It was even rumored that her dramatic weight loss and refusal to get help for it was the tragic breakup between her and her longtime boyfriend Paris Hilton.

But to be honest, Nicole Richie has seriously changed her life. She is the adopted daughter of a very public and troubled divorced couple, Lionel and Brenda Ritchie. Probably the original source of many of her emotional problems.

She battled back from very severe alcohol and drug addictions through rehab and lots of family and individual therapy.

She landed a great reality TV gig as Paris Hilton’s partner-in-crime in The Simple Life and is the author of the fiction title: The Truth About Diamonds. She is also getting married to her fiance DJ AM and seems to be very happy in the relationship.

Ok, that sounds great, but isn’t she too thin?

While it’s true that Nicole Richie looked unhealthy at first in The Simple Life and other celebrity pictures around that time, I wouldn’t necessarily have called her chubby. Instead, I’d say she looked bloated. Unhealthy from all the poisons she ingested, Richie has said in the past (on the Oprah show, for example) that she had been on a path of increasing alcohol and drug abuse since the age of 13.

While in the clean – it is very likely that Richie began an extremely disciplined exercise and diet to regain her health and control her life. And then it went – overboard.

Many times, people who suffer from some type of addiction – alcohol, drugs, overeating, gambling, etc. – will replace that vice with another intense activity, addiction or obsession. Therefore, it is not recommended that people who participate in a 12-step program start dating each other. Instead of occupying themselves, they simply replace the energy spent on getting drunk or courting new relationships. Then the relationship becomes too intense, too fast and quickly fades away because there was no real foundation.

Nicole Richie may have simply replaced years of addiction with a compulsion to take control of her life and feelings in other ways, and controlling her food intake is one way she may have chosen to take charge of her life.

Of course, this behavior can easily turn into a full-blown eating disorder because it is based on the principle of “control,” which is where these disorders usually begin.

The Bottom Line?

Well, the point is, while she may have her reasons, Nicole Richie is too thin – too thin – too petite. Hopefully, despite all the media attention on her weight, she will get “real” help and attention from her friends and family, as well as guidance from a mental health professional who can help her channel her energy into more positive avenues.
