Teens, Jobs and School: The Pros and Cons

Most teenagers understand the old adage that “money equals power” at a fairly young age. Money equals designer clothes, cars and insurance, and in many cases some freedom. And to get money, many teens get part-time jobs.

Although the advantages and/or disadvantages of teen and part-time work have been researched, studied, and debated since at least 1979, the verdict on teens, jobs, and the impact on schoolwork is still out in the open. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, 50 percent of American teens under the age of 12 work informal jobs, such as babysitting or yard work. And by age 15, nearly two-thirds of American teenagers have worked in some capacity. And many researchers, including those on government panels such as the National Youth Commission, praise part-time work and argue that it facilitates the transition from youth to adulthood.

Parents and educators alike have said for decades that part-time jobs teach kids about responsibility and money management. But Temple University researcher Lawrence Steinberg found that only 11 percent of students report saving most of their money for college, and only three percent contribute to household living expenses. “The majority of teenagers’ money is spent on clothing, cars, entertainment and, in some cases, drugs and alcohol,” according to a 1998 study published in the Harvard Education Letter.

Steinberg says, “Students who work longer hours report less school engagement, lower school performance, increased psychological distress, higher drug and alcohol use, higher rates of delinquency, and greater autonomy from parental control.” A 1997 study by David Stern, director of the National Center for Vocational Education Research at the University of California, Berkeley, supports Steinberg’s point. In a study conducted over 20 years, students who worked more than 15 hours a week had lower grades, did less homework, had higher dropout rates, and were less likely to go to college than students who worked less than 15 hours a week .

But Gerald Bachman of the University of Michigan’s Monitoring the Future project cautions against jumping to cause-and-effect conclusions. “I would argue that most of the problems that correlate with long hours are more caused,” he says. “It may contribute to the spiral, but I think the spiral is well developed at a time when they choose to work long hours.”

While there are many disadvantages to having a busy part-time job, there are also advantages. Teen work can teach job skills that aren’t taught in school, and it can instill new confidence, responsibility, and independence in a teen. Earning money will allow your teenager to buy things and manage money. After-school work can also provide adult supervision, especially if you work longer than a normal school day. And the right job can provide networking opportunities and put your child on a rewarding lifelong career path.

But before your child gets a job, there are a few things you should know. According to the Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industries, “Minors under the age of 14 shall not be employed or permitted to be employed in any occupation except as children employed on farms or as domestic servants in private homes.” Children under the age of 14 can also work on farms, be golfers, newsboys or teenagers in the entertainment industry. But special permits may be required.

Also, according to many national labor laws, 14- and 15-year-old teenagers are not allowed to work more than four hours a day during the school year and no earlier than 7:00 a.m. or after 7:00 p.m. under the age of 16, under Pennsylvania law, for example, is prohibited from working in bowling alleys (unless as snack bar attendants, scorekeepers or control desk workers), heavy lifting, working on a highway, and anywhere alcohol is sold or served, manufacturing, on scaffolding or ladders and window cleaning.

Some state laws state that 16- and 17-year-olds “may not work before 6:00 a.m. or after midnight on school days and 1:00 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays.” Also, no more than eight hours a day and 28 hours a week. (During the summer, the only restriction on 16- and 17-year-olds is that they may work no more than eight hours a day or 44 hours a week.) Young people under 18 are prohibited from working in pool halls; performing electrical work; elevators are working; carrying out crane and lifting operations; digging; operate machinery that performs woodworking, mixing, cleaning, greasing or pressing bakery products; roofing; welding; and perform demolition.

Getting your teen a job is a big step toward adulthood. Be sure to discuss the pros and cons with him. You can also agree to work on a trial basis, such as “you can work x number of hours per week during this evaluation period, and then we will decide whether you can continue to work based on your grades.” Maintaining good grades, continuing extracurricular activities, and maintaining a social life will be important to your child’s psychological health and development. Also, create a budget with your child, setting spending limits and implementing a percentage of your paycheck toward savings. Good money management skills learned at a young age will last a lifetime. Part-time work can be a wonderful experience with the right supervision and parental guidance.
