Childhood obesity creates documents. The numbers are up. Is it any wonder?

Physical education is not funded in many public schools, and in many others it is ineffective. Fat is the last legal prejudice. Kids make fun of anyone who’s different, and fat is fair game. Heaven help the fat baby in shorts where the fat can hang out for all to see. Bullies will target and not stay.

Children spend hours on the computer and their surroundings are unsafe.

Here are some strategies for raising strong, healthy, mentally and emotionally stable children.

Emotionally

1. Acknowledge that it hurts when kids make fun of them because of their looks. Help them build emotional intelligence by acknowledging how they feel, and help them develop empathy for others who are different and ridiculed.

2. Admit that you know there are kids who eat worse than they do and don’t have to struggle with their weight. The message is that you appreciate that it may not be fair and that getting healthy isn’t easy and it’s not necessarily their fault, but they’re still responsible for doing what they can to manage it. Watching skinny minnie eat cookies and milkshakes and sandwiches and fries and never gain weight is discouraging when you eat lettuce, carrots, and lean chicken or tuna.

Food and diet

3. If the child eats a lot of unhealthy food, see if you can change these habits. Junk food is against kids because processed white sugar, processed white flour and food additives are DESIGNED to be addictive and increase appetite. Deprivation isn’t the point, but judicious choice of treats helps. Give them messages like their body is their temple, they should treat it well. Offer metaphors like if they put bacon in a sports car. No, they would put the best fuel they could afford in it. Bodies are like that.

4. Invite overweight children to shop with you and teach them to read labels. Get them to become experts so they have the tools to choose and/or splurge wisely, but understand the importance of splurging.

5. Encourage (rather than force or punish) overweight children to try different foods that might help them eat less junk. For example, fresh fruit. Burritos with protein fillings like beans, as opposed to completely empty calories. Nuts as opposed to chips. Baby carrots, even.

Exercise

6. For most overweight children, the best way to help them is to improve their metabolism. Exercise is the best way to do this. Fit children are less likely to be bullied. Fit, strong kids are rarely bullied. Fit, confident, strong children with exceptional physical abilities are never bullied. If the child has rhythm, involve him in dance, tai chi, aikido. If they have two left legs, have them try kickboxing or wrestling. If they like team stuff, soccer is great and there are teams for all abilities and all genders. If they are extra “round” and have lots of soft baby fat, try swimming, they will swim better than any of their skinnier friends. Weightlifting can be a win for boys.

7. The art of fighting is always victory. It builds discipline, muscle, aerobic capacity and confidence. Choose according to your child’s capabilities or try what is available to his friends or geographical area. Children who know martial arts know how to breathe, they know how to focus, they have strength both internally and externally. They are not intimidated.

8. Health is the best revenge. So take advantage of every opportunity to be active with your child. Go to the video store. Walk with them to talk about what is happening at school. Turn on the music and dance. Exercise facilities are available in the house such as bouncers, trampolines, swings for the youngest, jungle gyms, etc.

Special programs

9. If your child is very struggling, consider doing summer camps designed to do all of the above with lots of other kids struggling with the same thing. Not all camps are the same, so check them out. But an 8-year-old spending 4 weeks in the summer being healthy and active, losing only 10 pounds and growing 2 inches is a great way to go back to school in the fall. They are stronger, thinner, more confident, tanned and have met many new friends.

10. If your child is significantly overweight, consider working with a naturopath, homeopath, or holistic nutritionist. Why holistic? Oftentimes, kids who struggle to gain more than a few pounds have other things going on that, if not addressed, will make it an uphill battle. They may have nutrient deficiencies. Vitamin C deficiency is common in children who crave sugar, for example, potassium is often deficient in children who like salt. Children who have been on a lot of antibiotics may not have good gut flora and need acidophilus, bifidus. Children who seem to eat all the time and are always hungry may have something more serious going on. Sugar addictions, wheat allergies, prediabetes or even a parasite.

11. If you have an overweight child and other children who are not in the same room, it helps to have a family meeting where the whole family decides how they will help each other with EACH family member’s issue. Calling out a fat child’s problems is humiliating, but if a family helps one child with spelling and another with food, it all evens out and creates family (team) spirit. If a family decides to help a child who struggles with food by keeping the house Oreo-free, the support is powerful.

Give them an advantage

12. Go organic. Skip the Costco and Walmart specials. Children who are overweight are sensitive to things that other children are not. Organic food will have fewer additives, fewer hormones (designed to help cattle and chicken GAIN weight), less genetically modified food that would also be allergenic, fewer chemicals to trigger an immune response. Organic products also taste better, and it may take less effort to get your child to snack on melt-in-your-mouth cherry tomatoes than tomatoes that taste like cardboard.

13. Develop your child’s other strengths. If they are good at spelling, encourage them to compete in a spelling bee. If they are musically inclined, find places for them to sing, play. If they like computers or video games, help them get really good at those skills so they have confidence from other perspectives.

14. Be sensitive to their appearance. Appreciate that a request from an overweight child to “blend in” or “fit in” is more charged than a request from a child who looks more mainstream. Help them choose clothes that are flattering and fit really well. Make sure they have clothes they can move in and are not uncomfortable. (I knew one teen who hated walking until she got, like, shorts and pants that didn’t chafe. Then she walked everywhere because pants don’t chafe her thigh!) Make sure they find age-appropriate clothing. appropriate and have enough style that they don’t get bullied more because of their clothing. It will cost more than you’d like, as most larger sizes cost extra and alterations are always in the works. Also know a good place to alter things, so if you need to go up a size to fit a bigger belly, the rest of the garment isn’t as big, there’s room for Aunt Matilda too. This is where you can REALLY help your child adjust. Buying slightly better quality fabrics that don’t show fat curves, for example, or clothes that are really well made and hang perfectly will make your child look smaller than they are. Good underwear is also important, especially for girls. Find a way to make them feel special, like with accessories or shoes.

15. Back to basics, they’re not alone. Let them know they are beautiful inside. Appreciate all the unique and special things they are. Give beauty messages often. Compliment your best qualities, extra effort, exercise, and food wins. Take them to movies like Shrek, Harry Potter, and other movies that have characters who aren’t all skinny. Show them art that depicts ancient cultures when thinness wasn’t so ingrained (eg Botticelli, Rubens, African tribes). Give them unconditional love and acceptance regardless of their success or failure in any of these areas.
