Potty Training – A Simple 4 Step Formula for Initiating Toilet Training

“I’m so done with diapers!” moans a mother, looking at the big price tag on the big package of diapers. “Is it time for my child to start potty training?”

Potty training is a big milestone for children. But how do parents know when to start? Intuition, expectations, common sense and observation play a key role in starting potty training.

Step 1 – Create a parent/child team

Potty training is a joint effort between parents and children. Some parents may assume they are in charge, while other parents put the child in charge. In reality, potty training is a partnership. Parents provide support, potty training tools, books and dry clothing; children do “go”.

To be successful, it is important to understand that potty training is a team effort between parent and child, not a command and control situation. A firm, impatient goal puts pressure on the child, leading to stress, anxiety and, in some cases, delays in potty training.

Step 2 – Starting early does not guarantee quick results

In-depth studies on intensive potty training have shown that starting the process early is actually associated with an extended duration of potty training. Those parents who start training early find that the potty training process takes longer.

Children need to develop bladder and muscle control before they can control going to the toilet. Parents can follow this approximate schedule of readiness: 15-18 months, the child feels that his clothes are wet; At 18 months, the child can urinate on the potty if it is put on; A 2-2 1/2 year old child can alert a parent to go; and at the age of 3-4 the child can have the ability to “hold” and visit the bathroom alone.

Step 3 – Determine readiness based on child’s development

When deciding to begin the potty training process, chronological age may not be the correct indicator of readiness. Parents should look for signs that the child is ready for development. This is especially true for premature babies and children with developmental delays.

Some signs of good readiness include: the child can sit and walk well, the child can stay dry for 2 hours or more, the child is interested in doing what older children or adults do, the child can follow and follow simple instructions, and the child seems to understand what the potty is for and uses words that refer to using the toilet.

Parents should assess the child’s temperament. Important questions to ask are: is the child able to concentrate, what is her attention span, does the child get easily upset, does the child get angry or discouraged easily.

Most children are potty trained between the ages of 2 and 3, and most children are potty trained by the age of 4.

Step 4 – Continue Now!

Today is the day! Parents need to make sure that the child is in good health and the household is calm with no upcoming upheavals such as a move, bringing home a new baby, or a parent going on a trip.

Dress the child in clothing that is easy to remove, such as sweatpants with an elastic waistband. Snaps, buttons and zippers are difficult for little hands and time-consuming to manipulate when the urge strikes. To reduce the pressure on the child, let him stay in diapers during the first days of potty training. Gradually change him to underwear for short periods as his dry time gets longer and longer.

A nap after a meal or when you come in from outside is a good time to encourage your child to jump on the potty. Parents need to be on the lookout to know when their child might want to go.

Take the child to the potty and stay with him. Bathroom visits should be short and sweet; five minutes is enough time. Offer reading material or use a fun potty training tool or toy to keep the five minutes engaging. Important: if the child wants to get out of the potty before five minutes, do not force him to stay.

Praise, praise, praise! Small milestones deserve lots of hugs and kisses. Indeed, a little boy can jump on the potty, put on his pants or go to the bathroom (even if only a little late). Be kind, patient, sensitive and proud. Never blame your child for accidents.
