I started selling tutus on Craigslist, eBay and word of mouth. The response was amazing and I was making almost $500 a month when I started. It may not seem like much, but as a stay-at-home mom, this extra cash helped usgreg get through the tough times. My husband was self-employed and worked from home, so the income he was making at the time was not stable. That extra couple of hundred dollars would cover groceries.

1: Measure and cut the elastic 2-3″ smaller than the size so the waistband fits snugly around the child’s waist. Overlap the elastic ends by at least 1/2-1″ and sew the two elastic ends together. This is the only time you will sew. If you can’t sew, use an elastic headband.

2: You will need between 1-3 rolls baby/toddler tutu. 4 years and up, start with 3-4 rolls. This calculation applies to tutus that are slightly above the knee. Adjust the roll count accordingly.

To cut the strips to length, at least two rolls can be placed evenly on top of each other on the cutting mat and the tulle unrolled. Place the edge of the tulle on the 0″ mark of the cutting mat and cut the tulle to the desired length using the rotary cutter. Place the quilter’s edge ruler where you want to make the cut and roll the rotary cutter using the cutter’s edge. The ruler as a guide can help prevent accidents.

The length of the tutu can be calculated by multiplying the required comb length by 2 and then adding an extra 2 inches to compensate for the knot to be tied. Example: Tutu length (12″) x 2 = 24 + 2 = 26. Cut each strip to 26″ long. Your measurements may vary.

3: Fold the tulle strip in half to resemble an inverted “U”. Tuck the folded end behind the elastic waistband. This will create a loop behind and above the top edge of the elastic.

4: You will notice two “tails” hanging from one of the folded strips. Pull both ends of the tulle strip through the loop you made and pull down to tighten. Do not pull it too tight, as this may stretch the rubber. It takes some practice to get it right.

5: Double knot tying is another way to attach tulle at the waist. Continue tying knots until you reach the other side. You can tie additional knots to fill any empty spaces. Aim to tie at least 4-5 knots per inch of your original waist measurement. So if you have a 20 inch waist, you should have 80-100 strips.

If the waistband stretches across, cut the elastic and re-sew to the original waist size.

Once you have completed the above steps, decorate your tutu.

Once you’ve perfected your technique, you can start thinking about selling your tutus. Look around online and make a list of tutu sellers and see what they charge. This will help you determine a fair price.

Start selling online or post photos of your tutus on your Facebook account. You will definitely get word of mouth advertising there. Advertising in local ballet schools could be one solution. Just make sure it’s not just a basic tutu. Take beautiful photos because no matter how beautiful the tutu is, no one will see it against a poorly lit and cluttered background.
