Craft Project – How To Dress Up Plain Holiday Gift Bags

If you’re crafty and thrifty, I think you’ll appreciate this easy craft project to make and decorate your own holiday gift bags.

I went to a local discount dollar store and bought 5 gift bags for $1.00 and brought them home. After looking at them, I knew they would be a great craft project to do with my 11 and 13 year old nieces.

Ages: Since ironing is necessary, I recommend from the age of 11 under adult supervision.

Necessary materials:

Plain paper gift bags (with handles)

White, green, red, orange, black and brown fabric scraps

Printed design holiday fabric scraps (we used duck)

Heat ‘N Bond iron-on hot melt adhesive

2 swinging eyes

White craft glue

Iron and ironing board

Scissors

Markers (optional)

Snowman bag: You can get a pattern from a child’s coloring book or freehand your own snowman shape with a cylinder shape. Cut a snowman out of white cotton fabric, a triangle shape out of orange fabric (the nose) and a hat shape out of black cotton fabric. For the scarf, we cut a strip of red patterned fabric that is 1/4 inch wide and 8 inches long. Following the instructions on the Heat ‘N Bond package, iron the fusible webbing fabric to the wrong side. Then first lay down the white snowman and iron it into your gift bag. You will then pin his hat and scarf to his body in the appropriate places. Finish by centering the orange triangle on his face to represent his nose. Let the pieces cool for 5 minutes. Using craft glue, glue 2 small wiggly eyes above his nose. If you want, use a white marker and hand draw on some snowflakes or snowballs.

Easy Tree Bag: Cut a triangle of green patterned fabric that is about 4 inches high and 2 1/4 inches wide. From brown fabric, cut the trunk to be 1/4″ wide and 2 1/2″ long. Iron the fusible webbing to the wrong side of the fabric pieces according to package directions. Iron the tree trunk onto the gift bag first, then onto the tree on top. (just slightly covering the trunk). Let cool for 5 minutes. If you want, you can use markers to draw on the snowflakes or write a message.

Festive bird bag: We had scraps of holiday fabric with birds printed on them and cut them out. Each one is 4 inches wide and 2 3/4 inches tall. You can use any printed holiday fabric you want. Some great choices would be: Christmas trees, snowmen, holly, pine wreaths, birds, packages, etc. Whatever you have. You can cut out the shapes or create your own. Follow the directions on the Heat ‘N Bond package to join the webbing to the backs and then iron your shapes onto the gift bags.

The bags we make use a lot of my fabric scraps and are simple in design. However, you can really fancy them up with other materials like ribbons, laces, buttons and so on.
