Fig Leaves For The Catholic Faithful
I remember sitting in a Catholic church as a boy. I had always wondered why during Communion some people sat or knelt in a very prayerful, reverent posture, while others trudged forward to receive the bread and wine. As time went on and the time between my confessions became too long (in my opinion) and the types of sins I was capable of committing became “worse” (again, in my own opinion) I found that , would also abstain from communion because, in my opinion, i was just being disrespectful.
Unworthy? Over time, the Lord has given me my share of service opportunities for Catholics. Here are some examples:
CASE 1: I met a beautiful Catholic woman in her 40s who told me she had not taken communion for 10 years. Why? Because she was divorced and felt unworthy.
CASE 2: Another Catholic woman, a single mom, confessed to me that not only did she miss communion, but she felt unworthy to even enter the church doors. Why? She was also divorced.
CASE 3: In the cafeteria at Bible study, a young Baptist college student introduced me to a friend, a lovely Catholic girl he had met at school. During Bible study, she was very vocal, eager to read the verses, and had a lot to add to the discussion. She then asked me to pray for her. She said she wanted to become a nun, but she also had a strong desire to raise children.
CASE 4: A Catholic woman became pregnant as a teenager and gave the child up for adoption. She later married another man and was unable to bear children. She wondered if she was being punished for her past sin.
CASE 5. A devout Catholic man had an affair many years ago. As a penitent, he engaged in his religious practices, becoming completely professional; dedicated to the model of the ideal Catholic man. In outward appearance, a pillar of faith; inwardly, like Samson, he was enslaved by these pillars.
WHO SAID YOU’RE A PICA?
Across denominational lines, the Church has told all people that they are separated from God, that they are guilty, and that He is angry with them. We go so far as to preach that unless they attend church on our appointed day, at our appointed time in our particular denomination, they remain separated from Him. Heaven forbid that someone present sins – at least sin in a way that others can notice (pregnancy out of wedlock, divorce, you know…one of the “big ones”). letters” from now until Doomsday, as they say.
Do you remember what God said to Adam after he and his wife ate from the tree? God saw that they had covered themselves with fig leaves, and when Adam said that they covered themselves because they were naked, God replied, “Who told you that you were naked?”
We must answer the same basic question: “Who told you that you have sinned?”
Our responses could include:
— My teacher.
What about “The Devil”? You see there is NO CONDEMNATION for those who are in Christ (Romans 8:1). There are two voices in heaven, we read; Jesus who intercedes for the saints (that’s actually you and me, not dead Christians – LIVING), and Satan who constantly accuses the “brothers” (and sisters).
Just as Noah’s sons went in backwards and covered his naked body when he collapsed from drunkenness, after the other son paid attention to him, Jesus covers our nakedness.
Do you remember reading where He said to the sinful harlot, “You tramp! you’re going to hell!” No, because He never did. How about the one where He told the fat man that there was obviously sin in his life or he would get thinner and then be happier and have a better paying job and more dates? No, hardly. His usual response was “go and sin no more.” If anything, He repeatedly told those He served, “Tell no one,” and they ran off and told EVERYONE.
To the woman “caught” in adultery (or wasn’t the MAN caught?), Jesus said, “Woman, where are your accusers? Has no one condemned you?” She said, “No man, Lord.” And Jesus said to her, “Neither do I condemn you: go and sin no more.” (John 8:10-12)
To the paralytic in Mark 2:5 He simply said, “Son, your sins are forgiven.
When some guys let their friend down through a hole they made in the roof so that Jesus saw fit to heal him, Jesus was amazed. Luke 5:20 tells us, “When Jesus saw their faith, He said, “Friend, your sins are forgiven.
While dining at Simon’s with a group of Pharisees, Luke 7:36-49 reveals how a “sinful” woman came in with a jar of perfume. She stood behind Jesus at his feet and wept, and began to wet his feet with her tears. Then she wiped them with her hair, kissed them and perfumed them. Verse 44 says, “Then He turned to the woman and said to Simon, “Do you see this woman? I entered your house. You did not give me water for my feet, but she wet my feet with her tears and wiped them with her hair. You didn’t give me a kiss, but this woman hasn’t stopped kissing my feet since I walked in. You did not pour oil on my head, but she has poured perfume on my feet. Therefore I say to you: her many sins are forgiven, because she loved much. But he who is forgiven little loves little.”
Then Jesus said to her: Your sins are forgiven.
Hebrews 10:18-19 reminds us, “I will remember their sins and their iniquities no more. “And where they are forgiven, there is no more sacrifice for sin.” Did you notice: no hoops to jump through; performances required, no obligations. Just faith .
Unworthy? Not in your life! Don’t believe the enemy’s lie that anything you ever did made you unworthy. I am convinced that NOTHING can separate us from the love of God (Romans 8:38-39). Friends, there are NO VIP sinners! To wallow in guilt and cling to thoughts and feelings of unworthiness is to tearfully declare, “Thank you for the crucifixion, Jesus, but I’m JUST NOT GOOD ENOUGH!”
For these five cases above, in each case I shared what you just read.
In case 1, the woman was happy, smiled tearfully and assured that she understood. I believe with all my heart that she resumed her faith practice.
In the 2nd case, I had actually driven 4 hours to teach a Bible study that never happened upon arrival. This woman had asked me to come to her office so we could talk. After sharing with her something similar to what you just read, she exclaimed, “I know you’ve come a long way to get here, but if all you did was tell me what you just said , IT WAS WORTH IT!” She has since been engaged to a Baptist boyfriend from her youth.
In the 3rd case, after the young lady told me that she wanted to be a nun but also loved children, I assured her that if it was truly her calling, a nun could love children too. As a Catholic boy, several nuns had quite an impact on my life; they loved children and it showed. I remember them fondly. She is married now.
In case 4, this woman now understands that God does not punish His family. He loves her and has a plan for her life. She is happy to serve the Lord and has reacquainted herself with her child.
In the 5th case, we can only believe that God will give this individual the truth and that he will receive God’s grace (Eph 2:8,9), come out of his mode of operation and experience the freedom that has been bought for him. with the blood of the cross. Does this sound like YOU or someone you know?
Even though you may not be Catholic, believe me, the devil has no problem condemning non-Catholics for their past mistakes and current slavery.
How many sins had you committed 2000 years ago, after the crucifixion? Are not.
So if your sins were forgiven, how long did that “offer” last? For 150 years? 1233 years? How about 3000 years? You see, everything you have ever done – or ever will do – is either 100% forgiven by the shed Blood of the Lamb of God that TOOK AWAY the sins of the world…or it wasn’t. It does not give us permission to be evil. After all, we will reap as we sow. But we can rest in hope that God’s mercies are REALLY new every morning.
We have REALLY made excuses.
God REALLY sees Jesus when He looks at us because we are the righteousness of God in Christ.
Our debt has REALLY been paid.
Now, is there someone that YOU need to forgive?
