Hauntings Don’t Just Happen at Houses

Sharing a home with a supernatural or paranormal entity has made for some fascinating horror stories, and the reasons why it chooses to stay on the earth plane rather than “move on” are often more interesting than how it turns out.

Borley Rectory in Essex, UK, has been dubbed ‘the most haunted house in England’. Unusual sightings at the property include a headless man, a woman dressed in white, unseen footsteps and ghostly whispers, strange lights, the sound of a horse-drawn coach pulling up to the front door… and the ethereal figure of a nun. wandered around the garden, bowed his head in sadness. The visions apparently date back to the 13th century, when there was a monastery on the site. A young novice fell in love with a beautiful young nun, and when the affair was discovered, the lovers were executed – the monk was hanged and the unfortunate nun was walled up alive in her monastery. Over the centuries, local residents have told many stories of ghostly encounters in and around the property. In the mid-19th century, Reverend Henry Bull built a vicarage, ignoring warnings from local residents about apparitions and paranormal activity in the area.

It wasn’t long before his daughters and his servants began encountering the ‘beings’ – ghostly knocking and rapping, footsteps and hazy images becoming a regular feature of life at Borley Rectory. None of this bothered Reverend Bull – in fact, he built a cottage where he and his son Harry rest in the evenings, waiting for the sad nun to wander past them! Harry took over the rectory after his father’s death and lived there in relative harmony with his ghostly guests until his death in 1927. His successor lasted only one year, unable to stay in the now defunct house and unwilling to put up with ghosts. In fact, the woman’s skull was discovered in a brown bag in the back of a closet soon after the family moved in. Until 1930, when the venerable Foister and his wife moved in, the ghosts were relatively quiet; perhaps rejoicing in the absence of human companions. Paranormal activity increased with the new residents and things got nasty. Guests were locked out of their rooms, windows were broken and furniture was moved for no reason.

The worst violence was directed at Mrs. Foister, who became the target of invisible assailants. Household items were thrown at her during the day and she was kicked out of bed at night. He was beaten by invisible hands and once almost suffocated by a mattress. Messages addressed to her began to appear on the walls, addressing her as Marianne (her name) and asking her to “say the prayers of the Mass” and “get help”. Famous ghost hunter Harry Price believed that a spirit was sympathetic to Foister, and her messages asking for help seemed to reflect a Catholic burden. The séance established contact with Marie Lair, a French nun who left her convent to marry Henry Waldegrave, whose wealthy family once owned the manor Borelli on the site of the rectory. Her husband had strangled her and buried her in the basement – in unholy land. She was destined to wander the estate in search of eternal rest. A few months after Maria Laira’s apparition, another spirit claimed that it would burn down the house and the body of the unfortunate nun would be found. Exactly eleven months later, the new owner knocked over an oil lamp and burned down the house.

Price found several very fragile female bones in the basement and concluded that they belonged to Maria Laira. A service was held for her in Liston and her remains were buried in consecrated ground. No sightings of the young woman have been reported since.

While there is indeed evidence that Price may not have always been honest in his work, the facts and stories about Borley Rectory have all the makings of a classic haunted house, made all the more interesting by being centuries old. Having a “Man of God” on the property did not deter the ghosts, contrary to traditional belief. I chose this example because there are so many elements to this particular haunted property, each of which is an interesting story in its own right.

Writers have made great use of haunted locations, creating a diverse selection of interesting horror stories. Here is a brief summary of some published stories that feature haunted houses. Each shows that the only limiting factor is the writer’s imagination:

Overlook Hotel In Stephen King’s movie The Shining, he began his life as the host of a community of ghosts and evil spirits. The Overlook wanted to take in young Danny Torrance because his psychic powers would give it more strength and power.

Belhedon Hall in Barbara Erskine’s “House of Echoes” is an ancient house in Essex, and no man has ever inherited the property. The new owner, Joss, learns the history of the house – in the 15th century, a powerful witch bewitched King Edward IV to make him fall in love with her daughter Catherine. 500 years later, the spell is still effective, prompting King Edward to persecute Catherine’s descendants, of which Joss is one. At the same time, Catherine’s angry ghost attacks all the men living at Belheddon Hall.

Adams, Tennessee there is a place. An apparently true story of a poltergeist is the subject of Brent Monaghan’s The Bell Witch: An American Haunting. In a twist on the traditional poltergeist manifestation, the creature in the story attacked John Bell in the family home while developing a more friendly relationship with the rest of the family. At first, Poltergeist stayed true to its supernatural roots; throwing rocks on the roof, chewing on the bedposts and pulling the covers off the beds. However, it soon changed its attitude and began to integrate itself into the Bell family. It would give the family news of distant relatives, singing in four different voices, rescuing children in distress, and allowing themselves to be touched. For three years it joked, debated theology, allowed itself to be touched and saved children in distress. When Mrs. Bell got sick, it helped feed her. At the same time, it afflicted Mr. Bell with a variety of physical ailments, from nervous virtues to paralysis. Each illness was more intense than the last, and the poltergeist did nothing to ease John Bell’s terrible suffering…

Harrows is the boys’ prep school at the Hudson River Estate in Douglas Clegg’s House of Nightmares, the final book in a trilogy based on the school. The hints of historical evil and occult experience in the first two books – “Naughty” and “Infinity” – are realized when Ethan Gravesend inherits an estate from his eccentric paternal grandfather, who built a mansion on supposedly cursed land. Almost immediately, terrifying apparitions lurk in Harrow’s shadowy halls and bleak grounds. The boarded-up room reveals the proverbial skeleton in the family closet, which serves as an entrance for supernatural forces to enter Harrow.

A good haunting story will stay with the reader forever. In the examples above, the spirit has its own story; reason to be in the building. And ghosts aren’t limited to homes either.

Since opening in 1886 in Melbourne, Australia Princess Theater has hosted several ghosts. The singer Frederick Baker, who died in 1888, singing the role of Mephistopheles in “Faust”, the rest of the cast took his bow with them at the end of the performance. For many years he has been given a vacant seat in the dress company, where his appearance at rehearsals is taken as a sign that the show will be a success…

Haunted by Ireland Leap Castle began during a dispute between two princes over the kingdom. One day, while the younger brother was giving a sermon, the older sibling rushed in and stabbed him. The combination of fratricide and an unfinished sermon doomed the castle to eternity. The name Bloody Chapel was earned when the walls turned red for no reason. During the hasty construction Manila Film Center In the early 1980s, ceiling scaffolding collapsed in the Philippines, causing workers to fall into wet cement in the orchestra pit. The cement was drying by then and in the interest of haste (and apparently on the instructions of the wife of then President Ferdinand Marcos) no rescue would be carried out and the corpse should be covered with cement. Some of the workers were still alive when this was done. The site then reported paranormal activity, particularly strange noises, ghostly voices, and poltergeist activity. Efforts have been made in recent years to appease the souls of buried workers, many of whom have passed on. But many locals claim that the ghosts of the dead workers still remain…

In conclusion, it seems that no place on earth is safe from a supernatural being; be it a house, a castle, a movie center, a forest or a highway. Inspiration is everywhere and the only limit is YOUR imagination…
