The ‘Notey’ Way to Learning

She was smart and even though she didn’t understand the value of the currency, she knew it was important for her to protect her mini bank against her siblings’ attacks. While I was fascinated by her wit, I was troubled by the thought of how I could channel her curiosity to increase her interest in the math she dreaded. And this in a playful way to keep them hooked.
So I outlined some fun activities that could keep her busy while on vacation while helping her understand the science of “MONOLOGY”. Here are a few I could think of:
Sorting and stacking: We opened the lock on her piggy bank and emptied it onto the carpet. The next step was to ask her to stack all the similarly colored notes separately; coins to be sorted and stacked according to their value. The next step was to have her calculate the value of each pile and write the same on sticky notes, clipping it to each bundle. Dive into the crisp notes. It was a pleasure to watch her meticulously count the notes and coins, and even more happy to do so.
Length bar scaling: The new currency introduced was thinner and shorter than the previous ones, not to mention brightly colored. This gave rise to another idea to introduce him to values. I asked her to take one note from each pile and place them according to their length. I followed this session by asking her to identify the highest and lowest values in the pile. National Flag Math: I combined geography to create a twist in the game, not just to break up the monotony of the calculations so she wouldn’t understand my intentions. So I gave her a chart that listed all the country flags in the world along with the country names. I asked her to arrange the notes in a shape to make the flag of each country. If colors were missing, she cut the paper into the shape of the notes she used to make the rest of the flag and dyed it the desired color. All she had to do was reach into her new wallet and keep the cost of each design at the top of the image. She pored over the fashions and carefully calculated the price, placing the final amount on each image. Hello! She knew exactly how much she could grab and the money she would need to raise for her next shopping spree.
