Yamakasa Festival

The ancient country of Japan has many traditional festivals. Kyushu is located on the southern island of the Japanese archipelago. Of all the prefectures on the island of Kyushu, Fukuoka Prefecture is the most populated. And of all the festivals in Fukuoka every year, the biggest and most famous festival is known as Hakata Yamakasa. Today, the Hakata Yamakasa Festival is considered one of the three biggest festivals in Japan. If you want to know more about the Yamakasa Festival, please read on.

The Hakata Yamakasa Festival is a tradition spanning over 760 years. The origin of the Yamakasa Festival is linked to an epidemic that was raging in Fukuoka at the time. The Buddhist monk Shoichi Kokushi was said to have been carried on the platform in 1241 when he prayed for an end to an epidemic. Since then, the people of Hakata have emulated this event every year from July 1 to 15.

Hakata is divided into seven districts, and each district creates a unique float for the Yamakasa Festival each year. Initially, seven teams will carry the floats for five kilometers, starting and finishing at Kushida Shrine. At first, the floats were carried along the course at a leisurely pace, but in 1687, to make the event more exciting, a race was created. It is said (although this writer cannot verify the claim) that the race first started because a woman from one district married a man from another district. That year, the two districts competed fiercely to take the lead in the course of the festival. After the 1687 “run” it stuck in the festival and also became a tradition. Now that the race starts on July 15, the first float starts at 4:59 a.m. and the others swim five minutes apart. Floats must not pass each other during the race. The race is to see who can complete the course in the shortest time possible.

Yamakasa is an event open only to pre-pubescent males and girls. It may be considered sexist, but if you saw the uniform that the contestants were required to wear, you’d understand why women don’t participate. in this festival. You may also be deeply disappointed that they don’t participate. The original uniform worn by the members was nothing more than a loin cloth. Honestly, it covers less human shame than underwear. When the Meiji era came along with the westernization of Japan, the government banned the wearing of a loincloth because it showed too much of a person’s buttocks. Yamakasa organizers then announced that participants must wear a small cloth jacket that partially covers the buttocks. Apparently the government allowed this, and thus participants could wear a loincloth as long as they also wore a jacket. Having seen the Yamakasa event in recent years, I can say that the jacket also hides almost nothing.

The Yamakasa Festival floats are a work of art in themselves. There are two different types of floats. One type is called kazariyama and the other type is called kakiyama. Kazariyama floats weigh about one ton and can be up to 15 meters long. This type of float is very decorative with many beautiful colors and some very recognizable for some very obscure characters. This type of float is displayed somewhere in Fukuoka city from July 1st to 15th. Kakiyama floats are floats that are raced around the course on July 15th. These floats weigh up to one ton, but are nowhere near as tall as the floats pictured. The reason racing floats aren’t very tall is because the invention of electricity and electrical wiring made it impossible to run very tall floats on the streets. Not impossible, but things would have gone shockingly wrong if they had decided to go with high floats.

Early in the morning of July 15th, the Yamakasa teams gather at Kushida Shrine to prepare for their race. People from all over Japan come to watch the event. As many as 800,000 spectators attend this event, with reports of up to 1,000,000 spectators. At 4:59, two types of spectators gather at the event. One type is people who get a few hours of sleep the night before and feel fresh for an early morning party. The second type of people take a more dubious path. This type of person decides not to sleep the night before and instead consumes large amounts of alcohol to help them sleep. Needless to say, it is easy to tell the difference between the two different types of people.

Kakiyama is a heavy float. And it doesn’t get any easier with up to six men sitting on top. These six men are the leaders of their group. They have participated in previous Yamakasa festivals for years and have finally earned the right to slouch and be carried during the run. Basically all they do during the race is shout “Oissa” which is supposed to be a cheer and motivational tool for their team. However, this writer would hardly be motivated by the “leaders” who sit on their backs while I and 29 other men carry them and an extremely heavy float around Fukuoka city center for five kilometers. But, I think, to each his own.

Yamakasa lets the audience participate! That’s right, the spectators are allowed to throw water on the participants in this race. All along the five-kilometer track, there are people waiting to comfort the passing half-naked and tired men and children. Quite a few people go so far as to bring buckets to the event. Many local shop and home owners who have a water tap and hose are happy to fill other people’s buckets. However, the participants are not the only ones who are doused with large amounts of water. As mentioned above, there are two types of people watching this Yamakasa event. The second group, the sleepless and intoxicated, tend to enjoy wetting both the audience and the participants. Girls, be careful standing next to someone who has a bucket and smells like a bar mat. You may soon find yourself less in need of a bath and more in need of a towel. And it doesn’t end there. With such a large number of people attending this event, the police will of course be needed to maintain order. Female peace officers are indeed a worthy cause. This writer has witnessed the deliberate soaking of female police officers. And what did the individual officer do when she was soaked to the bone? Absolutely nothing. Yamakasa: If you attack the police with water, you don’t get arrested. Good times. Good times.
