Does Everyone’s Opinion Count? A Ranking of the Fashion Blogs
The world wide web has a constant flow of information on the internet superhighway, including the recent trend of fashion blogging. Currently, hundreds of new fashion blogs are created every day and more than millions of already established websites. With the sheer number of people posting their opinions on style, how can you stop wasting time reading useless fashion blogs? Is it necessary to separate the quality blogs from the irrelevant ones? This review of the five top-rated fashion blogs gives you some insight into what standards you should use to decide which blogs are worth your time.
Fashion blogs are ranked on a 10-point scale in four areas: (1) clarity of thought, (2) timeliness, (3) relevance, and (4) degree of opinion.
Style File Blog:
Total score: 28
Style.com is the ultimate source and destination for fashion news, trends and photos of the season’s runway shows. In addition, the famous site has a main blog site, Style File, where writers can post opinions on various aspects of fashion in a more informal setting and approach. Although Style File has multiple writers, the writing style of this blog site is distinct and individual to Style.com.
1.) Clarity of thought: 6.5. It’s polite. You can read it, although some posts can be a bit long. Also, some of the posts can be hard to understand if you don’t have much knowledge of fashion industry people like Sophie Hesketh and Birdie Bell.
2.) Timeliness: 8.5. This blog seems to lack consistency. It will have 5-6 posts in one day and then skip three days completely with no new posts and then continue with 5-6 posts. This is probably because people don’t work on weekends. On the other hand, it publishes a bit more than the average blog, but for a blog of considerable size and on a prominent website, you’d expect that to be the case.
3.) Relevance: 7. I don’t think this blog really provides any new important or really interesting information. It tries to use styles from outside the US, which can be informative, but it doesn’t focus enough on fashion in the homeland. The focus of the articles tends to shift away from American fashion and stick more to things foreign. In the last few days there have been more than five posts just about Moscow fashion. It is completely unnecessary. Information can also be quite dry at times.
4.) Opinion Grade: 6. Although it provides news, the writers do not write to form an opinion, but only blog to create a place for viewers to post their insights and opinions. Writers tend to say something they think is true, like “The Prep School Blazer style is very trendy,” but it still opens up the discussion to debate by asking the audience if they agree and what their thoughts are. This makes the writer’s views seem inconsistent and weak. The blog would be better if the writers were more opinionated in their criticism. It is unnecessary to ask the reader if he agrees with them or not, because the reader will post his own opinions anyway.
Hint Magazine Blog:
Hint Magazine is an online fashion magazine where you can read fashion columns and feature stories with a wide selection of topics including music, art, dance and of course fashion. It has a separate blog to informally discuss various areas of interest that suit more independent styles and are generally humorous and entertaining reads.
Total score: 30
1.) Clarity of thought: 8. The blog is clearly readable and understandable. It is written in a contemporary manner that appeals to a younger audience. Each post doesn’t have a lot of text compared to the Style File blog, and instead includes lots of photos and videos that accompany the posts. It keeps it from looking too intimidating to get across, which is important in today’s fast paced world of Twitter.
2.) Timeliness: 6. In an age where bloggers upload new posts a dozen times a day, this blog averages only 1-2 posts a day. In order to maintain a blog that keeps readers tuning in, it is imperative to have multiple posts over a short period of time that readers can return to regularly.
3.) Relevance: 7. If Style File’s theme content was all about the New York fashion world, this blog seems to veer a little to the left of that direction. The published information seems to be aimed at a wider audience, showcasing unheard of designers, writers and artists. I also found that it seems to post a lot of Brazilian artists and designers. I’m not sure if there’s a correlation between the writers and Brazil for them to do this, but either way it’s a bit against the balance of foreign affairs. Some of the posts are completely irrelevant and of no interest to me, but for those who enjoy reading about marble urinals at art fairs and gay porn awards, this is your destination. And if you’re one of those readers who likes this blog, good luck letting them know what you think because they’ve disabled the commenting feature on this blog.
4.) Opinion Rating: 9. The writers of this blog seem to enjoy writing about what they write about. Although the information about the news can be weak and tedious at times, this blog tries to send out its messages in a humorous and enjoyable way. While not all of the content on this blog is PG, I enjoyed reading it, even if I wasn’t too interested in what they were actually saying.
Fashion Tribes tends to appeal to the average fashionista who is well versed in various areas of fashion such as new trends, beauty and accessories. The reader is usually familiar with popular styles and essential fashion news happening in the fashion world. With elements from various aspects of fashion such as advertisements, magazines and events, this site is quite solid and well-rounded.
Total score: 30
1.) Clarity of Thought: 9. The blog is broken up into smaller paragraphs which makes it really reader friendly. Plus, if you’re done reading but still interested in the topic, it lets you read more after the jump, which frees up the clutter of extra writing and makes room for lighter photos and videos. . Lots of good pictures and examples that make the posts look lively and easy to read.
2.) Timeliness: 6. For a website that is well known around the country as one of the top rated fashion blogs, you would think that it would have a lot more blog posts, but instead I was disappointed to find that it only updates. 3-4 days a week. Although there are a large number of posts per day, the blog does not allow readers to view older posts because there is no backlog feature. This is really frustrating for those who want to continue reading the rest of the blog but can’t.
3.) Relevance: 9. I really enjoyed the content on this blog and I think it has lots of good useful information. It collects a variety of news on upcoming home pages in fashion, as well as information on fresh spring beauty regimes and free gifts that everyone loves. Given the wide range of topics on this blog, I think it’s very good for the everyday shopaholic.
4.) Rating: 6. None of the posted posts have any criticism or none at all. However, when you blog, you usually write about what you like, so with that in mind, you definitely know what the writers of this blog like to write about, which explains why I gave it a more generous rating because of the posts it has. . things assuming you know they are things they like or find enjoyable and you don’t really have an opinion about them.
Go, escape yourself:
Combine Hollywood celebrity style with Perez Hilton’s sense of humor and you have the love child of Go Fug Yourself. Known for its offbeat humor, it leaves no celebrity untouched or unnoticed. This blog is probably one of the funniest fashion critique blogs in the sea of fashion blogs on the internet, but again, I’m completely biased because the humor of these writers is where I belong. Warning, this blog is not for everyone.
Total score: 38
1.) Clarity of thought: 9. This blog takes the adverb “A picture speaks a thousand words” and makes it a central point. Uploading a photo of a celebrity in a ridiculous outfit speaks for itself, mainly because it shows the reader the ridiculousness of the celebrity’s outfit choices. Using the photo as a joke, the writers then unapologetically trash the outfit.
2.) Timeliness: 10. Finally! A blog with little consistency! It is well updated during the day. You can expect around 5 entries per day, on weekends, which is understandable.
3.) Relevance: 9. Depending on your sense of humor, this site may or may not be for you. For those who enjoy reading about celebrities being bashed based on their clothing choices, you’ve pretty much found gold, but the faint of heart may cringe even more when they realize how harsh some of the criticism can be. Don’t worry though, this site is a lot of fun! Fortunately, I fall into the first category on this site and I really enjoyed this blog.
4.) Opinion Grade: 10. Go Fug Yourself has made a career out of voicing their opinion on what others are wearing, so if I had a hard time giving it anything but full marks.
Fashionista is the product of two staff writers from Nylon and Elle Magazine, and they join forces to bring you fashion news faster than most other blogs. With a mix of gossip, rumours, sales tips, practice tips, freebies, editorial photography and other essential fashion world news, Fashionista is a comprehensive and delightful read. Maybe I’m just being totally subjective since this is one of the few blogs I actually read on a daily basis besides Perez Hilton, but Fashionista brings together all the New York style straight from the city’s oven.
Total score: 38.5
1.) Clarity of thought: 10. The blog is written in small paragraphs, making it easier for the reader to get through it without feeling overwhelmed. If a reader is still interested in a particular blog post, she can click on a separate link to read after the jump. It uses a combination of lively photos, videos and own photo shopping writing, making the blog more personal and different from Fashionista. As a helpful measure, if you don’t understand some fashion terminology, they have a dictionary specifically for that purpose!
2.) Timeliness: 10. Fashionista updates multiple times a day throughout the day to bring you the latest and most important news. This blog is the archetype of how other fashion blogs should work.
3.) Relevance: 10. The posts in this blog are related to what’s new in the New York fashion scene. While this may not apply to everyone, it applies to haute couture in a very real way that can be understood no matter where you are. It also includes items from other fashion sites to bring you the most relevant information, such as the Snacks of the Day section. This blog also covers various fields of fashion such as models, beauty and editorial spreads to give the viewer a good read on all aspects of fashion.
4.) Degree of opinion: 8.5. While some blog posts are made to provide unbiased information to readers, other posts are made to showcase models or photo shoots that the writers really like. Either way, you’ll be reading this blog learning what’s important to Fashionista creators. However, in most news, writers write posts critically, with a strong opinion.
