Reflections on You’re Gonna Miss This by Trace Adkins
Ok, it took months for me to finally purchase Trace Adkins Greatest Hits Volume II “American Man”. I listen to all kinds of music, including country, and I’ve always liked Adkins, but the main reason I bought this CD was because of “You’re Gonna Miss This.” I remember hearing the song a few times on the radio earlier this year, and of course I watched Adkin sing it on the finale of Donald Trump’s “Celebrity Apprentice.” I hadn’t heard the song in a while and just bought the CD and listened to it a few times already.
Those are the lyrics of the song that really touched me. The first verse talks about a girl who can’t wait to grow up and her mom tells her she’s going to miss it. In the second verse, the girl is a brand new bride and tells her dad that the small apartment is only temporary as she talks about babies and a bigger house, etc. Her dad tells her to slow down, she’ll miss it. The last poem is five years later, when a woman apologizes to a plumber for her busy house, when the phone rings, a baby cries, and another child screams. He tells her he doesn’t mind because he has two kids of his own, one 36 and the other 23. He says it’s hard to believe, but you’ll miss it.
The chorus after each verse is as follows:
You will miss it
You’ll want it back
You will wish these days
It hadn’t gone by so fast
These are some good times
So take a good look around
You might not know it now
But you will miss it
Wow Trace, this song reminds me of another song on the CD “Songs About Me”. But this song is about all of us.
I find myself thinking back to my younger days. Did I want to grow up and get out of high school and sometimes when I was young. Do I miss some of those days now that I look back. I remember hating the army at times. FTA was a battle cry that didn’t mean “Follow Top’s Advice” as my friend First Sgt. (Above) one day when he was caught writing his initials in the snow behind the barracks. I remember the times in college, the times in Japan, the times in Korea, many times during law school when I didn’t want to be there, how I wanted things to change. Now I look back and miss those days so much. Well, maybe not in law school, but it doesn’t seem as bad now as I thought at the time.
Now that I am a father, these lessons are even more powerful. My little girl, Cosette, is four years old and has just started preschool. She is growing up so fast and I already miss some of the days when she was little. I still love all the new things we do every day, especially because she’s like her dad in that she loves books. She is trying very hard to learn to read and write. On the first day of preschool, she told her teacher that she could not read well yet. Her teacher told her that was fine and then told my wife and I that it wasn’t until kindergarten that they started teaching zoophonics, a system of learning letter sounds and reading phonics. I thought to myself, “She already knows the sounds that all the letters make, by next year she’ll be reading in Kindergarten. I think she’ll be ahead of the curve, just like me.”
So while I love helping her read and write, I also miss some of the things that have now been passed down when she was very young.
But here’s the kicker. There are times when I’m overwhelmed with work, bills, writing projects, teaching, and other goals I’m working toward, and I have less time than I have for her. For example, tonight I only have a short time to come home from work, eat, spend some time with him, and then go to the gym to train and teach hapkido. I think of Adkins’ song and realize I’m going to miss this one. I miss those times and so I need to spend as much time as possible because it will go by so fast.
Everyone tells the younger generation that time goes by faster as you get older. They say it because it’s true. Each year goes by faster than the last. This makes the lessons of “the time is now, the place is here” that Dan Millman teaches in his Peaceful Warrior training all the more important. Not that they aren’t necessarily important, it’s just that you pay more attention to it as you get older.
Or at least it should. Some people don’t, and that’s sad. Because they are the ones who will probably miss it the most. What miss? Missing life. I recently wrote about living after hearing about a friend’s 41-year-old relative who died of a heart attack. We must not miss life. We mustn’t try too hard to get to the next stage, because believe me, it comes too quickly, as it is, that is, if you are lucky enough to get to the next stage. Many people write about this concept in different ways. I have written about the subject and also spoken about it. I am sure that I will continue to write and speak on this topic in various ways in the future. Why? Because it’s important. It is very important! I thank Trace Adkins for recording this song written by Lee Thomas Miller and Ashley Gorley to remind us once again how important it is to live life and live in the present. Enjoy what we have because we will miss it. There are other songs, other books, other lessons on the same topic, and maybe I will write about them in the future. I’m also glad I bought a CD for another song I have to write about as well. But that’s for another day.
For now, remember, the time is now, the place is here. Living life. Live now. Looking back, “You’re going to miss it.”
