The True Story Behind the Film – ‘The Exorcist’

Most people have read the book (1971) or seen the movie (1973) The Exorcist, where a young girl called Regan McNeil was supposed to be possessed by demons. However, this movie was actually based on the true events of a boy named Roland Do.

This story became the inspiration for one of the most popular horror films of all time.

Author William Peter Blatty was inspired to write this book after he discovered exorcism diaries written by Jesuit priests during and after Reverend William S. Bowdern’s repeated attempts to extort thirteen-year-old Roland Doe.

In 1949, William Blatty was an English student at Georgetown University when he began reading newspaper articles about the exorcism of Roland Doe. He then approached his tutor, Reverend Thomas Bermingham, informing him of the story. The Reverend then proceeded to investigate further and discovered that Roland Doe’s diaries had actually been written by a Jesuit priest.

Unfortunately for Blatty, he could not get permission to read the diaries, so he had to turn to lengthy newspaper investigations, which led to some surprising discoveries:

In January 1949, a young boy, Roland Doo, and his dysfunctional family began experiencing strange occurrences in their home. The location is still undetermined for many reasons. One of them is:

Years later, when Blatty asked Father Bowdern during the making of the film if he should visit the Doe family, the father insisted that the family’s location and confidentiality remain a secret to protect the boy. However, I can reveal, it was Maryland, USA, or Mount Rainer, USA.

Wherever the true location may be, the family’s troubles are known to have started with a minor disturbance, namely the sound of scratching heard in various parts of their home (usually from the ceiling or walls). This led the family to suspect a rodent infestation. However, after contacting a rodent control company who conducted a full investigation, the house was found to be free of infestation.

It was not long before the cause of these disorders began to assume a more dramatic and ominous role.

Roland Du was to become the unfortunate victim of this relentless phenomenon.

While sleeping, he began to experience violent episodes of bed shaking and the sheets were pulled from his bed. The intensity of these attacks increased rapidly and the family could often hear and see them.

When Roland’s family became convinced that these attacks were real, they also began to associate Roland’s obsession with the Ouija board. Roland got into this ‘game’ thanks to his Aunt Tilly, who introduced him to it before her death on January 26, 1949 – eleven days before the paranormal activity began.

Although Roland’s mother suspected that Aunt Tilly was the cause of the ghosts, the family had to act quickly as concerns grew for Roland’s welfare.

Since Roland was baptized a Lutheran by birth, the family invited two Lutheran ministers to help, one of whom was Pastor Luther Schulze. They were accompanied by a rabbi who was believed to be there only because he knew about this kind of suspicion.

While the rabbi was assessing the young boy, Roland is said to have suddenly started muttering in a language he didn’t know before.

The two Lutheran pastors had no idea what Roland was saying, yet the rabbi understood every word…Roland spoke the rabbi’s native Hebrew – fluently!

THE WONDER’S CONTACTS WITH THE DECEASED ‘AUNT TILLI’

After researching several conflicting articles about the Roland Doe exorcism and studying the diaries of Jesuit priests, I can now give you the facts related to the exorcism and the actual exorcism to the best of my knowledge.

I first understood from reading the various analogies that Roland’s mother held several Ouija sessions to communicate with Aunt Tilly, however I discovered that this was not the case:

Roland Doe’s mother suspected that the recently departed Aunt Tilly was the cause of Roland’s relentless torture regime. In one episode where Roland was being terrorized by this unknown force, his mother shouted, “If it’s you Tilly, knock three times.”

Immediately, a cold breeze rushed up and wrapped its icy breath around Roland’s mother, grandmother, and then Roland himself. Then there were three distinct knocks on the floor that all three of them heard.

Mrs. Doe asked doubtfully, “If it’s really you, Tilly, knock four times.” Again, all three heard four knocks on the floor…but most alarmingly, claw-like marks were later discovered on Roland’s mattress.

However, Aunt Tilly was later dismissed as the cause as the paranormal activity was transferred to Roland’s school. Roland was shocked when his school desk began to move on its own in front of the horrified teachers and school children. This later resulted in Roland being expelled from school.

Doe’s family were understandably traumatized, as were fears for Roland’s health as the apparitions mounted. Reverend Schulze was brought in to observe the attacks on Roland. Over the course of several nights, Schulze witnessed the boy lay in agony—wrapping his arms and ripping the sheets. However, the reverend was still not convinced of paranormal activity and sent Roland to the University of Maryland Mental Hygiene Clinic for tests. The tests came back with resounding results… Roland was not considered abnormal.

Still skeptical of paranormal activity, Schulze asked Roland to stay at his parsonage. Schulz’s main goal was to find out if Roland’s home was haunted or if it was Roland himself.

On February 17, 1949, Roland was taken to Schulze’s house, where he would spend the night and Schulze would watch over him. The Reverend would not be disappointed.

During the night, the Reverend stated that distinct scratching noises were heard coming from Roland’s room. Schulze then went into the bedroom and was horrified to see Roland being knocked out of the chair he was sitting in and the bed next to him vibrating.

Schulze later observed that scratches appeared on Roland’s body before his eyes. The reverend realized that time was now of the essence and advised the Doe family to contact the Catholics.

Roland’s parents were now so desperate; they decided to take Roland to Father Albert Hughes St. James Catholic Church in Mount Rainier.

Meanwhile, a very concerned cousin of Roland’s, who was a student of Father Raymond J. Bishop at St. Louis University, confided in him about the paranormal activity going on in the Doe household. After concluding that he had no doubt that she was telling the truth, he decided to discuss the matter with his old friend, the Reverend William S. Bowdern.

Father Bowden would continue to be the prime mover behind the exorcism of Roland Doe.

THE EXORCISM OF ROLAND DUE

It was now clear to Roland Do’s family that evil had possessed their 13-year-old son after he presided over many Ouija board meetings. Their only choice was to visit Father Albert Hughes St. James Catholic Church in Mount Rainier for evaluation.

Father Hughes was initially incredulous and hesitant about the matter. Still, he agreed to do the interview…in the face of perhaps one of the world’s most unimaginable, extraordinary property cases ever known.

THE INTERVIEW

It was reported; As Father Hughes began interviewing Roland, the icy breath the Dune family had felt during their ‘supposed’ encounter with Aunt Tilly had returned with hostility.

Still skeptical, Father Hughes continued the interview, which was soon followed by Roland, who blurted out a tirade of ungodly language directed at the Father. Hughes was clearly stunned, but still remained unconvinced. However, this was quickly dispelled when Roland suddenly became fluent in Latin. A language he had never studied.

By the end of the interview, Father Hughes apparently had no doubt that Roland Dou was indeed possessed, for he immediately contacted his archbishop, Cardinal O’Boyle, and asked him for permission to perform an exorcism. This was confirmed after the cardinal studied the case and the medical evidence.

EXORCISM

Roland Doe’s first exorcism took place at Georgetown Hospital. Before the ritual, Roland was securely tied to the bed, which was standard practice.

As the exorcism began, Roland went on a spitting frenzy directed at Father Hughes. The discharge was reported to be sent with such force and incredible purpose, it was described as “supernatural.”

The exorcism then ended when the young boy started yelling obscenities at the Father and broke free from his restraints. Roland then displayed strength far beyond his years and condition, yanking a metal bedspring from the bed and slashing his father’s left arm, resulting in Hughes needing more than 100 stitches.

Roland immediately calmed down after Father Hughes left the room – not to mention the exorcism; it was as if all memories had faded into darkness.

After the exorcism, Roland did not require hospitalization and was sent home. Meanwhile, Father Hughes could not comprehend what he had just witnessed and suffered a mental breakdown.

However, the matter was still not over; something had to be done to help Roland. After his cousin had spoken to her professor, Father Bishop of St. Lois University (mentioned at the end of Part Two), it was decided that he and his good friend, Father Bowdern, would visit Roland.

On March 9, 1949, Father Bishop and Father Bowdern together with a young Jesuit priest, Fr. Walter Halloran went to Roland’s home. During their visit, they were horrified to discover that Roland’s body was mutilated with bleeding scratches on his chest. Another phenomenon was observed, which led the priests to ask Cardinal Ritter to perform another exorcism.

The exorcism was granted by Cardinal Ritter on March 16, 1949… soon after, the priests began the exorcism rites.

The exorcism was gruesome from the start, with reports of violent bed movements, extremely hateful language and extensive spitting by Roland. When subsequent bloody scratches showed the words “hell” and “devil”, it was decided, for everyone’s safety, that the exorcism should continue in the psychiatric ward of the Alexian Brothers Hospital.

At the hospital, Father Bowdern began the exorcism, reciting prayers from the Roman Rite. While Father Bishop was writing a diary of the events.

Roland then screamed in obvious pain as the prayers continued. At one point, Bowdern was clearly shaken when the boy spat out the words: “I’m in hell – I see you – you’re in hell – it’s 1957.”

Roland then started spitting at the priests again. Fr. Halloran allegedly said that Roland was an absolute shooter when he spat, he stated that even with his eyes closed Roland would spit right in your face.

The exorcism continued for nights, each episode becoming scarier than the last. Once Roland exploded in such rage, he punched Halloran with such force that he broke his nose.

Bowdern began reciting the Roman Christian exorcism ritual over and over:

‘I cast you out, unclean spirit, with the least interference of the evil enemy and every ghost and diabolical legion. In the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, depart and disappear from this creation of God.

After several hours of recitation, Bowdern and the others were alarmed when Roland sat up straight and announced in a booming voice that he was “the Archangel Michael” and demanded that the demon leave Roland.

Roland squirmed, contorting his body into vague positions until he finally lay down. Then he sat up and spoke in his usual voice, announcing to all the relieved witnesses that he had just seen a vision of St. Michael holding a flaming sword. The exorcism was successful!

Twelve days after the exorcism, Roland’s family moved from St. Louis to Maryland. Roland later wrote to Father Bowdern saying that he had settled down and had a very vague recollection of what had happened to him.

Roland Doe’s latest report is about a happily married man with three children who still lives in Maryland.

Documentation has been submitted to the Catholic Church stating that Roland Doe’s estate was “genuine” with the signatures of forty-one witnesses to the events.
