Rabindranath Tagore – My Favourite Author

The first time I sang the national anthem composed by Rabindranath Tagore, the rhythm and melody touched my heart and strengthened my love for Bangladesh. I began to read his short stories and poems, which he created for children, brought me real joy. His ability to simplify and show the beauty of truth in the details to provide a broad example of what makes him my favorite author for my curiosity. Tagore was from a cultured and wealthy family. Rabindranath Tagore was born on May 7, 1861 and died on August 7, 1941. His father Devendranath was one of the leaders of the Brahma Samaj. The poet’s early life was spent in an atmosphere of religion and art, literature, music and paintings. The tendencies of his life as an author were early considered. He was brought up and taught in three languages - Sanskrit, Bengali and English.

Tagore’s literary life spanned sixty years, and he resembles Victor Hugo in the richness and variety of his works: more than a thousand poems; nearly two dozen plays and plays; eight novels; eight or more story volumes; more than two thousand songs for which he wrote both words and music; and much prose on literary, social, religious, political, and other subjects. In addition to his English translations of some of his literary works; his paintings; his travels and lecture tours in Asia, America and Europe; and his activity as an educational worker, as a social and religious reformer and as a politician – and there we, judging only by quantity, is the life work of Nuja. Suffice it to say that his genius was nothing more than the ability to endure infinite pain; but to note the element of steel and concrete that went into his creation, and thus get rid of the legend that has spread in some places in recent years about Tagore, the table poet of the pale lily ladies.

In 1901, he established his school Santiniketan in Bolpur as a protest against the existing evil system of education. The school was a great success and transformed Visvabharati. On his return visit to England in 1911, he brought with him the English Gitanjali, which was published in 1912 and the Nobel Prize for Literature the following year made him world famous. This was the first award to an Asian. The rest of Tagore’s life was spent in Santiniketan, apart from several travels and lecture tours in which he carried his message of human unity to all the important countries of Asia, America and Europe.

Tagore was a proud and ardent patriot. His most intense period of political activity was in the years after 1905, when the agitation against the partition of Bengal was at its height. He refused his knighthood in 1919 in protest against the Amritsar affair in a letter to the Viceroy, one of the great freedom documents. His patriotic poems and songs, especially the latter, have entered the common heritage of his country; the song “Bharata-bhagya-vidata” is now sung all over India and “Amar sonar Bangla” in Bangladesh as the national anthem. In this regard, I would like to discuss some of his books that have stirred my heart to enjoy an unlimited spiritual as well as real cultural life.

THE HOIMONTS

It is a remarkable short story in which Tagore has tried to portray the contrast between two families consisting of conservatism and modernism. Hoimonti was educated in a modern education system where her father had influenced her with the proper knowledge, culture, heritage and means to take revenge in real life situation. But being unsuccessful, she married the son of a conservative family, Op. This family believed in superstitions and social customs. Opu’s father and mother had prejudices that greatly influenced Hoimonti. Recently, Hoimonti had faded and her father-in-law was looking for another bride for his son.

BOLA

This story is about a boy who has no mother and was raised by his aunt. He developed a character different from his age group. He has an unusual love for plants and trees. Bola would not tolerate it if someone weeded some plants and trees. He thought that every plant has a unique life, unknown to all. He showed all his love and compassion even to a tree growing in an inappropriate place. Recently, his most beloved tree was cut down when his father went to Shimla for higher studies. Bolai’s aunt was shocked at the demolition of the tree, which she believed was the personification of Bolai.

SESHER CABIN

It is a famous novel created by Tagore. The actress in the story is Labonno and the actor is Amit. Their contrast and love relationship is featured prominently. The book has the greatest literary value in the world. True love and affair with high world literature is vividly reflected here, where the two yearning personalities most want to know each other. They did not have greed, jealousy, innuendo and bad temper, and they know how to deal with social conflicts and criticism from social critics.

KABULIWALA

The main characters of this story are a girl named Mini and Rahmat Kabulival. Kabuliwala is from Afghanistan; he sells things door to door. Once she was introduced to Mini, a talkative girl who was five years old. The man has left his daughter, who is of Mini’s age, at home. Mini and Kabuliwala developed a very good friendship. Kabuliwala used to bring Mini dry fruits as a gift and showed patience while listening to Mini. They used to tease each other about “going to the husband’s house”. For some reason, the man has to sit in prison for eight years. After coming out of prison, he wanted to meet Mini. But at that time Mini’s marriage ceremony took place. For the past eight years, she has forgotten her friend Kabuliwal. She was not as friendly as when she was a child and felt shy when she saw him. Kabuliwala could feel the distance that had passed between them and his daughter.

POSTMASTER

It is Rabindranath’s short story about the postmaster. The postmaster was transferred to the Indian village post office. Here he met a girl named Ratan with whom he always continued his conversation for hours after hours. One day the postmaster fell ill, Ratan took care of him and in this way a close relationship developed between them. When the postmaster was again transferred to the city, the girl became shocked and asked to be taken with him, but the postman could not take her. Rattan lived with the overwhelming pain of fond memories; she had spent time with the postmaster.

I like Rabindranath’s book because I came to know many things about the land, people and nature. We learn the problems of Bengali life, religion, culture and heritage. His books sometimes really create passion, intuition and excitement in the readers, reflecting the social conflicts and contrast between conservative and modern educated people. Moreover, the poetry rooted in his common life has been vividly contemplated in a significant way, which touches my heart deeply.
