Family Caregiver – Part 1 – Caring For Elderly Disabled With Parkinson’s

We have been married 32 years so it was good times before he got sick. I don’t have any degrees or titles that qualify me to offer these Parkinson’s disease tips other than being a family caregiver for my husband. We have been living with this disease for the last 12 years. At first he was only mildly affected, but over time his disease has progressed to a wheelchair patient. For the first 6 years, I was his sole caregiver, living with his limitations and getting to know them, which changed daily.

He was 71, I was 49, 22 years younger. Desperate, I was desperate for help to cover his medication and help adapt the house to his needs. Everywhere I tried there was either no program to help us or we only had dollars. Finally one day I made the right contact at the PA Public Welfare County Agency on Aging in our county.

I had tried there the previous year and was told there was no program to help. Every couple of months I called there again and again. On my last call I accidentally selected it at the beginning of a new program and was able to register my husband. The program was not just for Parkinson’s patients, but for any elderly person who might otherwise be placed in a nursing home. The goal of this program is to keep the elderly patient in their own home, out of an institution, for as long as possible. We have been registered for 6 years. This program has been life saving, life changing.

I am still a family caregiver, but this resource

* has provided us with a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) to help me care for him and allow me to regain a few hours of my day.

* helped us adapt our home so he could use the bathroom and stairs.

* has given him prescription coverage.

I strongly encourage you to seek help from this agency if you have or have a senior who needs help. There are other agencies that can help in different ways. Keep knocking on the door, keep calling.

Our age difference has benefited this relationship and our ability to cope with the demands of his condition. If I were older, I would not be physically able to take care of him at home. The strange thing is that if I were sick, since I am not (yet) a senior, I would not be able to participate in these programs. Some of you may be in this position and I don’t know what advice to offer you.

Hope you find the help you need. By the way, I also have two older black labrador retrievers, 11 years old and on medication, as family caregivers in my house. Could family help? We have no children. My husband has four children from a previous marriage, only one of whom is in contact with him. She took care of her mother-in-law until she passed away a few years ago. She knows what is involved in taking care of her father, but she has no time due to other commitments.

I try to let her know when his condition changes and she offers moral support. It seems that all of us at one time or another have the responsibility of being the family caregiver. Struggling with his various conditions has given me reason to create some interesting items to help me care for him.
