Les Miserables: Eponine
“Pretending he’s by my side. There’s never been anyone like him. When I’m lost, I close my eyes and he’s found me.” Les Miserables is one of the longest musical plays and novels in which people want to have a revolution and some kind of mercy and justice. This novel shows the history of France and its culture. Now in France, the city of love, all women are prostitutes and will do anything for money. This review will focus on a girl who wants to be better than her boyfriend. Are you ready to be redeemed so that they will accept and love you for who you are?
Thénardier’s daughter Eponine, who is 16 years old but has the rough and unhealthy voice of an old woman. She was spoiled so much by her parents since childhood because her parents are so blind to money. Her mother is a prostitute so she can earn money. As she grew older, they became poor because Valjean adopted Cosette for money. They spent all their money and ran out of money, so they had to move to a small apartment. She met Marius, a law student who lives next door to them and abandoned his rich father. When she first meets Marius, she bursts into his room and asks for money. They become close and Eponine falls in love with Marius, her prince charming. She wants to be good so that he will notice her, but her prince saw Cosette and asked if she knew her whereabouts. Although it hurts her a lot, she is willing to help him. She takes Marius to Valjean’s house, where Cosette lives. She waited another moment to see Marius and Cosette talk about their feelings for each other. She saw that her father and his sons wanted to rob Valjean’s house, but she screamed for someone to hear her. She shows courage when her father threatens her. She saw the letter Cosette left for Marius and got it so she could give it to him. She is willing to save Cosette, even though she has good reason to hate her rival, but she wants to save him because it would make Marius happy. She walks, then it rains, as if the sky knows what she feels, then she sings her feelings. A martyr? Maybe. Before she could hand him the letter, she took the bullet from him. She uses her last breath and last words to tell him how she’s always felt about him, saying, “You know, Mr. Marius, I think I was a little bit in love with you.” How is Eponine different in that her parents are literally the scum of the earth?
Eponine symbolizes redemption, great patriotism and rain. She changed because she wants to be better so that Marius will notice her. She will give everything for her loved ones, even if she gets nothing. She is like rain, even the sky is raining, and she can feel hopeless and sad that after the storm there is always a rainbow, there is another day and another hope. She is one of the most tragic and heroic figures in the novel.
Les Miserables deserves a round of applause. It’s very inspiring, but some parts are tragic. It also shows many traits that people can mirror. It conveys the message that anyone can change for the better if they want to and that love conquers all. The novel was brought to Broadway, a good choice indeed. It could win multiple awards because the artist did justice to the characters. It spans the decades as Jean Valjean breaks parole, takes a young girl named Cosette under his wing, all the while on the run from Javert; everything like the french revolution will happen. Production, design, costumes and the film itself are handled brilliantly. The audience felt that they were back in France, but still felt that they were watching a musical on stage. The actors own their scenes, like when Eponine sang “On my own”. Overall the movie is an excellent movie and they delivered the message to the audience. We all feel the emotions of the movie and every scene is worth watching. However, they should give Eponine a little more scene because her story is super youth, looks and marriage. They also include symbols like the yellow ticket when Valjean finally gets out of prison they gave him a yellow ticket which is a ticket to freedom but it is more of a ticket to a life of misery because the ticket symbolizes social exclusion. Silver candlesticks symbolize goodness and how Bishop Miriel wants to help poor people. Cosette’s doll symbolizes the transformation or change that will soon take place in her life, when Valjean first visited her he gave her an expensive doll. It was a great film and novel tribute to the artist, writer, director and all the people who made Les Mirerables.
