Mapping The Gender Gaps for African Women in Technology

Goal 5 of sustainable development, 5.6. (b) the purpose is very clear; improve the use of basic technologies, especially information communication technologies, to promote women’s empowerment. From this I can formulate the possibility of achieving target 5.6(b) by 2030, which is 14 years away. But I wonder if this goal would be achieved in the current situation? Anyway, I’ll let you be the judge.

Technology is changing the world faster, although it is masculine and challenging, it is still worthy of attention. One thing that is indisputable is that ICT seems to be a snail’s pace in the changing world of women, as companies associated with femininity are retreating in ICT directions. As fewer girls and women are left behind in the ICT value chain and more men continue to enter the ICT world, the balance is clear. How many girls are taught how to develop computer applications, how many are computer literate, how many do phone and computer repair, what are we doing to attract girls to digital careers? It is superstitious to believe that ICT can promote promiscuity among women and this is just an empty excuse. Superstition is a big gap and still a comedy, yet it is a powerful influencing factor that has held African men captive for so long regardless of background. Undoubtedly, information technology communication on the Internet has changed life and continues to change life, it has changed how we do things, what we do, when and where things are done. It has made the world more modern than time. Close borders and open borders, made the world a small space for everyone. The only thing I believe the internet has yet to do is gender diversity. Gender mainstreaming in technology could be a sensible thing to do if we want a better and safer world for all.

Gender inequality remains an obstacle to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals, and especially Goal 5. It is unfair to realize that it is still difficult for men to understand the gender subtext of SDG Goal 5 I. e and then incorporate it into technology. Think what gender equality really means to men? As they used to ask, “Do women want to make themselves equal to men? Or what does the United Nations mean, gender equality? That’s a question that needs to be answered, and I know you can say. But you see, in the African context, it’s been extremely difficult to explain Men have found it extremely difficult to explain the meaning of the word “gender equality” to African men, and this is the main cause of resistance. If I may ask why it is difficult for women’s advocates to really stand, what kind of equality do they mean – when they stand for equality? Is this equality means aligning yourself with men? What are the characteristics of these qualities? What about the benefits now and in the future, and even for children and families? I think if any of this is answered, mindsets and perceptions can be shaped. You know, many men pretend that know what gender and equality is but don’t. They just go back to their circle and take it as an insult. Do you know there are so many misconceptions about gender equality presence in local communities? To a global worldview? Take a little survey and you will be shocked at your result.

Educated men, though few are worse than that, while uneducated men don’t even want to hear about it. Girls are seen as weak who do not need a voice. Religiously, sex is the tail and man is the head. African perceptions are more expansive and relegate women to the home. I am aware that women and girls are less technologically savvy than men. I asked why? Why are men always trained for new opportunities and prioritized to access the same and perfect times? Why are women left behind to learn about new opportunities later and given the last chance to access them? Then I realized why the world is not better. Imagine if the internet educates a woman, doesn’t it educate the world, as they say?

Preparing girls and women with tech skills can help, especially now that every job has a digital component. Be it selling fruit, restaurant business, etc., internet/tech knowledge can help. But the real problem in Africa is that most girls and women, especially those living in rural areas, do not have access to the Internet, those who can access the Internet do so at a very high cost; internet is slow and disconnects. Internet coverage is still more urbanized; many others do not know how to use the Internet with business sense or skill. And I’m excited. Worried, what to do?

A 2013 UNESCO report states that 65 million children worldwide do not have access to education. In Africa, 29 million girls are illiterate, while in Africa 17 million girls are out of school. It’s a bit irrational if some men feel threatened when women get an education? I think, for example, how traumatic it is if we postulate that educated women are not married and make them feel dissatisfied in society. I know though that marriage is not an end but a means to alienate society. However, all these stories sometimes make our women vulnerable and less interested in becoming who they are.

According to the World Economic Forum’s 2016 Gender Gap Report, gender equality in the workplace will not be achieved for another 118 years, which makes me agree with the report and look at ways to help turn the wheel. Since the majority of men still resist the empowerment of girls and women, I feel that women-led advocacy has not really helped but created gender animosity. And as I see it, men’s opposition to gender equality manifests itself in the intimidation, assaults, bombings, kidnappings and murders of gender activists. It is a humble opinion that women-led advocacy needs a rethink. Gender advocacy needs to involve men in their teamwork and initiate a dialogue with men at the local level at the international level. I will recommend that UN Women be led by men and let’s see if there will be new results.

From Kampala to Madagascar, girls and young women are doing everything they can to make an impact in the international space. For example, in Dakar, Awa Caba builds e-commerce sites; where local fruits are sold to residents while improving their well-being. In Nigeria, Linda Ikeji of http://www.lindaikejisblog.com uses her writing skills to write news stories on her blog and is a daily high earner among other things. Therefore, women who are the best entrepreneurs around the world need to be trained how to use the internet to expand their social network, business, make new friends and contacts. And when it does, the benefit will rob us all.
