What comes to mind when you think of a slumber party? Most people think of little girls in pajamas eating pizza and talking about boys. What was once the ideal birthday party for a girl starting her teenage years has become an almost routine party for girls as young as six. For many, the slumber party is no longer reserved for teenage girls with boys just scrambling to throw a party and catch girls.
In a way, it’s sad that the slumber party has lost its place in teenage history, because of course six- or seven-year-old girls don’t know how to properly throw a slumber party. What would a slumber party be without pizza on the floor and guys trying to sneak in to join the party? Add it to your dreams all night, talking, giggling, and making fun of the boys who are trying so hard to get in and join the girls’ fun because of course they weren’t invited.
Historically, a slumber party was a teenage girl’s “coming of age” and usually followed or replaced a 13th birthday party. Come on now, do you really think a six-year-old can justify a slumber party? Doubtful – a group of six-year-olds will fall asleep before the fun even begins. Either that or someone gets homesick and has to be driven home in the middle of the night. We owe the sanctity of the slumber party to those who made it famous, namely teenagers with their number of sly boys trying to get in on the fun. Now that, everyone, is a slumber party in its truest form, and its true meaning must be preserved for generations of teenage girls to come.
