad always expresses complete destruction or destruction. Therefore, the exact rendering of these two passages in Psalm 145:20 and Psalm 37:37-38 declares that honest and good people who love God will be preserved and have a great future, while the wicked will completely destroyed and destroyedand will have no future! They do No live forever in torment. They are destroyed, destroyed and gone! As Psalm 37:20 also states, “they are no more.” Given how the Bible uses the Hebrew word shamad describe destruction of the ungodly, that is interesting and even funny eternal torment preachers often refer to people like me who do not accept their dogma of eternal torment as “annihilationists”. Why are we labeled as such? Because we claim that God does not torture people forever, but that he does destroy is in hellfire, based on the overwhelming amount of biblical evidence that supports our position. After all, we have just seen that this is exactly what God teaches us in the Bible. That’s why I have “good company” in my faith, because God himself is too an annihilationist.
Proponents of the doctrine of eternal torment ask why God would cast sinners into eternal fire if they will not suffer in it forever; moreover, they question why the Bible repeatedly refers to hellfire as eternal or everlasting, when sinners experience only a limited period of suffering in it.
To begin with, this frequent emphasis on the fact that the fire of hell never goes out gives a clear and strong message to sinners that they are doomed in this fire. “This fire won’t go out, so they won’t make it out alive. However, undoubtedly the main reason why the Bible repeatedly refers to hellfire as eternal is that It is accurate description of the fire. It’s an eternal fire! God accurately describes the duration of hellfire. Do the proponents of eternal torment want God to describe them in other, deceptive language? It is certainly not God’s fault that theologians took the duration of hellfire and then applied that duration to everything that is thrown into the fire.
Just because things are thrown into a particular fire does not mean that the objects themselves will burn for the duration of that fire. If you’ve told your friends to come over to your house and enjoy an all-day campfire in your backyard roasting hot dogs and marshmallows on a fall day, that means everything you throw into your fire will burn all day just because Are you building a fire all day? Definitely not! During the day, you’ll probably throw in some small twigs and branches that are consumed within minutes. You can also throw in some paper or plastic plates and cups from food that will literally be used up in seconds. And there will undoubtedly be logs in your fire that will burn for hours before being completely consumed and gone. You told your friends the truth when you said it would be an all-day fire, but that didn’t mean that everything put into the fire would burn all day! Different items put into your all-day fire actually burned for different amounts of time before eventually being consumed and disappearing. How long each item burned was determined Ingredients each item. God creates eternal fire, but that does not mean that everyone who puts into that fire will burn forever. As with my all-day fire example, the amount of time they spend in the fire before they completely burn and disappear will be determined by their “sinful composition”. The more sin that is present, the longer they will burn.
This brings us back to another question raised by eternal torment advocates. As I mentioned before, they ask why God would throw sinners into the same eternal fire that he uses for the devil if they are not going to suffer eternally in it as well. I have a very logical answer to their logical question. How many hellfires would God have to light to handle the various durations of punishment? It should have a one-day fire for some; a weekly fire for others with greater guilt; moonfire for those with even greater sin; the annual fire for those who had an abundance of sin; a ten-year fire for those who committed heinous sins on many people; and a seventy-year fire for those who are alone in the classroom and spend most of their lives murdering and torturing, like Hitler and Stalin? I think God’s plan is much better. He uses the same fire to deal with all punishments of varying lengths. And it makes it eternal because it is being prepared for the devil and his angels (Matthew 25:41), who are eternal beings, as explained in the following paragraph; moreover, so that she can “justly” torment them for all eternity, because they were the ones who caused sin on this planet and who are responsible for billions of people losing their chance to have eternal life in heaven. Therefore the fire must be eternal; one “logical fire” to handle all punishment durations.
In the previous paragraph I stated that the devil and his angels are “eternal beings”. I say this based on Jesus’ statement in Luke 20:36 where he said that after the resurrection we he won’t die because we will equal to the angels. In other words, angels are “eternal beings”; they don’t die. And as already mentioned, therefore the fire prepared for them had to be eternal.
We know that the God of Christianity is a just and righteous God. With that in mind, I ask you to “calculate” hell. If the duration of hell were limited to one trillion years based on the seventy-five year average life expectancy, our fair and just God would punish people for 30,000 years for every moment they lived on earth. And remember, this is not a light and easy punishment; it is an agonizing torment in the flames of hell that causes wailing and gnashing of teeth. Moreover, this punishment of 30,000 years per minute is based on the one trillion year duration of hell. However, the teachers of this doctrine say that the torment of lost sinners in hell is not limited to one trillion years, but will continue for trillions of trillions of years of eternity. Therefore, torment eventually becomes millions and billions of years for every moment lived on earth.
Romans 2:4 says that it is God’s “goodness” which leads people to repentance. The average person, not previously indoctrinated with the Christian teaching of eternal torment, would consider this a revelation of God goodness and fair justice that He would punish “every minute” of disobedience millions of years painful torment and agony? I ask you to honestly ask yourself the following questions and try to answer them from an unbiased point of view.
If you have heard of some parents who locked their children in a hot dark room for six months every time they were disobedient; further, that once a day during the whole six months of their punishment they placed their children’s hands on a red-hot stove; could anyone convince you that the punishment was justifiable because the parents said that rebellion and disobedience were so offensive and repulsive in their eyes, which is the reason eternal torment advocates give to justify the eternal torture of the lost? You would completely reject a condemn such considerations and you know it! Yet Christian preachers represent a Heavenly parent (God) who is said to punish billions months for every act of disobedience; plus this Heavenly parent he doesn’t just burn his hands once a day, he burns his whole body continuously, every second of every minute of every hour of every day for billions of years of eternity! Is it logical and consistent to declare the behavior of the parents in my illustration to be unjust, unloving, and sadistic, but also to declare that the behavior of God, whose punishment is billions of times more severe and painful, is somehow just and loving? ? Such a claim defies reason, logic and any sense of fair justice.
If your child, spouse, or sibling was caught stealing a few DVDs, then brought before a judge who gave your loved one the same life sentence he gave the brutal killers; would you accept the judge’s argument that all violations of the law deserve the same punishment because they all reflect the same selfish and disobedient spirit, an argument used by eternal tormentors to justify their “one size fits all” eternal punishment of the lost? You know that you would absolutely and vehemently reject and oppose this irrational argument, and that you would find such judicial rulings and pronouncements ridiculous; moreover, you would condemn the judge’s sentence as grossly unfair. Yet Christian preachers represent a Heavenly Judge (God) who gives your lost loved ones the same sentence of eternal torment in hell that he gives to genocidal maniacs like Hitler and Stalin. Wailing and gnashing of teeth for billions of years of eternity will be the fate of your lost child, sibling or spouse, just as it will be for these mass murderers and even for the devil himselfaccording to proponents of eternal torment.
The preachers of eternal torment tell us that your lost loved one deserves the same eternal punishment in the flames of hell because God views all sin the same way. This is not only ridiculous, it is also contrary to the Bible. God does No to view all sins as the same. Jesus told Pilate that the sin of the religious leaders was larger than Pilate’s sin (John 19:11). Paul told the Corinthians that they had tolerated sexual sin in their church worse than the Gentiles would allow (1 Corinthians 5:1). And it is common knowledge to any good student of the Bible that there were many different punishments for the many different sins recorded in the Old Testament. Some sins carried the death penalty, but not all. Some sins were classified as abominations, but not all. The apostle John says that there are sins that are “No to death”and also says that there is a sin which “is to die for” (1 John 5:16-17). Anyone who claims that God views all sin the same way is either dishonest or seriously lacking in biblical knowledge.
The Bible says that God has no pleasure in the death of the wicked and that he asks them why they will die (Ezekiel 33:11). The kind of God who takes no pleasure in the death of the wicked does not punish them for billions of years of eternity as a supposed justice for a life of seventy-five years of disobedience. It is also significant that God asks them why they will “die” in this passage. He does not ask them why they will suffer torment forever. Throughout the Bible, the ultimate destiny of lost sinners is called “death,” not eternal life in pain and agony.
