Reflecting on Nature’s Beauty: 20 Activities for Kids and Parents to Appreciate and Enjoy Nature

Children learn in nature schools from a scientific point of view; naming trees, learning about photosynthesis and exploring the differences between cumulus and cirrus clouds. There is another aspect of nature that many people miss.

Lacking are the inner experiences stimulated by nature, including awe, expanded perception, beauty, self-reflection, creative insight, joy, peace, inspiration, and renewal.

When you take children out into nature and spend quiet time, the silence and beauty of nature brings out the natural wisdom, love and creativity in your child and in you. Experiencing nature is real soul food and an opportunity for parents and children to grow mentally, emotionally and spiritually. Encounters with nature bring gifts of wonder, unity, harmony, self-awareness, connection and joy. Many adults and children find it easy to solve problems and gain valuable insights about their lives by relaxing their minds and spirits on nature excursions.

Here are 20 simple activities that you and your children can enjoy and thrive in nature.

Before heading out, I recommend that everyone bring a small backpack filled with lunch or snacks, water, a small spiral sketchbook or journal, colored pencils or pastels, and a zip-top plastic bag to collect natural treasures such as leaves. stones, feathers, etc.

The keywords for your journey are explore, feel, see, listen, learn, enjoy, appreciate, write, draw, discover and be silent.

Each activity lends itself to writing and drawing in your nature journal. Write down your experience.

1. Find a beautiful place and sit quietly for about 10 minutes, observing your surroundings. Then write a poem about what you feel and see here.

2. Choose a place that is different from the usual. Listen carefully and draw what you hear.

3. Watch the sky Soak in it. Now imagine you are walking through the sky. How is it. Draw it.

4. At the resting place after the hike, find something around you that you really like. What is is? Draw it or write about it in your journal. Feel the love spreading all around. Send it out into the wild.

5. Game: Nature Statue Maker. Turn yourself around and then stop in a pose that represents something in nature, a tree, grass, river, sun, boulder, ant, flower, etc. Take turns calling natural objects to pose for. When you’re done having fun with this, draw your favorite pose in your nature journal. Why did you like it best? Write about it.

6. Find a tree to sit by. Close your eyes and imagine you are having a conversation with a tree. Let it speak and you speak back. Enjoy the conversation and then open your eyes and write down what you learn. Also draw yourself under the tree.

7. Stand or sit quietly in a favorite place. Be very calm. Think about a problem that is bothering you. Observe what is happening in nature all around. Eventually, observing this will bring an idea to your mind to solve your problem. Draw or write about it. (When we are silent, our inner wisdom, our intuition provides the answers.)

8. Discovery Day. Sit down and be calm. Let something catch your attention, something you’ve never noticed before. Allow something new to fill your consciousness. Write a story about it in your journal.

9. During the hike, collect some very small natural objects that you find interesting; seeds, herbs, leaves, sticks, etc. Discuss what you have found. create a nature picture from these objects in your diary. (You will need glue for this tour.)

10. The game The most beautiful thing. Take a hike and talk about the most beautiful thing you see right now. “The most beautiful thing I see right now is…” Repeat this as you move on. Discuss why you think it’s beautiful and draw your favorite when you’re done.

11. Lupa’s journey. It can be purchased for less than $5.00. It adds a new dimension to the experience of nature. Anything that catches your eye is a great subject to look at with a magnifying glass. When you’re done, write a short poem about it.

12. Water. Find a place with a stream, pond, river, lake, etc. and sit by it. Be still and imagine that you are water. Become it and feel what the water feels. Write and draw. kids love it!

13. Game “Ball of yarn”. Use yarn to mark a square where you can sit. It can be big or small. Focus your eyes on the field and notice what is happening around you. Be aware of everything on the field. Draw it and write some comments.

14. Silent hike. Take a leisurely walk without talking. Your senses will be very alert and you will notice things that you normally don’t notice. Write or draw how it felt to be silent.

15. Bustle of flowers. Note every flower you see. Pay attention to colors, leaf shape, stem size, etc. You are only looking for flowers today. When you’re done, draw your favorite.

16. Thanksgiving trip. An appreciative attitude makes us better people. Encourage your children to be grateful. A walk/hike with the intention of feeling grateful for the beauty of nature and the trees, plants and animals that cross your path. Thank the trees for their shade and yes, hug them! Thank the flowers for their beauty, the insects, birds and frogs for their wonderful presence and all of nature for making our lives possible.

Say, “Thank you oak tree, thank you little flower, thank you yellow butterfly, etc. as you walk. You’ll feel great.

Write down what you are grateful for in nature as well as what you are grateful for in your life.

17. Meditate. Children love simple meditations. Find a quiet place and close your eyes. Have them imagine and feel peace or harmony, kindness or beauty. Just think about this thing for 5 minutes. Write or draw.

18. Find a pleasant place to be quiet. What stands out to you here? Is it the song of a bird, the smell of the earth, the wind or a plant? Open your senses and smell, see, hear and feel. When something stands out, think about how it is similar to you. How is the earth, the song of the birds, the plant, the wind similar to you? Write a poem or other thoughts about it. Pick something else you notice and do the same.

19. Nature cards. Bring 3 x 5 cards with you today. Start building a collection of nature cards by drawing one nature object on each card and writing a few thoughts about it. Draw things that you can only actually see. Put them in an index card box (prescription card box) when you get home. Build your collection little by little.

20. Imagination. In a beautiful place, let your imagination tell you about something you observe. You can start with a flower, tree, squirrel, ladybug, etc. birth and then let the baby continue. Go back and forth until your story is finished naturally. Draw.

Nature is the best entertainment! Enjoy it at any time of the year with your child.
