Plan A Fun Kid Camping Activity In The Backyard!
Before summer and school start, plan a fun kids camping activity right in your backyard. Invite some friends and neighbors over for a backyard campout. A small group of children is recommended, from 6 to 8 school-age children. Borrow several tents, at least one per 2-3 kids (unless you have a large family-sized tent!), or lay flat sheets over a clothesline to make a tent.
Ask the children to make tent-shaped announcements that include information such as:
- Backyard Camp Date
- Time to show up
- What to bring, for example: sleeping bag, pillow, pj, toothbrush
- Time to be collected the next morning
- Companion information
When the kids come to the kids camping activity, schedule a barbecue with hot dogs, chips, veggie sticks and dips, and nutritious drinks. Make cupcakes decorated with coconut balls (dyed with green food coloring for “grass”) and paper “tents” on top. Put a child’s name on each “tent”.
Before dark, learn about safety tips, the location of the bathroom at night, and even where they can come in to sleep if needed. Give each tourist a flashlight or flash drive. Bug spray and a first aid kit are available.
When it gets dark, play flash tag and finger shadow games. Gather the group in a circle (or semicircle) and place a camping lantern in the center. Dim the lights and tell “scary camp stories.” Or play a story game where the guest of honor (the child whose yard is being used) starts a “tall tale” and each person in the circle has to complete the story until it ends with the guest of honor. In a small group, it might be fun to go around the group several times before the story ends.
If the night is clear and cloudless, have everyone lie on their backs and look up at the night sky. Who can find the North Star, Polaris? Who can find the Big Dipper and the Little Dipper? Look for constellations in the summer sky in your area. See if they can find any of them.
In the morning, before the campers go home, serve breakfast and have everyone “pack up.” If you want to send home small party favors, the whistle, compass and wand are popular among children.
