The Importance of Physical Fitness

I have worked for 25 years in the field of Information Technology sales. Every year the sales force gets together for their annual drink-fest, er, I mean sales meeting. Last year it dawned on me that when small groups of the guys get together – say, 10 of us – no fewer that 7 have protruding guts and typically appear to be out of shape. They just don’t understand the importance of fitness.

I am not talking about just the older guys, I mean the younger guys as well. I know of a bunch of twenty-something guys in my field who are becoming sloth-like. I am 49 years old and I could run circles around most of the younger guys that work with me. There is no excuse guys! You need to improve your level of Fitness!

I have noticed over the last few years that the number of out-of-shape guys within our rather large sales force (over 200 people) has been growing. I think that the percentage of out-of-shape guys is much greater than the percentage of out-of-shape women among the group. Now, this is not scientific, but it is a fairly accurate perception.

Now ladies, I won’t be as hard on you, since you have babies and, frankly, you are much tougher than me! I think that ladies as a group care more about how they look, and at least try to eat right and exercise.

There is no doubt, that as a population, we are getting fatter. We are also providing a less positive role model to our kids. This becomes evident since obesity among kids is growing as well. Let’s make a conscious decision to turn this trend around.

What are the steps to do this?

You have to make the decision that you want to be healthy and Physically Fit. You need to start by understanding what this means for you. I know you know – what were you thinking when you were on the net searching? Were you looking for Fitness? Exercise? Nutrition? Fat Loss?

Here are the basic components of physical fitness: Aerobic Endurance, Muscular Endurance and Strength, Flexibility, and Body Composition.

If you are unhappy with how your body looks, you probably understand that your Body Composition is made up of a higher percentage of fat. Body composition is really the result of the actions that you have taken throughout your life. Make the decision to put those bad choices and bad habits behind you. You are no longer that person! Say it: ” I am healthy and fit!”

Getting in that frame of mind is so important, and it needs to be followed up by action.

Set a Goal.

In order to get somewhere, you have to know where you are going. Therefore, goal setting is the next step. I prefer to call this plan setting. What needs to be done everyday to reach that goal.

Goal setting is much easier when you are inspired by others who have been where you are, and are now where you want to be. You can short cut the plan setting stage by role modeling the successful health and fitness strategies of men and women who have conquered aging and disease.

They say that you are the average of the five people that you hang out with most. So, are you hanging out with your friends on the couch watching football? Are most of your friends sedentary? Do you and your spouse or significant other just sit around after work? Do you share the same bad eating habits?

Take a look at those around you. Look, if you are overweight, hanging around those that keep you from improving yourself will not motivate you towards success. I am not saying that you should leave your spouse! I am saying that you should have a heart to heart talk, and convince your spouse to support your improvement, and have her join you!

Role modeling is the secret to motivation, accelerated learning, and rapid body transformation! Motivation is so key to your success. Not only that, it is key to taking that first step and setting an action plan!

Taking that first step propels you towards your goal. You will be motivated to take more action, and your actions will lead to steady results. You will be motivated to learn more about your new lifestyle and this will lead to a higher level of confidence. At this point you have learned that The difference between those who succeed and those who fail is those who succeed have formed the habit of doing the things unsuccessful people will NOT do. You have taken action and formed the habit of taking care of yourself; eating right and exercising.

You now have Momentum towards your goal.

Can you feel it? Can you picture yourself with the body you want? If you are having trouble visualizing yourself with the body you want, then reach out for some help. Learn from those men and women who have had a great deal of success in transforming their bodies.
