The Qualities of an Entrepreneur – My Top 10
Every Entrepreneur has many common traits and I have chosen what I know to be the top 10 traits and characteristics that all Entrepreneurs have.
Think about some entrepreneurs you know, people who have achieved great success in their lives, and consider what keeps them going and doing so well. Many of them have done it against all odds, and for many their drive to succeed has come out of necessity and desperation. I believe that if someone is truly desperate, they will do anything to make things better, and the power of that determination blows away any limiting factors or limiting beliefs.
Characteristics of every entrepreneur from 1 to 10:
They know what they want, they envision themselves doing it. Therefore, they have the “What” and must strive to make the “How” happen. They do this by furiously networking; rarely will a real entrepreneur talk to someone without a purpose. They may not even realize they are doing it, their natural curiosity to learn about people and thus learn what people want is characteristic of every entrepreneur. So the next time you feel like you’re being interrogated at a social event, just ask yourself, “Is this person just crazy, or are they an entrepreneur thinking about their next venture?”
All entrepreneurs have a strong belief in their abilities, although many successful people have said that they often have no idea what they are doing from one day to the next. Their inner belief is what drove them to succeed, they knew that no matter what obstacle they faced, they would not stop there. Subconsciously, they know that obstacles are what drive them, and the main motivator is figuring out how to do it and eventually overcoming it. Their belief, conscious or otherwise, is what drives them forward all the time.
3. Courage – They face their fear and just do it
All entrepreneurs have courage, although they may not admit it to themselves or to anyone else, but they have it in abundance. They may appear confident, but deep down they are shaking with nerves and anticipation, but at least they act. This is what sets an entrepreneur above all others, they always take action. It doesn’t take long to learn, they learn as much as they need to do the right thing and they just do it.
4. Ambition and determination
Every successful entrepreneur has ambition and determination, although I must say that determination is the key factor. Although they have ambition and lots of it, and they know they want better for themselves and their families, it’s not enough. What separates an entrepreneur from your average business person is the determination, the strong drive that drives them to consistently make things happen.
5. Patience and perseverance
Every entrepreneur has patience and perseverance, although entrepreneurs may have less of it than other ordinary people. This is because their vision coupled with faith and determination always drives them towards the next goal. However, all entrepreneurs know that success does not happen overnight, they know that it takes effort, and they know that they will make mistakes in the process. However, they never lie down and play the victim when things don’t go according to plan. They use this obstacle as a learning process for next time and use the learning from it to motivate them for the next challenge.
6. Creativity and innovative
Entrepreneurs are creative and innovative by nature. You can even see this trait in young children. Some kids get financial rewards for doing homework, some kids get financial support from their parents for doing nothing, and some kids go out and find ways to earn money. These are the entrepreneurs of the future. Obviously, this group is much smaller than the first two mentioned there, but that depends on their parenting. Their parents may have been raised with the philosophy that “someone makes you do something and they pay you to do it.” An entrepreneurial kid sees money-making opportunities all the time and acts on them. They make a decision and don’t wait for someone else to make decisions for them.
Entrepreneurs are nothing if not persistent. They know their idea is good, and it might just be that the timing isn’t quite right, the location isn’t quite right, their marketing approach isn’t quite right, but they’ll find a way to make things happen.
Most entrepreneurs won’t take no for an answer. When faced with this response, they can ask the question, “Do you know anyone who might be interested that you would recommend I talk to?” etc. They never allow you to close a door unless another one is even slightly open. If they can’t immediately find the “person who does it”, they will find the “person who knows what does it”. They are not always driven by dollar signs, but by the great sense of achievement that comes with a successful outcome. They always surround themselves with like-minded people, others who want to act, and will have little time for those who “talk”. Demonstrate, not declare, should be their motto!
Entrepreneurs must be honest, and the lack of this quality would be a slight contradiction in the true definition of an entrepreneur. Yes, they can be pretty vicious, but it won’t be on purpose to run over people, it’s mostly because they’re so driven. Because they are very interested in people and getting to know them, they treat them with respect, because entrepreneurs know that without the support of people, that is, potential customers, their planned event will never materialize. This is why you see many of the most successful people on this earth described as unassuming, humble, good listeners, kind, caring and always willing to lend a hand to help others. These qualities cannot be bought, they are inherent and true entrepreneurs have them in abundance.
10. Focus on the customer
Every entrepreneur knows that they are nothing without their customers. Many regular business owners also know this, so what sets entrepreneurs apart is their attitude towards customers. The main thing is that the entrepreneur truly appreciates and values each customer; they know the power of word-of-mouth marketing over other paid means, and that’s what they’re aiming for. They want their product or service to be “people’s product or service of choice” in terms of what it does for them, the value it gives them above anything else. They are constantly evaluating their competitors and offering something better, cheaper, but no less value, which is exactly what their customers want and need at the time. Low-budget airline owners are prime examples of “putting and keeping your customer first.” Of course, the people of the UK and Ireland refuse to bow to government or elite pressure, they put their customers first.
The characteristics of an entrepreneur are endless, but I have chosen the 10 most obvious ones that I know and the 10 that I know separate an entrepreneur from a normal business person.
