Twilight Hysteria – Women’s Fascination With Adolescent Romance

Millions of women in their 30’s, 40’s and beyond are avidly following the romantic adventures of 18-year-old Bella in the teen romance series known as Twilight. What are the emotional longings that drive them, we may wonder?

Feminists are disgusted by the fact that Freud described many of his patients as suffering from hysteria. Although I consider myself a feminist, I’ll venture to say that I think hysteria aptly explains the adult female frenzy about Twilight. I was recently asked if the Twilight phenomenon has anything to do with the Cinderella complex. In this book, published in the 1980s, I documented women’s psychological fear of independence—their deep-seated desire to be rescued. Feminists of the time questioned my theory, and yet a quarter of a century later we have something like mass hysteria reflecting women’s fear that without the love of a strong man their lives will have no meaning. Given the enormous gains women have made both professionally and financially, how could the romantic illusion continue to be so powerful?

As a psychoanalyst, I have begun to think clinically about Twilight Twitter. I think one aspect of women’s identification with young Belle is her selflessness. As soon as Edward shows interest in Bella, she backs off. “I couldn’t think of anything about myself that would be interesting in any way,” she says.

“I know exactly how she feels,” experienced women tell me. And yet Bella’s complaint is that of a girl with little interest or curiosity about life, much less herself. Despite herself, she gets a boy (or in this case, a vampire). For women, doubts about Bella’s romantic success are reassuring. In addition, they are strangely compelled by the idea of her unsatisfied sexuality. (I can imagine Freud in his grave stroking his beard and saying, “I told you so.” To his way of thinking, repressed sexuality was at the root of female hysteria.)

As psychoanalysts understand the phenomenon today, the main problem for hysterics is the harmful experience that was never taken seriously. This causes such individuals to remain anchored, feeling “virtually weightless and floating, drawn here, repelled, first by this and then by the passion of others,” as noted psychoanalyst David Shapiro wrote. Few seem to be rooted in deep interest or purpose. The resulting sense of insignificance can leave those suffering from hysteria vulnerable to the influence of others. Shapiro described it back in the 1960s as a “Prince-Charming-will-come-and-everything-will-be-good outlook on life.”

Anyone who doubts that many women still think this way need only check the flood of OMG sensibilities on blogs and chat rooms. OMG, Edward is too handsome, too fabulously strong, even “gentlemanly”. Bella is so happy to have grabbed him; now, like Cinderella, the poor girl can look forward to a lifetime of happiness. Regardless of the dangers of knocking out Edward’s creepy long canines, he is a prince.

When I work in therapy with women who are preoccupied with teenage dreams of romance, my hope is to spark a curiosity about themselves—to make them begin to wonder if their own powerful thoughts and feelings lie beneath. surface brush fires that distract them. Eventually, if things go well, they begin to experience themselves as essential, interesting, and beautiful, and no longer aspire to the images of male power in the media.

If there’s a main reason women are upset about Twilight’s new Bella, I believe it’s this: society still doesn’t take women seriously. As a result, many women do not take themselves seriously.

The cultural conditioning of girls still exists. Consider the frenzy surrounding “princess parties” if you want proof that romantic notions are still being combated. It’s Barbie reincarnated, only the princess is something more fleeting, more unimportant, even less aware of her essence.

In the 1970s, we worried about Barbie’s influence on our daughters and tried to lessen her power over them. Modern mothers really love a princess. They spend millions so that their daughters can fly around in miniature dresses and tiaras, looking and acting like one.

My concern is that as long as society continues to insist on a watered-down image of femininity, girls will continue to struggle to connect to their core selves and grow up addicted to “harmless” stories of romantic obsession.

By focusing so much on romance, women only feed the fantasy that they need an idealized significant other to make the world go round. After all, they stay long, and the glass slipper of grown-up love eludes them entirely.
