Succubus in the City – A Paranormal Chick Lit Fantasy
Nina Harper’s Succubus in the City is chick lit for the supernatural crowd. Think “Sex and the City” demons. Lilia, a 3,000-year-old Babylonian priestess, narrates with long descriptions of her designer’s lifestyle.
Lily is a succubus living the good life in New York. She tempts men with sex and then turns them to ashes. Three deliveries a month fulfill their duty to Satan, who is portrayed as a woman named Martha, keeping Lily busy with her job, being the accessories editor for Trend magazine, and friends. Lily and her three demon friends, Eros, Desi and Sibyl, are targeted by the Knights’ Defenders, a group of hunters who want to kill them.
PI Nathan Coleman shows up to ask Lily some questions. Her name was in the missing pharmacist’s address book. Lily is ready for love and relationships. She falls for Nathan, but can he accept the truth when Lily admits her true identity? And is Nathan really who he says he is, or is he connected to the hunters?
There is not much action. Clever dialogue and clever writing are Harper’s strengths. She does an amazing job of painting a vivid picture of New York. It’s amusing and effective, but too many details make the story secondary to the scene. The shallow label-dropping demons aren’t all that enjoyable, and the chemistry between Lily and Nathan is lukewarm.
If you like lots of girls talking about fashion, food, shoes, shopping and men, you’re going to have fun. Unresolved conflicts remain, but the scene is set for the second book, Succubus Takes Manhattan, which promises more conflict.
