Delayed Pregnancy Or Infertility-Childlessness?

1.0 INTRODUCTION

Delayed pregnancy/fertility occurs either in the form of prolonged periods of infertility or childlessness. Known cases of infertility are shown in the examples listed below:

• Abraham and Sarah

• Isaac and Rebecca

• Jacob and Rachel

• Manoah and wife

• Elkanah and Hannah

• Zechariah and Elizabeth, etc

The rate at which delayed pregnancy/fertility is depriving many women is becoming alarming. Many marriages in our land today are ruined due to perceived childlessness or infertility. Couples run from one herbalist, psychic or hospital to another in search of babies. It can tear families apart and has led to polygamous situations. Some even end up on bar beaches, where mermaid spirits await a few sleepless nights. They are willing to do anything in cash or in kind to fulfill their heart’s desire. Because of this, they are often cheated, maimed and killed. The questions that arise from this situation are:

• Should childless couples just pray for babies these days?

• Whose fault is it?

• Is this caused by God, or is God aware of this situation?

• Why did God allow Satan to do this to us?

• Will we ever get pregnant?

An attempt to answer these questions will be made in the last part of this article. Some people have also used some medical knowledge like insemination which helps some childless couples to conceive a child. Some people see delayed pregnancy or childlessness as God’s punishment for sin.

2.0 UNDERSTANDING THE FACT OF EVALUATED FERTILITY

God may work through various means to call us to faith, but it is wrong to interpret childlessness as a curse.

Children are gifts that come from God if we ask for them. The answer could be your child, an adoptable child, a ranger, or a group of children in the neighborhood or at church. Infertility can create an urgent crisis of faith for a couple. The inability to bear children raises profound questions about the purpose of marriage, the value of marriage partners, and their sense of belonging to the Christian community.

Why do couples get married? Couples marry to enjoy sex, to have offspring (have children) and to help their spouses. The purpose of marriage is not only to produce offspring. So, if there is a problem of childlessness or infertility or a delayed pregnancy, the marriage must also be maintained for other purposes of the contract. But most Christians today have the exact opposite. They may feel that being childless improves their relationship with God because God expects His followers to be like Christ, and this sometimes involves pain. As we recognize our ultimate goal of becoming more like Christ, we are reminded that marriage and childbearing are not our only goals in life. Having children is not our only purpose in life. Some atrocities have been committed and are still being committed by some childless couples today:

• Sarah took matters into her own hands by offering Hagar to Abraham. She had difficulty believing God’s promises and waiting on the Lord.

Likewise, some of us encourage our husbands to marry a second wife (Gen. 16:1-14) in order to produce children at all costs. This subject will be fully discussed in my next application on CHRISTIAN DIVORCE in future issues of this magazine.

In the Old Testament, a childless woman was considered a failure and a social embarrassment for her husband. The case is still the same for the modern woman. Children are a very important part of the economic structure of society, a source of family work, because they take care of their elderly parents. Some were forced to give their housemaids to their husbands or marry other wives.

Husbands were allowed to divorce barren wives. These women are devastated to shed tears at night. Things haven’t really changed since then.

3.0: TYPICAL CASES OF ASSESSED FERTILITY

Several biblical couples endured long periods of infertility before finally having children:

• Abraham and Sarah remained seventy-five (75) years after marriage before giving birth to Isaac (Gen. 16:1-4; 21:1-7).

• Isaac and Rebekah remained twenty (20) years before they fathered Israel, Esau and Jacob (Gen. 25:19-26).

• Jacob and Rachel waited eight (8) years until Joseph became the ruler of Israel (Gen. 29:31-30:24).

• Manoah and wife spent several years before they got Samson, who became a judge in Israel (Judges 13).

• Elkanah and Hannah spent several years together before giving birth to Samuel, who became a prophet in Israel (1 Sam. 1).

• Zechariah and Elizabeth also spent several years before they got John the Baptist, the forerunner of Jesus Christ (Lk.1).

If proper attention is paid to the case of Zechariah and Elizabeth, where they were both godly people who took care to keep all the laws of God both in spirit and letter, with a priestly background, in the temple service corps and aged but without children. We can carefully conclude, as David did, that children are a gift and a blessing from God, but childlessness is not a curse, but God’s inability to bestow gifts on couples (Ps. 127:3). So many cases like the above are with us in our various fellowship centers and the longest cases have been replaced by adopted children.

4.0: SOME QUESTIONS ANSWERED

There is a need to answer some of the questions asked by childless couples, and some of the answers are provided here as additional views:

a. Should childless couples just pray for babies these days?

Yes. Just pray, believing that God answers your prayers. Children are a gift from God, and only God can give this gift to whomever He decides and according to His will (Rom.9:15-16; Exo.33:19). Those before us only prayed in faith and received their gifts (Genesis 15:7-8).

b. Whose fault?

No one is to blame, especially when the relationship between you and your God is cordial and between true friends. Then the enemy may be to blame, and if childless couples understand this, it will be their duty to fight from Satan, who is subject to his gifts (Mt. 11:12).

c. Is this caused by God, or is God aware of this situation?

God is aware of the situation and has allowed it to happen so that the couple’s faith can be tested. In the end, Abraham was tested and Zechariah and Elizabeth were tested in the same way. So why not you? (Luke 1:25).

d. Why did God allow Satan to do this to us?

As mentioned in the article, there was no barren, barren, or childless woman in the Bible except David’s wife Michal, daughter of Saul, who was cursed by her husband for scorning or mocking her husband while he praised and danced. To God (2 Sam. 6:16-23).

e. Will we ever conceive?

Yes. A childless couple must conceive because others have conceived before them. God’s word is ever new among us. There will never be a barren or barren woman among us (Deut. 7:14; Gen. 18:14).

The writer was a fertility victim for seven (7) good years and when God’s timing/decision came to give us a free gift, we had a bouncy baby boy (a complete and well designed gift that made us forget the past years of locust infestation, a great gift without any blemish ). Throughout the long period of infertility, we reconciled ourselves to God, relying on His superiority and His promise to give us this gift. But we never relented, praying and fasting to arrest and reduce the power of Stan and his demons, who were used as agents of torment to deny us God’s blessings and bring misery to our marriage. After all this, and when God’s time came, we had a boy like Sarah

5.0: CONCLUSION

We must understand that delayed pregnancy/fertility is not the same as infertility or infertility, but many couples mistake it for infertility or childlessness due to ignorance or lack of patience. Remember that all the women mentioned in the Bible, namely Anna, Sarah, Rachel, Elizabeth, Rebekah and the wife of Manoah, eventually had children of their own. With the exception of David’s wife (daughter of Michal/Saul) whose case was a curse, there is no instance of a barren woman in the Bible.

When a situation like delayed pregnancy occurs in our families, we usually ask the question “whose fault is it?” and “why did God let this happen to me?”. But Paul had a similar case in 2 Cor. 12:7-9 and God, who was aware of the situation, answered him: “My grace is sufficient for you”. From then on, Paul did not speak about the problem again. In such situations, one must first understand that God has allowed it, but not caused it. If we do not face theses, and if those who came before us did, how can we tell the goodness of God to those around us? Remember, if there are no trials, there will be no testimony in our lives.

Every person who wants to become like Christ must be willing to endure pain. If we are aware of our greatest pains to become like Christ, we will remember that marriage and childbearing are not the true purpose of our creation. Having children will not allow us to create Heaven or even reach maturity in Christ. Therefore, our pursuit of children at all costs should not have the emphasis shown by those who are of the world.

When childlessness or a delayed pregnancy is accepted as part of a couple’s life struggle, the grief of childlessness must have run its course, and thus the couple begins to meet needs around them that they have not noticed until now. They can give God their longing for children. They can help in churches and fellowship centers as church teachers, counselors, youth workers, friends and confidants.

Finally, childless couples must abandon their faith and put their full trust in God. Likewise, the need to always be joyful in all situations must be re-emphasized here (Phil. 4:4-6), because only those who rejoice in the Lord can overcome obstacles. Let us commit to carry God’s cross as it is intended for us, and also receive His sorrows as we received His gifts upon us (Matthew 16:24; Mark 10:28-30).
