To Be Pregnant or Not to Be? Lesbian Pregnancy

I feel my five-year-old daughter’s warm breath against my neck as she sleeps snugly in my arms. It’s been a hard day and she’s sick. As I hold her feverish little body and gently caress her head, I am filled with motherly joy – there is nowhere I would rather be (even under these circumstances). Holding a child gives my life meaning and purpose, and without that attachment I would be an empty person.

The only reason I know this is because before my child was born, I walked this planet quietly lost. It was her life that set me right, ironically in the nicest way. I lived my life according to the rules and morals that were social norms. I always did what I was told and maintained a level of perfection that suffocated me.

The birth of my daughter gave me a strength that had been stirring beneath the surface. I realized that life has no boundaries and I am the only person responsible for the obstacles I faced because I built them all. I am completely in love with my child and the beauty she brings to my life. She started a domino effect that created the peace, stability and balance that was lacking.

For the past five years I have struggled with the idea of having another child and it has been a constant mental debate. When is the right time? Is this the right partner? What about money? And where do I get the sperm from? It would be so much easier if I only liked boys, wouldn’t it? Well, maybe not, because I know that heterosexual couples and heterosexual women have their own internal turmoil of fertility and childbirth to deal with.

My girlfriend has made it clear from the beginning that having children is the main goal of our relationship. One option already made only increased the joy of having more children. We looked at our beautiful baby girl and decided to do some research and call my medical insurance company. Our conclusion: making a child a lesbian is hard work. We needed more advice.

So I went to my gynecologist and told her that “this lesbian wants a few more babies,” with a big smile she gave me her blessing and the name of ONE fertility specialist willing to work with a gay couple. Really? Unfortunately, yes. I was given the names of three other fertility specialists that I had to avoid at all costs because I would not be helped and services would be denied because of my sexual orientation.

To be honest, I’m not easily brought down, but there was something about this conversation that filled me with a depression that lasted for a few days. Here I am trying to start a family with someone I love and I already have a beautiful daughter that I provide for financially, emotionally and even spiritually and I would be MATCHED services. For all my efforts to be a well-adjusted partner and mother, it still wasn’t enough to qualify me as a medically eligible member of society. It’s awesome!

Today, I am not sure if I will have a child in this political climate. And some may call me a coward, and they’re right, I’m afraid. History has proven its power to destroy and torture. And while many will argue that we will never go back to the atrocities of World War II, I urge you to address their folly. There are currently countries where genocide is taking place. Even today, I have very real fears about my daughter growing up in a lesbian home that has nothing to do with my partner or our relationship, but the world around us.

I’m still going to see a fertility specialist at ONE and see where I go from there, but here are a few things you should consider before you start planning a baby the lesbian way:

  1. Consider that having a child is a lifelong commitment. Are you ready to take on this responsibility?
  2. Have you thought about how you will manage childcare responsibilities and balance work and family?
  3. Are you ready to parent a child with special needs if you have one?
  4. If you have a partner, are you both equally committed to parenthood?
  5. If you and your partner have religious differences, have you discussed how they will affect your child?
  6. Where do you stand with your identity? Your sexual orientation?
  7. Are you financially stable? Middle-income families will spend $286,050 to raise a child from birth to age 17.
  8. Are you emotionally stable? Women who suffer from depression are twice as likely to experience fertility problems than women who do not.
  9. What is your medical history? Find out if you have any genetic or chromosomal disorders, such as Down syndrome, sickle cell disease, cystic fibrosis, Tay-Sachs disease, or bleeding disorders. You’ll also want to know if any relatives have mental retardation or other developmental delays, or if they were born with an anatomical birth defect, such as a heart or neural tube defect.
  10. Your age. Age matters, especially for women.
  11. Do you have a support system – it really does take a village to raise a child and you better make sure it’s a stable and healthy one that supports you.

Let the journey begin…
