Womens Self Defense – I Still Get Chills Thinking About It
I want to tell you a story. It’s a true story, although I really wish it wasn’t.
First, I want you to imagine a self-defense class filled with eager participants. This particular class is filled with women learning to defend themselves against bigger, stronger attackers.
In fact, this women’s self-defense class is the last in a four-week program called “Ladies’ Night Out”. We focused on grounding pins and other situations related to acts typical of rape attacks.
Everyone had a great time both physically and socially. The class went great. Even the serious discussions were enjoyable and engaging because everyone was in the spirit of supporting each other to achieve what everyone agreed was a very important issue for women in today’s often violent world.
“So? What’s the deal?”i can almost hear you ask.
Well, “transaction”, so to speak, has not yet happened.
You see, the class ended with everyone in high spirits. We even enrolled a few women in regular classes because they were learning so much and having such a great time.
Nothing could be better, right?
The truth.
However…
…something could be worse. A LOT much worse.
And like I said…
I STILL get chills just thinking about it!
What is it? What could give a 10th degree Black Belt the chills and affect him more than a year after the event?
Good question.
See while the fourth hour took place. At the same time, I teach women how not to be victims…
…to be able to evade, escape or effectively fight off a savage attack…
A 13-year-old girl was brutally raped only yards from the front door of my academy!
Now, how’s that for a kicker?
While I was teaching other women, many of them this girl’s age, how to protect themselves against this thing…
…she experienced this nightmare first hand!
And like I said…
…she was only a few hundred feet tall…
…not even half the length of a football field…
…where women like her got the lessons and skills she could use to escape her attacker.
As a police officer, I remember making reports on victims who were assaulted by near bystanders or potential witnesses…
…who never knew there was an attack!
That’s one of the reasons I’m doing what I’m doing now.
I came to the realization that…
…as a police officer, I’m more about making reports than saving people from “bad guys” and…
…victims cannot depend on anything but themselves in the first moments of the attack.
So here I am… Years later… Teaching people how to effectively deal with abuse so they can go home safe and sound.
And yet reality hits me in the face because it’s happening so close to me. AND while I was teaching the very things that could have saved this girl from weeks of physical healing and years of emotional and psychological scarring.
And there’s a lesson in all of this, you know? We have to see through this girl’s suffering and pain to see it.
No. To see this, we must be able to see beyond our own apathy and inaction.
What is the lesson? It’s this one.
It sits behind our computer…
…spend watching TV…
…reading books about it…
…or thinking that “one day” you will…
will ARE NOT get the information you need to stay safe Today.
This girl, perhaps influenced by her parents, teachers and other mentors, somehow believed in one thing…
...THE one thing all victims have in common.
Because of his ignorance or denial, he believed that…
…”It would never happen to him.”
Well…
THAT happened her!
And only a few dozen feet from MY front door!
And you know what else?
I’m really excited that this happened!
No, it doesn’t upset me that there are rapists in the world… There is.
It doesn’t upset me that bad guys attack good people – They are doing.
I am fascinated by the fact that in this day and age…
- high crime rate
- daily attacks
- rape and now…
- terrorism
…that people sit idly by and either believe it, “It won’t happen to them,” or…
…they expect the government – the police – or someone else – to protect them.
Well, not only can’t, but also CAN’T. “They” cannot be everywhere at once. “They” can’t be with you 24/7.
And…
…not just CAN it happen each of us…
…the fact that there is an attack every 17 seconds in the US alone means…
…that POSSIBLY WILL BE happen.
But…
I KNOW you are aware of this fact, right?
I KNOW you don’t live in a delusional world “won’t happen”true?
I KNOW you are taking action to get the much needed lessons you need to be safe in this world….
Right?
As I have always said and the brutal attack on an innocent young girl in today’s world reminds me…
Self defense is not an option…
It is a RESPONSIBILITY!
