The Power of Play and 10 Ways to Start Today

I LOVE to play.

I know you do too! If the thought of play doesn’t excite you, I suspect it’s only because you’re likely disconnected from the part of you that craves laughter and joy.

Our desire to play is deep within us. My dogs remind me of this every night when, like clockwork, they start grabbing each other’s collars, pulling on stuffed bears, and running around the house chasing toys.

Many of my weight clients lack rest in their lives. They run from duty to duty. Their family life and work leave little time for active play, so I’m not the least bit surprised when they call me after drinking. Their soul cries out for something more. However, food will never fulfill that deep desire to create, jump, laugh and enjoy the simple joys of life.

I was saddened to read that a recent UNICEF study showed that American children are the 2nd least happy children in the world. I’m not surprised though. Look what they have for a role model. We have robbed them of their break time and show them that it is more important to climb the ladder of success than to stay on the ground and enjoy.

We have also stolen our right to play in our lives. You deserve downtime. You deserve to be silly, laugh, and be curious about your world. So try some of the techniques below to give yourself the gift of play.

1. Schedule a playtime

Just like kids have recess (well, at least when they did), adults need to schedule playtime into their schedules. When I make my weekly calendar, the game is at the top of my priority list.

If you don’t have game time in your life right now, maybe you can start with thirty minutes a week and then work your way up to at least fifteen minutes a day, hopefully more.

2. Have a game night

Remember when the adults in our lives broke into the board game and the excitement that arose in us. Board games are fun and a great way to connect with family and friends. My favorites are Monopoly and Taboo. How about yours?

3. Ditch the either/or attitude

Our Puritan roots have convinced us that we should work hard and play less, but I believe our work can be our play. Our work in the world should reflect who we are, and we are innately playful. So even if you work a job you don’t necessarily love, or even if you LOVE your job, find ways to add more play to your work environment.

Recently, one of my private clients confessed that she likes Zumba, a dance/exercise style that is becoming quite popular these days, so I had her approach her boss to see if she would be willing to let my client host a lunch. A Zumba class and voila, it worked. Now my client is looking forward to work because she figured out how to integrate gaming into her work life, not to mention she’s lost twenty pounds.

4 – Choose a sport

Sports are great! They get us outside, make us sweat, and are a lot of fun. I encourage you to pick a sport that sounds fun or that you’ve always wanted to try and take a class, sign up for a class, or just get out there and do it.

5 – dances

My daughter and I both love to dance, and I’m one of those weird moms who knows how to “blow it up,” “shred it up,” and otherwise “talk it up.” My daughter and I will drink Black Eyed Peas and just be busy, dancing, laughing, and often I end up in some sort of physical state that forces me to ask for help from the floor.

When I dance, I feel so alive, so free and so grateful for my body.

Try listening to music and just let yourself feel the music and dance!

6 – Walk barefoot on the grass

I love having my clients do this exercise, especially my very sophisticated clients who HATE the idea of getting their feet dirty.

Take off your shoes and step out into the early morning grass and feel the blades between your toes. Feel the coolness on your feet. Feel what it’s like to connect with the earth. Sometimes it’s the best catalyst to get us back in touch with our playful nature.

7- Become a stargazer

Do you remember studying the constellations in school? I found it so exciting trying to find Ursa Minor and Ursa Major.

Not long ago, I realized that even though I occasionally commented on the beautiful night sky, I had lost the wonder I experienced as a child, so I grabbed a blanket and went to look up at the sky curiously. .

Make a date with yourself and the starry sky and watch your curiosity awaken.

8 – Go to the park

Parks invite us to engage in play.

When I enter the park, I feel as if I step out of the real world for a moment.

Plan a visit to the park. Grab your dog, a Frisbee, or just a good book and enjoy disconnecting for a while.

Swing, skip, run, or if you’re brave, go headfirst down the slide.

9 – bubbles

Bubbles equal game.

As kids, we loved bubbles, but when do we lose that fascination? I’m sure somewhere in us women, we have the same awe when we see a bubble floating through the air.

As my daughter has gotten older, our bubble baths have definitely decreased, but we still use bubble baths, and sometimes I’ll run into a party favor bag with a bottle of mix and a magic wand and I’ll walk outside and with the same excitement as a five-year-old, I’ll witness how air and solution create this magical thing that floats through the air and then pops out. Amazing!

10 – Turn off the world and just be

Sometimes the best game is to disconnect from all the chatter of the outside world and tune into the presence of our essence. When you can do that, you start to have a child-like curiosity that will open up many ways to play, whether it’s studying the clouds in the sky and trying to name their shape or just walking through the woods and just noticing what’s going on around you. you.

You’re never too old to play. In fact, the older we get, the more we need it.

When you learn to be more playful in your life, you will find that the world opens up like a big amusement park and invites you in, and there you will discover a game you never knew existed.
