Transgender Day of Visibility

Today, March 31st, in case you missed it, is Transgender Day of Visibility. I’ll be honest, even though I’ve known about this day for a few years, it started in 2009 in Michigan, and I’ve had some issues with the idea. However, with the rise of anti-trans campaigns in recent years, I see more and more that this is really important, and I thought I’d post some of my thoughts on the topic today.

Most trans people want to be invisible.

These are my main concerns about Transgender Day of Visibility. I myself have been out and about for almost 20 years, yet spent over 40 years being as invisible as possible. Having worked as a trans educator for most of the past 15 years, I feel pretty safe in saying that most trans people today still want their trans identity to be invisible. They want to walk down the street and just blend in as the man or woman they wish they were born to be. And even though I’m very crazy and proud, I don’t want to walk down the street attracting attention because I look trans.

The reason for this is FEAR

Our greatest fear as humans is the fear of shame or humiliation. This is probably the main motive behind suicide attempts. As a society, we seem to despise difference, and often the response to difference is humiliation or persecution. Some take it further and commit physical violence against people they see as different. So there is a very real case of being invisible.

I first realized I was transgender when I was about 7 or 8 years old. I felt very uncomfortable about wanting to wear girl’s clothes, and most boys know this at a very young age if they wear girl’s clothes or act feminine. way, they’ll get a laugh.

In the village where I grew up, there was one family with about 11 children. They didn’t have much money, so the younger children wore clothes handed down from their older siblings. One boy, about my age, came to school one day wearing his sister’s panties. Unfortunately, it was PE day and when he changed into shorts someone noticed the pants and started making fun of him.

The other boys quickly joined in like a pack of scurrying hyenas and I watched as he stood there terrified and humiliated. I didn’t dare stand up to defend him or help him, for fear of being caught too. Instead, I just stood there and watched, feeling sick. From that day on, I knew that my secret had to remain just that – a secret.

But things change in an unexpected way.

More and more transgender people now identify themselves not as male and female, but as “neither male nor female”. They use labels like non-binary or androgynous or gender queer or any of 50 or more different labels. added daily – I know – really confusing – even for transgender people

This is what will change things. It’s very hard to celebrate Transgender Day of Visibility when I want to be invisible or unnoticed or just blend in. But this is only a problem if everyone else conforms to the gender stereotype of male or female. If a large number of people do not fit these stereotypes, then it is much easier and safer to be seen.

Is everyone who doesn’t conform to gender stereotypes transgender?

Not at all. In fact, most people who do not qualify are likely not transgender. They can be lesbian, gay, bi, transgender or simply gender non-conforming. The problem here is that people are often afraid to be blatantly non-conforming for fear of being perceived as lesbian, gay, bi, or trans.

But it also highlights a huge problem that transgender people have faced for years: passing. This is a term that means to be invisible – to be seen by everyone and accepted as a member of the opposite sex. And that’s really hard to achieve for a 6 foot tall bald man dressing as a woman or a petite woman with big breasts as a man. Passing means that everyone sees us as their preferred gender, and achieving that is a huge challenge.

Most of the time people see me as a woman – until I speak. I made the decision that I’m not even going to try to create a feminine voice – I’m a speaker – but that means I have to be seen as a trans woman. In fact, it would be much easier for me to identify as neither male nor female — to identify as non-binary, and it seems like that could be a legitimate option in the not-too-distant future.

The growing trend towards non-binary

However, while the increase in the number of people who identify as non-binary makes the idea of transgender day visibility easier, it is not without its problems. Most people assume that transgender people are people who want to undergo surgical and hormonal treatments to physically change their bodies. The reality is that most trans people don’t have surgery. Most don’t even permanently change their gender because they are too afraid to come out and be seen.

Those transgender people who undergo sex reassignment surgery are very comfortable with the gender binary. In fact, they often conform to the extremes of gender stereotypes. When I was in university, the debate about how to offer people alternative forms for ‘Male or Female’ raged on and on without resolution. There have been countless attempts to introduce third gender pronouns, but without success. Some countries have now introduced an X stamp on passports – not everyone likes it, and it’s unclear what will happen in the UK and EU.

Therefore, in my view, the importance of Transgender Day of Visibility is not only to make transgender people visible, but also to challenge gender stereotypes as many people as possible. The more people who do not conform to the gender binary male or female, the easier it will be for all LGBT+ people to blend in and become “visible invisible”.
