It’s hard to break the mold of childhood. Just adding years doesn’t make it. The addiction that many adults choose actually keeps them in a child-like mentality. If a doctor makes health decisions, an accountant makes financial decisions, a minister makes moral decisions, and a politician is left to our rights, how is it different from the fact that a child is told what to do by teachers and parents?

Childhood is definitely filled with many dos and don’ts, rights and wrongs, rewards and punishments. However, well-disciplined children are not necessarily self-motivated. Tell the kids not to chat, and maybe they won’t – for a while. Teach them the ethical concepts of confidentiality and loyalty by tapping into their inner conscience, and personality squabbling is likely to disappear. Discipline the child who followed the neighborhood leader and threw apples at passing cars, and maybe, just maybe, he won’t throw apples again. By giving him self-confidence, he is more likely to have the courage to turn away from peer pressure. Tell your child not to eat so many fries, and maybe she won’t – until the next time you’re not around. Teach her the logic behind the value of natural foods and the harmful effects of processed foods, and you’ve given her a lifelong roadmap to better health.
Growth is about thinking – reasons, causes, effects, exercises of conscience and foresight. Unfortunately, as we move away from nature, into our comfortable homes, air-conditioned cars and easy jobs, we think less and less as we become more and more dependent. We live in a time where almost every need can be met by barely getting out of your chair. No hunting and gathering today. No, the fridges are full, and if they aren’t, we can drive to the grocery store. If we are disabled enough, we can find the nearest handicap space and use a battery powered wheelchair so we don’t even have to walk. At home, we have every imaginable modern device that makes life “easier”. The TV is handy to further stun and give us a break from that tiring trip to the store and fast food stop on the way home.
Our modern world of convenience is a health trap, both mentally and physically. But we demand more comfort, more leisure, less responsibility, more fun and less work. We need the opposite, more work and activity for our physical health and more control over our lives for our mental health. We are like sheep asking to be led to the slaughter. The less we care for ourselves, the more dependent we become on others, the more we are at their mercy. Will our interests be served by others or by ourselves? Does history teach us that when we surrender to others and trust them to take care of us, it turns out that way? The rise and fall of nations over time screams a resounding no! Shall we learn from history or repeat it?
Although it is difficult in today’s interdependent, complex society, think of yourself as sovereign. Claim your inalienable rights or you have none. After all, you are the best steward of your own well-being. By regaining control, you move beyond childhood and make life more interesting, exciting, and healthy.
Here are some ideas of what I mean:
1. Need repairs or home improvements? Try it yourself. Buy do-it-yourself books and ask hardware and woodworkers how to do it.
2. Sew and mend your clothes.
3. Plant a garden.
4. Cut each other’s hair.
5. Brush your teeth.
6. Home school your children.
7. Represent yourself in court.
8. Write letters to correct social wrongs. Express yourself after being fully informed.
9. Help solve environmental crises – plant trees, recycle, reduce, reuse and actively conserve common spaces and resources.
10. Be as healthy, strong and smart as possible. You will learn how to do this; don’t try to hire someone else.
11. Cook (actually learn more about how to cook) your own meals.
12. Prepare food for your pet.
13. Study the Constitution (when was the last time you read the contract between your government and yourself?) and stand up for your rights.
14. Be your own doctor. Research and explore ways to heal yourself and reach your full health potential.
15. Learn to play an instrument. Try it yourself without lessons. Always look for opportunities to say, “I did it all myself.”
16. Challenge the “experts”. If they make you think you’re too stupid to understand, fire them.
17. Develop your own business – full or part time. Make it something you enjoy as much as a hobby. It doesn’t have to be a big money maker. It just has to be yours.
18. Or make your job your business by doing more than what is expected. Be creative and always try to improve. Be a leader at work, not a follower.
19. Go to work by bike, walk or rollerblade. Get out of the car as much as possible. Sun, fresh air and exercise are also some health bonuses.
20. Write a book or article. If you. Write about anything that interests you or that you can research. How about an autobiography? You are the best expert on this. If you can publish it, fine. If not, do it yourself.
21. Learn a new sport, but don’t take lessons. Watch, read and buy videos. Amaze yourself and others with what you can do yourself.
22. Stop buying. Necessities and a few treats once in a while are fine. But 50 pairs of high heels or 40 ties? Say no to marketers. Make a stand with your dollars. Support companies of conscience. Use your money in some way to improve our world. Be a benefactor. You take control. To serve others; don’t ask them to serve you.
23. Adopt the attitude that if another flesh and blood person can do it, then you can too. It might take longer and you won’t be as good at it, but so what?

Don’t let modern life suffocate you with its alluring lure of ease and comfort. Life is hard work if you do it right. The purpose of life is not some phantasmagoric ending we might imagine (forever elusive, by the way), but a journey well spent with you at the wheel.
