"Don’t Tell Papa" Starring Seung-ho Yu
“Don’t Tell Dad” is a somewhat sweet film about an 8-year-old boy named Cho-woo (superbly played by Seung-ho Yu) who lives with his single father. His dad works as an MC in a nightclub for meager wages. His boss keeps him on because he’s cheap.
Cho-woo’s life is quite difficult. He has never met his mother, whom he believes to be dead, as she fled to America soon after his birth. Her parents are wealthy and disgraced because their daughter was not married when she became pregnant. Cho-woo has to spend all his after-school hours at the club with his father. Cho-woo and the owner’s son constantly fight, which causes more problems between his father and the boss.
Eventually, Cho-woo’s mother reappears in Korea. She meets her former lover and their son, but the two do not recognize each other. When she finally realizes who he is and that the little boy she’s in love with is her son, she decides she wants to be a part of his life now. Cho-woo’s father knows he’s not perfect, but he doesn’t think she has the right to barge in and tell him how to raise his son after 8 years. The boy, not knowing that the woman is his mother, is infatuated with her and tries to get his father to marry her. This causes more problems between father and son.
The main problem with this movie is that it tries unsuccessfully to mix humor and drama. If the humor was actually funny, that might be a different story. All the jokes are just a mix of vulgarity and rudeness that only detracts from the true story of a motherless boy searching for answers.
However, the other side of the coin sees the young Seung-ho Yu, in a wonderful performance, become a confused and naive boy whose greatest joy in life is to please his father. All of his scenes, whether he’s laughing, crying or just thinking about life around him, are memorable and heartwarming. This movie is worth watching, but could have been much better without the unnecessary dirt and grime that the viewer has to skip to get to the heart of the story.
