The Cigarette Smoking Tragedy

Smoking harms every part of the body – there is no organ it does not touch. It causes many diseases. It reduces the quality and enjoyment of life and shortens the life expectancy of the smoker.

Smoking has a devastating effect on the individual and their family and friends. And yet almost 6,000 children under the age of 18 start smoking every day; of these, nearly 2,000 will become regular smokers. That’s almost 800,000 a year. It is estimated that at least 4.5 million US teenagers are cigarette smokers, and about 90 percent of smokers start before age 21. Cigarette smoking in childhood and adolescence causes serious health problems. These problems include the production of cough and phlegm, an increase in the number and severity of respiratory diseases, reduced fitness, an unfavorable blood lipid profile, and a possible delay in the rate of lung growth and peak lung function. About 440,000 Americans die each year from diseases caused by smoking.

It has been estimated that 364,000 patients are admitted to hospital each year in England due to smoking-related illnesses. That’s 7,000 hospitalizations per week or 1,000 days. For every smoking-related death, approximately 20 smokers suffer from a smoking-related disease. 1997/1998 In 2010, cigarette smoking caused approximately 480,000 patients to consult their doctor for heart disease, 20,000 patients for stroke, and almost 600,000 patients for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

Half of all teenagers who currently smoke will die from diseases caused by cigarette smoke – if they continue to smoke. A quarter will die before the age of 70, losing an average of 21 years of life. It is estimated that between 1950 and 2000, six million Britons, 60 million people worldwide, died from diseases linked to tobacco use. One in two long-term smokers will die prematurely as a result of smoking – half of them in middle age. Most people die from one of the three main diseases associated with cigarette smoking: lung cancer, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (bronchitis and emphysema), and coronary heart disease.

In the UK, the number of deaths caused by smoking is five times higher than the 22,833 deaths resulting from: road accidents (3,439); poisoning and overdose (881); alcoholic liver disease (5121); other accidental deaths (8,579); murder and manslaughter (513); suicide (4066); and HIV infection (234). Worldwide, almost 5 million people die prematurely each year due to smoking.

Smokers are also at greater risk than non-smokers for many diseases that may not be fatal but can lead to years of debilitating illness or other problems. These conditions include:

Acute necrotizing ulcerative gingivitis (gum disease)

Angina (20 times the risk)

Back pain

Buerger’s disease (severe circulatory disease)

Cataracts (2x risk)

Cataract, posterior subcapsular (3x risk)

Colon polyps

Crohn’s disease (chronic inflammatory bowel disease)

Depression

Diabetes (type 2, non-insulin dependent)

Duodenal ulcer

Hearing loss

Impotence (2x risk)

Flu

Ligament injuries

Macular degeneration (eyes, 2x risk)

Muscle injuries

Sore throat

Nystagmus (abnormal eye movements)

Ocular histoplasmosis (fungal infection of the eye)

Optic neuropathy (vision loss, 16 times risk)

Osteoarthritis

Osteoporosis (both sexes)

Penis (erectile dysfunction)

Peripheral vascular disease

Pneumonia

Psoriasis (2x risk)

Rheumatoid arthritis (in heavy smokers)

Skin wrinkling (2x risk)

Gastric ulcer

Tendon injuries

Tobacco amblyopia (loss of vision)

Loss of teeth

Tuberculosis

This means that the smoker has circulatory, hearing, vision, joint, muscle, sexual, digestive, lung, skin and other problems – it is not a pleasant picture. This list does not include the various types of cancer that smokers are prone to, such as cancers of the mouth, esophagus, bladder, kidney, pancreas, stomach, and leukemia. Also not included in the list is the fact that circulation problems can lead to gangrene (tissue death) leading to amputations. There are also functions that are impaired by smokers. These include:

Ejaculation (reduced volume)

Fertility (30% lower for women)

Immune system (weakened)

Menopause (starts on average 1.74 years earlier)

Decreased sperm count

The sperm is less able to penetrate the egg

Sperm motility is impaired

Abnormalities in sperm shape increased

The life of a smoker is not easy. The suffering and disease caused by smoking is severe. The only way to ensure that you don’t have this pain and suffering is to not smoke. If you currently smoke, you need to quit. Quitting smoking isn’t easy – however, you don’t have to go through the process alone – you can get guidance, support and help.
