Beautiful Garden: The Paradise of God

“And the Lord God planted a garden eastward in Eden, and there He put the man whom He had formed” (Gen. 2:8).

The Greek name for the Garden of Eden is Paradise (gr. in paradise, “beautiful garden”). While this garden is not discussed It is certainly mentioned several times in the New Testament. In any case, we can be sure that if God planted a garden in Eden, it was indeed a “paradise” a beautiful garden.

PARADISE LOST

Let us not blame God for the terrible scars this earth now bears. Blame man and his pride and greed. Blame his marching armies, his guns and bombs. Blame his “intellectual achievements”, the ability to pollute its surface and atmosphere with toxic fumes and waste, as well as with deafening noises – it’s all progress. Blame his irresponsibility for littering its living surface with debris.

God has not placed man in such an atmosphere. Rather, “God the Lord planted a the garden eastward in Eden, and there He placed the man whom He had made.” How breath-takingly beautiful, how indescribably delightful were those surroundings! Adam and Eve in Eden must have enjoyed each other’s company as no other married couple since. only with a slight and the pleasant responsibility of “dressing” and “tending” the garden1 (Gen. 2:15), and with a special blessing for open fellowship with God, perhaps especially “in the cool of the day” (Gen. 2:19,22,23; 3:8).

But when man fell, all creation fell with him. Man now had a fallen, sinful nature. The animal creation suddenly became wild and evil, and about the plant creation God said to Adam: “Cursed be the ground because of you; in sorrow you will eat from it all the days of your life, it will also bring you thorns and thistles, and… in the sweat of your face you will eat bread. “. (Gen. 3:17-19). And to the woman He said: “I will greatly multiply your sorrows and your conceptions; in sorrow you will bring forth children…” (3:16). And even this way of life had finally to be terminated by death and “a return to the earth, for out of it,” said God, “thou wast taken. for you are dust, and to dust you shall return” (3:19). Indeed, so that man does not now eat from the tree of life and live forever, God “sent him out of the garden of Eden to grow2 the ground from which he was taken.” (Gen. 3:23). Thus we read in Romans 5:12: “

“Therefore…by one man sin entered into the world and death by sin, and death spread to all3 men, therefore all have sinned.”

Since that terrible day, man’s biggest problem has been himself a sin. It is the basis of all his sorrows and miseries, though our great works of science do not even touch upon the subject. Obviously just like fact of sin and its consequences, the intellectuals of this world abandon all consideration of the subject.

GARDEN FOR PERFORMERS

The results of the Fall were indeed disastrous, changing the human habitation from a beautiful garden to fields and woods, which must be cleared and tended by hard labor, in the face of unrelenting opposition from many quarters. However, for the redeemed who left this life, God again provided a a beautiful garden.

In “Old Testament” times, the general designation for this place of departure was sheol (Hebrew) with its Greek equivalent hades, both meaning “the invisible.” However, an examination of Luke 16:19-31 reveals this sheolor hades, was divided into two zones separated by a “great gulf” (Version 26). The term “Abraham’s bosom” (Ver. 22) describes one aspect of the place to which the redeemed went. It was the place where Abraham, the “father of the faithful,” supposedly welcomed home all his precious children. But another aspect of this wonderful place is described by the name Paradise: a beautiful garden.

In his youth, this writer somehow imagined Hades as a great two-part cavernous region, dimly lit and mysterious. But the fact that our Lord has designated the blessed area as “Paradise” highlights it in a completely different light.

How much it had touched the heart of the penitent thief crucified next to our Lord, so that the Savior himself was convinced:

“Truly I say to you, today you will be with Me in paradise” (Luke 23:43).

This assurance must have filled him with comfort and joy despite the pain he was suffering. Soon he will be with Christ a a beautiful garden! Gardens are where people go to rest and refresh, so a garden planted by God must be infinitely more delightful to be in such a garden. “with Christ”: what inexpressible joy!

PARADISE RESTORED

But according to the prophetic Scriptures, the Edenic paradise will one day be gloriously restored and greatly expanded. This will happen when the Lord Jesus Christ returns to earth to reign and Israel is saved and salvation and blessing flow from Jerusalem to the ends of the earth. Here we could quote many Old Testament passages verbatim in support, but a few will suffice:

“From Zion shall go forth the law,4 and the Word of the Lord from Jerusalem” (Is. 2:3).

“The Lord of hosts will rule on Mount Zion and in Jerusalem” (Isa. 24:23).

“Yea, all kings shall bow before Him, all nations shall serve Him” (Ps. 72:11).

“Yes, many people and strong nations will come to seek the Lord of hosts in Jerusalem and pray before the Lord” (Zechariah 8:22).

Paul confirms this in his letter to the Romans:

“And thus all Israel will be saved, as it is written: A Savior will come out of Zion and turn away ungodliness from Jacob” (Rom.11:26).

“Now I say that Jesus Christ was the servant of the circumcision for the truth of God, confirm the promises made to the fathers;

“And let the Gentiles glorify God for His mercy
as it is written…” (Rom. 15:8,9).

The results of this spiritual transformation will be far-reaching. Man will no longer have to till a depraved land and eat his bread by the sweat of his brow, for the curse will be lifted from the plant creature.

“The desert will rejoice and blossom like a rose. It will blossom abundantly… for waters will flow in the desert and streams in the desert. And the parched land will become a pond, and the thirsty land will become springs of water.” (Isa. 35:1,2,6,7 ).

Also, the curse will be removed from creating animals:

“The wolf also will dwell with the lamb, and the leopard will lie down with the kid, and the calf and the lion and the fat one together, and the little child will lead them. And the cow and the bear will feed; their young will lie down together, and the lion will eat straw like the ox. And the suckling child will play by the aspen pits, and the weaned child shall lay his hand upon the dung pit. They shall not hurt nor destroy. in all My holy mountain” (Isa. 11:6-9).

And the curse will be removed from mankind itself:

“The eyes of the blind shall be opened, and the ears of the deaf shall be stopped. Then the lame shall leap like a deer, and the dumb tongue shall sing” (Is. 35:5,6).

“From there there will be no more an infant or an old man who has not fulfilled his days, for the child will die a hundred years old;5 but the sinner a hundred years old shall be cursed” (Isa. 65:20).

Other aspects of the drop will also be removed and changed:

Everyone will know Christ: “The earth shall be full of the knowledge of the Lord, as the waters cover the sea” (Isaiah 11:9).

The government will be purged: “The king will rule and prosper and execute judgment and justice on earth” (Jer. 23:5).

War and bloodshed will be abolished: “And He shall judge between the nations, and shall rebuke many people, and they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruning hooks; nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more.” (Isa. 2:4).

Then Israel’s sufferings and sorrows will be over—and so will the sufferings and sorrows of other nations: “They shall have joy and gladness, and sorrow and sighing shall flee away.” (Isa. 35:10 cf. 40:5; 60:3).

These are the conditions that will prevail when our Lord, the rightful King, reigns on earth for 1,000 years. It really will be Paradise restoredand more.

PARADISE EXALTED or HEAVENLY PARADISE

Hitherto we have considered Paradise, the Garden of Eden, also the Paradise so graciously prepared for the believers of former ages, and the Paradise of Eden gloriously restored and enlarged during the reign of Christ.

But what about the dispensation in which we now live, a revelation that has now lasted nearly 2,000 years? Regarding the delay in our Lord’s return to rule and restore this poor afflicted world, the Apostle Paul says:

“We know that the whole creation groans and suffers pain together until now.6

“And not only they, but also we ourselves, who have the first fruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, waiting for the adoption, that is, the redemption of our body” (Rom. 8:22,23).

Oh, but the apostle also reveals a “secret”, a secret that was not made known until the risen, glorified Lord revealed it to him, not all at once, but in parts (See Acts 26:16; 2 Cor. 12:1) .

This revelation refers to the believer’s condition, blessings, and prospects in the present “time of God’s grace.” Presumably, God reserved His greatest blessings for those who should trust His Son in the age of His rejection—“this present evil age” (Gal. 1:4), for Paul in 2 Corinthians 12:1-7 tells how he was “caught up to the third heaven,” and he describes it as “Paradise”: beautiful garden! Think about it! the highest heaven (gr., epouranios) beautiful garden. This is definitely an elevated paradise! Indeed, the apostle there “heard unspeakable words” that man was not allowed to utter. Here he was in the presence of God himself, seeing and hearing things that we could not even fathom. And so unspeakably glorious was this revelation that God sent a “messenger of Satan” to physically strike him with a “thorn in the flesh.” lest he be promoted to mayorand he repeats the reason twice for emphasis (see II Cor. 12:7).

We cannot now comprehend the glory that is ours in heaven in Christ, but we can believe the Word of God that this is our position and these are our blessings (Eph. 2:6; 1:3). What we have by grace we can now appropriate by faith alonebut the time will come when we will enjoy them actually, really. Then we shall see that our conceptions of God’s presence and surroundings as nothing more than a glowing, dazzling radiance were most inadequate, for Paul was there and in all his glory described it as Paradisea beautiful garden, certainly more beautiful than anything we could even imagine.

GOD’S PARADISE

We do not have the space in this short article to go into a great deal of what God has in store for us in the ages beyond Christ’s kingdom, and why this writer believes that gradually, during the millennium, and finally in full perfection forever, the redeemed nations of earth and the redeemed in heaven there will be full and open fellowship together. Then the truth of Ephesians 1:10 will be fulfilled.

“That He may take time in the fullness of time gather together into one all in Christ both in heaven and on earth; even in Him.

Then “God’s Paradise” on earth mentioned in Revelation 2:7 will be opened to paradise in heaven! Who knows what glory awaits God’s children! We can only wait by faith to learn everything from personal experience, for of course these are some, just some of the things “which God has prepared for those who love Him.” But at least we already know that this is His gracious purpose:

“That in the days to come He would show the exceeding riches of His grace in His mercy toward us through Christ Jesus” (Eph. 2:7).

Concluding remarks

1. It was before vegetable creation was cursed.

2. Note: not to “dress” the garden, but to “cultivate” the land.

3. Everyone was in Adam and have come from Adam.

4. Now obeyed spontaneously, from the heart (Jer. 31:33).

5. That is, he who dies at the age of 100 will be considered a mere child and will die only as a judgment for the sin that will not be committed at that time.

6. Namely, the curse has not yet been removed (for the reign of our Lord is rejected and awaits the next day).
