Follow My Directions, Please: A Fun Christian Preschool Activity

Preschoolers love to imitate. As teachers and parents, we want to be a good and godly example for them to follow. As Christians, we are to follow Christ and follow His guidance and direction in our lives. It’s never too early to teach our little ones to follow God, and here’s a fun Christian preschool activity based on James 1:22, which says, “Do not only listen to the Word, and do not deceive yourselves, but do what it says. ” I call this game “Follow My Directions, Please”.

Here’s what you do:

You will need to prepare several sets of directions for this step. Below I offer you 8 different ones that you may want to use or adapt to your situation. The second thing you’ll want to prepare is a nice scripture chart that demonstrates James 1:22. You are now ready to perform this step.

Here’s how to play:

After introducing the lesson and James 1:22, you will explain to the class that they will be saying a Bible verse. After you have said James 1:22, you will choose a child who must follow the instructions you give him. The child will then listen to the instructions you give and follow them to the best of their ability. You may want to give your child a treat for their success. After each clue, say the Bible verse together, then choose a new child to follow the new set of directions.

A possible set of directions:

Set 1:

1. Jump on the sink.

2. Wash your hands.

3. Clap your hands 3 times.

4. Sit down.

Set 2:

1. Touch your toes.

2. Turn about 2 times.

3. Go to window.

4. Sit down.

Set 3:

1. Skip around the table.

2. Jump up to the table.

3. Clap your hands 2 times.

4. Sit down.

Set 4:

1. Shout your name 2 times.

2. Give the teacher a high five.

3. Pat the top of the head 2 times.

4. Sit down.

Set 5:

1. Roar like a lion.

2. Draw a circle in the air.

3. Give way to the door.

4. Sit down.

Set 6:

1. Turn 2 times.

2. Clap your hands 2 times.

3. Give the teacher your back.

4. Sit down.

Set #7:

1. Shout your name 2 times.

2. Touch your knees.

3. Go to window.

4. Sit down.

Set 8:

1. To chirp like a bird.

2. Count to 5 out loud.

3. Hug the teacher.

4. Sit down.

Before doing this activity, you may want to introduce the lesson in the following way:

Alright boys and girls! Please follow my instructions. Touch your toes. (Wait for answers.) Clap your hands 2 times. (Wait for answers.) Turn about 2 times. (Wait for answers.) Very good. I am very glad that you followed my instructions. God likes you to allow His instructions as well. We can’t just listen to God. We too must do what He says. That’s what our Bible verse says. James 1:22 says, “Do not merely listen to the Word and do not deceive yourselves, but do what it says.” (Point to your scriptures as you say the verse. In fact, I always break my verses up into small parts and then have the kids repeat after me.) Now let’s play a fun game to help us learn this Bible verse and learn to Follow the Directions. Let’s play “Follow My Directions, Please”.
