Tips For Losing Pregnancy Weight
Diaper bag…check, Wipes….check, stroller…check, small…check, extended belly and buffalo bottom??? check. 🙁
If you’ve had kids, unless you have a trainer and a chef, or you have a crazy high metabolism, then you’ve probably experienced how difficult it can be to lose weight after pregnancy. Face it… your body just changes. It looks different, it hangs different, and you may have fat in places you didn’t know existed before.
Many women simply accept these changes as just part of life. Seriously, when you have a new kid who really wants to focus on getting back in shape? You have this cute little person to look at and play with all day. Who wants to take time away from their baby for exercise???
But does it really have to be? Do you really have to choose one or the other? Do you really have to completely change everything in your life to finally get your body back?
I’m here to tell you that you CAN have both. Believe it or not, it doesn’t take that many changes to slowly reach your weight loss goals. Consistency is key; you can’t lose it overnight. And no matter what anyone says, including your OB, you should start your weight loss goals on your own timeline, not someone else’s.
Make sure you get your doctor’s approval before starting a weight loss program; 4-6 weeks after birth is a good rule of thumb.
Here are 7 tips I personally used to lose over 50 pounds after my first pregnancy:
1) Drink water like it’s going out of style.
Seriously. Especially if you are breastfeeding. I’ve heard people discredit the importance of water by saying that you can over-hydrate yourself, and while it IS theoretically possible, it’s much more likely that you’re dehydrated. Basically, you have to work hard to become over-hydrated for this to happen. Pregnancy takes a toll on your body, and your body cannot fully repair itself without adequate water. Also, your body can’t focus on losing all the pregnancy weight without enough water. It takes water to lose water weight in your system. So definitely have a drink. Try plain old water too if you can drink it; It is better not to drink excess calories. Try drinking a cold glass of water first thing in the morning when you wake up. Not sure if it’s just my imagination or not, but I find that doing this gets your system primed and primed to burn calories.
2) Buy the Baby and Mom Yoga DVD…and use it! 🙂
I know it can be really hard to get a lot of “me” time. And when I have “me” time, the last thing I honestly want to do during it is exercise. I’d rather read a good book or take a hot tub. That’s why I really love yoga DVDs for mom and baby. Then you can exercise while spending quality time with your newborn. And the baby will love watching your face and sleeping with him on the floor. It really is a win-win. Much better than waiting for the planets to align, you can run to the gym.
3) Breastfeed if humanly possible.
I’m saddened to learn how many doctors have told my friends, “Why are you struggling to breastfeed, it’s just as healthy to breastfeed, just as good for your body, and much more comfortable” when the facts are true. it is not supported at all. I wish doctors would at least tell women all the facts and then let them decide. If they still choose the formula, that is their prerogative. But they should know all the facts first.
So what’s the deal with breastfeeding lose weight during pregnancy? Lot of. Not only does it contain the best natural nutrients for your growing baby, it also requires about 500 extra calories to produce milk. Plus, breastfeeding helps your uterus contract and shrink back to its original size faster, minimizing how long you still look pregnant after giving birth. If that’s not motivation enough, consider this; the only vitamin “missing” in breast milk is vitamin D, the sunshine vitamin (because most mothers are deficient, not because breast milk doesn’t contain enough). What’s a great reason to make sure you get out of the stroller and take a walk in the park to make sure both you and baby get their fair share of sunlight? Best of all, since breastfeeding is proven to boost your baby’s immune system, you’ll spend less time dealing with ear infections and colds and more days chasing your kids and getting them outside, helping to melt away that fat.
How much more convenient is the formula? I can’t speak for everyone, but I love that there are no bottles to clean, no nozzles to keep track of, no formula to mix, no run out of formula to run to the store, no waste, no clean up, and most of all, hardly spit. Plus, once you get the hang of it, you can breastfeed practically anywhere without anyone being the wiser.
Ok, I guess I’ll stop rambling now… 🙂 It really helps move things along though.
4) To walk!!!
Can’t say enough about the walk. It really doesn’t get the attention it deserves. So many people will tell you that you need to exercise 5 days a week using the bowflex or the gym to get back in shape. This is simply not true. Believe it or not, your body wants to get back to its pre-pregnancy weight. So all you have to do is move around. Be sure to start slowly. Every little bit helps. Try to walk more stairs or park further away from the store. You can even walk the perimeter of the grocery store before you start shopping, or walk around the living room while the baby naps. If you need an extra boost, why not carry your little one instead of using a pushchair from time to time. Carrying a 15-pound infant for just an hour burns 246 calories for a 155-pound woman. This can be easily achieved if you simply break it down to a few extra minutes throughout the day.
5) Continue to take prenatal medicine.
When taken with vitamins, you give your body everything it needs to lose pregnancy weight. With the lack of sleep and time that comes with being a new mom, it’s easy to not get all the nutrients you need. Your body needs to know it has all the vitamins it needs on a daily basis before it releases all the stores it has built up for your pregnancy. Taking vitamins every day helps ensure this. What vitamins help in particular? Vitamin E, chromium picolinate, and B complex vitamins are said to help with weight loss; so make sure any prenatal you choose includes these essential vitamins.
6) Eat more fiber and good fats.
You need fat to burn fat. Try adding more olive oil, nuts and fish to your diet. Avocado is your friend!!! They are probably one of the healthiest things you can put in your mouth! Adding more good fats will keep you fuller longer and help you burn off any fat stores you no longer need.
For fiber, try using whole wheat flour instead of white, and eat plenty of asparagus, broccoli, spinach and other green leafy vegetables. Instead of using stool softeners and laxatives, be sure to eat extra fruit as well. No, carbs won’t kill you. 🙂 Fruits are good for you!! Also try buying ground flax seeds and adding them to your yogurt, cereal, oatmeal or even pancake mix. When you’re withdrawn and feeling bloated, you don’t want to exercise or move. So, do your body a favor and get more fiber!
7) Get rid of all the artificial stupid!!!!
Ditch the low-fat margarine, avoid the low-calorie snack cakes, and spit out the Diet Coke. Have you ever noticed that most people who eat all these things are overweight? It is much better to eat a little real butter than to drink low-calorie margarine, which is nothing more than hydrogenated oil. If you’re ever curious about what’s actually in a margarine spread, here’s the list of ingredients for Smart Balance margarine:
MIXTURE OF NATURAL OILS (PALM FRUIT, SOYBEAN, RAPOSE AND OLIVE OILS), WATER, CONTAINS LESS THAN 2% SALT, WHEY (from MILK), VEGETABLE MONOGLYCERIDES AND FATTY ACIDS, SORBITAN ESTERS, FATTY BUSSIOUS LACTIC ACID (TO PRESERVE FRESHNESS AND CARE FOR HAIR), NATURAL, NATURAL CALCIUM DISODIUM EDTA, VITAMIN A, VITAMIN B6, VITAMIN B12, VITAMIN D, VITAMIN E (TOCOPHEROL ACETATE), BETA-CAROTINE
What’s in butter?
Cream, salt and milk. I asked for butter. 🙂
Likewise… a little sugar isn’t as bad as artificial sweeteners, which I believe cause cancer. After giving birth, your body needs as much natural food as possible. Not chemicals. The same goes for Diet Coke. I’ve even heard this supposed “health guru” tell a room full of people that he lost weight by drinking Diet Coke all day. The calories you save by drinking Diet Coke over regular Coke can help you drop a few pounds if you’re used to drinking huge amounts of soda, right? However, the chemicals you are consuming are not improving your health one iota. If your goal is just to lose weight during pregnancy, then by all means drink Diet Coke. However, if you are trying to be both thin and healthy so that you can run with a new bundle of joy and live a long healthy life, do yourself a favor and stop drinking all the diet drinks. Include water, natural tea or even smoothies made with honey. Your body will thank you later.
It can be quite difficult to lose those extra pregnancy pounds. Hopefully these few pointers will help you on your way to your weight loss and fitness goals. Just remember to start slowly, focusing more on just some exercise for at least 30 minutes a day, rather than Iron Man workouts. Drink plenty of water and be sure to eat fats, fiber, vegetables and fruits, especially avocados. Good luck and lose your pregnancy weight for good!
