Mommas Don’t Let Your Babies Grow Up To Drive Tow Trucks

“I’ll only be 2 nights,” David reassured his new wife. This was the first time he had to leave his new family alone overnight. There was a good reason for that though, he tried to convince himself.

As he drove to the plane, she shouted another goodbye. “I hope you don’t have stage fright,” Maggie joked with him. “How many people will you be standing in front of again?” He ignored the comment.

“Now listen, I’ve called mom and if you and the twins need anything, just call her, okay?” He insisted. “I will, I will, don’t worry about me. If I were you, I’d be more worried about your presentation in front of all these people,” she giggled.

David had landed a new position at an engineering consulting firm and was traveling hundreds of miles away for a convention. To say he was worried about leaving his wife and kids behind was an understatement, but his mother lived close by and promised to help if anything happened.

Maggie got off the phone, still chuckling to herself as she worked on getting the twins dressed. “We’re going to have fun while daddy’s gone,” she told the 18-month-old girls, “let’s go shopping.”

Shopping with twin babies is always fun, but by the 3rd feeding and the 4th crying fit, Maggie was done. It was getting late anyway.

She packed up the mini van with shopping bags and babies and set off. The sun was in her eyes that hot summer night as she turned the corner on Route 8 back home.

She barely saw the blur when it happened. “How could such a small animal cause such a commotion?” she will remember later. As she rounded the corner, a mottled young brunette was standing, savoring a tasty spot on the road. At the last possible moment she saw it raise its head, which caused her to swerve into the other lane and back into hers and then down the embankment into the trees….

Karl’s day was coming to an end, he had been on duty since 6am and it was now almost 7.30pm. “Sometimes I’m treated like I’m part of the problem when I’m actually there to solve problem,” he noted. It was a sign to his boss that this tow truck driver had time to rest. Just then the phone rang.

“This is Operator Tungsten from the Highway Patrol.” A voice on the phone warned, “We need you for an accident on Route 8.”

As Carl reluctantly got into the tow truck and headed that way, his mind began to run over other things he could do for a living instead of this thankless job…

Maggie still had an iron grip on the steering wheel when the van suddenly stopped. On its wheels with trees all around her, she quickly turned around to check that the girls were still snug in their car seats. When she released the two babies and carefully checked for injuries, she was relieved to find nothing wrong.

Call 911 first, then David, then Mom.

“911 what is your emergency?” “I ran off the road and I’m stuck in the trees off the highway,” Maggie told them. “Okay ma’am, are there any injuries?” “No, we’re fine, but my van is stuck and I don’t know exactly where I am.” “We’ll find you, I just need a little more information…”

When Karl arrived at the scene of the fire, EMS and law enforcement officers were already there, but he did not see a broken car anywhere. “Oh great, it’s down the embankment, I’ll be here for a while,” he said to himself.

Carl pulled himself out of the cab of his tow truck, approached the officer and asked where the vehicle was. As the officer pointed down the hill he said; “See that tree down there and that little hump? It’s just over that hump to the left about 100 yards, and it ran over some trees, so it’s impossible to tell what damage is under there.”

Just the kind of work I need to finish this glorious day, Carl thought as he set to work. Unhappy with the situation, he undertook the task of blocking, winching and pulling to get the damaged van to the side of the road. After an hour and a half of recovery work, all that was left to do was load it into my wrecker and haul it back to the shop.

That’s when Maggie walked over. “Hey, good job getting it out, it went in a lot easier than it came out,” she joked.

“Oh yeah, thanks,” Carl managed. The last time he’d spent so much time working to recover a wrecked vehicle, the underinsured owner had surprised the price, so he expected the same from Maggie.

“Hey,” she said, Carl expected it. “Do you think you can give me and the girls a ride?”

“Trip?” this was not what Carl expected.

I don’t get paid for all this extra work, Carl thought.

“Yeah, I guess,” he said.

“I’m going to need a little help getting those car seats out of the van though,” Maggie suggested politely.

“Help, yes I do,” Carl muttered to himself.

With the twins in the backseat loaded, Maggie in the passenger seat, and their wrecked van on the hook, this parade could finally begin.

As they drove the 22 miles back to Maggie’s house, she started talking about her husband’s new job and how he was out of town and that her mother-in-law couldn’t pick them up because she was blindsided. doctor that day and could not see to drive. Maggie talked about the move they had made 4 years ago out of state and how she just loved the house they lived in now and on and on.

Carl listened and drove and began to think about his wife and young son and how terrible it would be if they were to have an accident while he was gone. Then, as he looked to make the turn, he saw two babies in the back seat. The light from a passing car had only shone on them for a second, but they looked happy, content and safe. That’s when he realized he was doing more than just a job, he was helping people at one of their most vulnerable times, he was helping families.
