Girl Cliques – The Roles Teen Girls Play
The sophisticated social structure of the world of teenage girls is full of social intrigue and provides the political landscape for some teenage girls to take social power over their peers. Girl cliques are complex and multi-layered, and most girls assume some role within the clique. Social positions within a clique are not static, as a girl can lose her position in the hierarchy to another girl and move up and down the social totem pole.
In her book “Queen of the Bees and Wanters”, the author Rozalinda Wismane states that in the structure of a social clique, girls assume at least seven (7) different roles. These roles form the social structure of the clique and determine how each child will affect or be affected by relationships with others around them.
The leader of the clique is usually the queen bee. For this girl, her popularity is based on fear and control. Combining charisma, looks, money, will, power, and manipulation, this girl dominates her peers and can weaken friendships between other girls, thus strengthening her power and influence. Most queen bees do not want to admit the cruelty of their actions. She is the center of attention and people appreciate having her energy and strength.
The second in command within the girl clique is the Sidekick. She is closest to the queen bee and will support her regardless of her thirst to drain some of her power. She has similar mannerisms (and many times a style of dress!) to Queen Bee. Together, they seem like an impenetrable force to the other girls. Many times they bully and silence other girls to push their agenda.
Information and gossip about each other is the currency of the teenage girls’ world. The banker is the role of the girl clique that spreads this seemingly valuable information. She creates chaos wherever she goes by banking information on her peers and distributing it at strategic intervals for her own benefit. A banker can have a lot of power within a clique.
Usually a clique is one girl who may also be friends with other girls or part of another girl clique. This is the role of Floater. She has friends in different groups and can move freely between them. She may have “protective” qualities that protect her from the cruelty of other girls, perhaps good looks, good grades, etc. She avoids conflict in her core clique and may have higher self-esteem than others because she doesn’t justify her image. self-worth for being accepted within a clique.
The torn bystander is constantly conflicted between doing the right thing and loyal to the clique. She often finds herself in the middle of conflicts between other girls. She can even rationalize the disrespectful behavior of the queen bee and others despite knowing it is wrong. Associating herself with other clique girls, this role values access to popularity and high social status.
Doing anything to be in Queen Bee’s good graces, The Pleaser/Wannabe will enthusiastically support Queen Bee and Sidekick no matter what. She will imitate clothing, style, and anything else that she feels will increase or improve her position in the group. She is primarily motivated to please the girl higher up on the social totem pole than her. This role is determined not to look like it’s trying too hard to fit in.
The target is the victim of a clique that other girls have created to humiliate, ridicule and exclude them. The clique social hierarchy is maintained when someone is clearly at the bottom of the social totem pole. Any challenge to queen bee status or the balance of power in the group can make a girl a clique target. Many times this role will feel completely helpless in the face of cruelty from other girls.
Parents can make a difference in a girl’s world. Understanding the role of girls in a clique can help parents better understand what their daughter may experience during a middle school or high school day. Different parenting styles will influence how parents respond to a girl’s experience within this social structure. Exploring healthy active listening and problem-solving techniques will help girls be better equipped to navigate the world of girls.
