Dangerous Shower Gel? 16 Truly Frightening Additives in Products You Use Every Day

According to the US Poison Control Center, “A child is accidentally poisoned every 30 seconds and more than 50% of all poisonings occur in homes involving children under the age of 5.” But of course you keep cleaning supplies out of reach and only use baby products to keep your family safe, right? But what exactly is in all these products, and what about the chemical residue left in your carpet, on your child’s pajamas, in the air your family breathes every day?

Because young children are smaller than adults, they are exposed to more pollutants per pound of body weight. Their tiny bodies and immune systems are not yet fully developed, and they are at greater risk from cumulative exposure to chemicals found in everything from air freshener to laundry detergent.

Below, I’ve listed some common ingredients and why you’ll never want them in your home again. Note how many seemingly benign products such as deodorant and shower gel contain these harmful ingredients. And remember that even though they may be in small amounts, you put them on your skin, hair, clothes, and air every day, year after year.

AMMONIA

Ammonia is fatal if swallowed. 80% of all produced ammonia is used as fertilizer. It is also used to make synthetic fibers, plastics, and explosives, and is added to many cleaners, detergents, window cleaners, stain removers, bleaches, dyes, and floor waxes. Swallowing even a small amount of liquid ammonia in a household cleaner can cause severe burns to the mouth and throat. If you get it in your eyes, it can cause blindness. Ammonia is a corrosive substance that can burn the skin, eyes, respiratory tract, mouth and digestive tract.

AMMONIUM HYDROXIDE

Ammonium hydroxide is a colorless liquid chemical solution formed when ammonia dissolves in water. It can also release ammonia gas into the air.

It can be found in many industrial products and cleaning products such as floor strippers, brick cleaners and cements. This chemical can cause difficulty breathing, coughing, severe pain or burning in the nose, eyes, ears, lips or tongue, esophagus, stomach or throat, vision loss, severe stomach pain, vomiting, severe pH changes (too much or too little acid in the blood causing damage to all the organs of the body), holes in the skin tissue and other symptoms.

BENZENE

This carcinogenic chemical can be absorbed through the skin and irritates mucous membranes. It is poisonous if swallowed and inhalation of vapors can be toxic. EPA and OSHA cite it as a public health hazard. This chemical is found in oven cleaners, detergents, furniture polishes, stain removers, and nail polish removers.

Diseases associated with benzene include acute myeloid leukemia (AML), non-Hodgkin lymphoma, chronic lymphocytic leukemia, myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS), myelofibrosis and myeloid metaplasia, aplastic anemia, acute lymphocytic leukemia, thrombocytic leukemia (ALL), purpura, chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML ), hematological cancers.

CHLORINE

This widely used chemical is a suspected carcinogen and certainly a powerful irritant, causing many poisonings each year. The Clean Air Act of 1990 lists it as a hazardous air pollutant…yet you breathe it in every time you use it in your laundry or bath and tile cleaners. And the excess air remains in your toilet paper, paper napkins and paper towels.

Household bleach, used to whiten fabrics or remove mold from surfaces, is a 5% solution of a stabilized form of chlorine. It is a strong corrosive substance that irritates or burns the skin, eyes and respiratory tract. If swallowed, it may cause pulmonary edema or vomiting and coma. Never mix bleach with toilet bowl cleaners or ammonia. Fumes can be DEADLY!

FORMALDEHYDE

Formaldehyde is highly toxic and a known carcinogen. It is used in the production of adhesives and is also a preservative in deodorants, disinfectants, cosmetics, vaccines and is used in body embalming. Formaldehyde is used in shampoos, conditioners, shower gels, liquid hand soaps and bubble baths. Baby products like bubble bath and baby shampoo even contain formaldehyde! Some of the health effects of formaldehyde exposure include eye, nose, and throat irritation…wheezing and coughing…fatigue, skin rashes, and severe allergic reactions. Formaldehyde is also used in permanent press sheets, mattresses, foams, plastics and building materials.

GLYCOL ETHER

Glycol ether can cause skin, eye, nose and throat irritation. It can also be dangerous for the reproductive system. This chemical can damage the kidneys, liver and central nervous system. It is quickly absorbed through the skin and is found in some household cleaners, paints, cosmetics and perfumes.

Also known as butylcellosol (2-butoxy-1-ethanol, ethylene glycol monobutyl ether, butoxyethanol, and butyloxytol).

HYDROCHLORIC ACID

Hydrochloric acid is corrosive and irritates the eyes and skin. It can dissolve and destroy sensitive tissues on direct contact. Vapors easily irritate the eyes, nose and throat. Contact can cause burns, permanent scarring and even blindness. This chemical is found in aluminum cleaners and rust removers.

PETROLEUM

Kerosene (mineral spirits) irritates the eyes and skin and can damage lung tissue. It is neurotoxic. Kerosene may contain carcinogenic benzene. It is found in all-purpose cleaners, furniture polishes and waxes.

SURUM

Sodium hydroxide (also known as lye, caustic soda, and lye) is an eye, skin, and respiratory irritant. It can burn eyes, skin and internal organs. Alkali can cause lung damage, blindness and be fatal if swallowed. It is found in household cleaners, oven cleaners, bath and tile cleaners, toilet bowl cleaners and drain openers.

MORPHOLINE

Morpholine is extremely toxic. It irritates the skin, eyes and mucous membranes and can cause liver and kidney damage. It reacts with nitrites to form carcinogenic nitrosamines. It may also worsen lung/bronchial disease or make breathing difficult, burn the skin, cause blindness, stomach pain, diarrhea, nausea and vomiting. This chemical is found in all-purpose cleaners, furniture polishes, and car waxes.

NAPTHALENE

Naphthalene is an eye and skin irritant and can cause cataracts, corneal damage and kidney damage. It is suspected to be carcinogenic. This chemical is extremely toxic to young children and infants and can cause blood damage to the fetus. This chemical is found in mothballs, air fresheners, deodorizers, carpet cleaners, and toilet bowl cleaners.

ORGANIC SOLVENTS

Organic solvents (carbon disulfide, n-hexane, methyl-n-butyl ketone, toluene trichlorethylene, perchlorethylene) are neurotoxins and central nervous system depressants. They are known to be carcinogenic. These chemicals are found in all-purpose cleaners, degreasers, metal polishes, lacquer and varnish removers, dry cleaning solutions, paints and coatings, and adhesives.

Drinking water contaminated with perchlorethylene causes leukemia and birth defects. Prolonged overexposure can affect the nervous system. This chemical is found in stain removers, degreasers, and dry cleaning fluids.

OIL PRODUCTS

Petroleum products (benzene, toluene xylene, benzene, naphthalene, and Stoddard solvent) are strong eye, skin, and respiratory irritants and are known or suspected carcinogens. Neurotoxic effects can cause organic brain damage.

You are exposed to them in many common products, including heavy-duty cleaners, stain removers, furniture polishes, car wax, lice shampoos, home and garden pesticides and flea control products, furniture polishes, and laundry detergents. Don’t assume these products are safe just because they haven’t been banned (yet).

PHENOL

Phenol (alkylphenoxypolyethoxyethanol and nonylphenoxyethoxylate) is highly toxic and possibly carcinogenic. This can cause swelling, acne and hives. If swallowed, it can cause circulatory collapse, convulsions, cold sweats, coma and death. This chemical is found in all-purpose cleaners, air fresheners, disinfectants, furniture polishes, and laundry detergents.

SODIUM BISULFATE

This corrosive chemical is harmful to the eyes and skin as well as internal tissues if swallowed. It can cause asthma attacks. Found in toilet bowl cleaners and deodorizers

EDTA

Also known as ethylenediamine tetraacetic acid or diammonium, this chemical is found in laundry detergents and is a skin irritant. It also irritates the mucous membranes, causing allergies, asthma and skin rashes. This chemical is not biodegradable. It binds to heavy metals in our lakes and streams, affecting our water supply.

Now that you’re armed with some information, read the labels before you buy! Look for labels that say the product is phosphate-free (phosphates cause excessive growth of aquatic plants, causing fish and other aquatic life to suffocate). Phosphates are found in laundry detergents, dishwasher detergents, and all-purpose cleaners. Look for products that specifically state “phosphate-free,” “solvent-free,” “petroleum-free,” etc. Even better, look for products that contain only plant-based ingredients.

You can find healthy and natural alternatives, although it is not always easy. Our Organic Eden website has lots of great links shown below.
